Point A to Point B: The Life and Times of an Accidental Uber Driver
It was the summer of 2016. The most expensive forest fire in US history raged in the remote tourist destination of Big Sur, California. The author, who is hyper-allergic to smoke, was forced to evacuate. Unable to wander far from home due to business interests, James Macfarlane fled from one Central California community to another, dodging fast breaking wildfires like raindrops. With a dwindling pocketbook and an aged car that died while in exodus, James had to come up with a plan. It took the form of a new car and an application to drive for the popular ride sharing service Uber. Over the next four months James gave over a thousand rides to fares ranging from the CEO of a billion dollar company, to a high-schooler who had missed the bus, to a baby-bag left in a restaurant by parents now a hundred miles away at the hotel (with a crying baby). Certified as an 'Uber Wine' driver, James also gave countless rides to fun seeking fares in California's fastest growing wine region. Out of the experience came a wealth of "Uber stories". This book is a collection of those stories. But it's more. The experience was part of a journey James was set on, with much humor and wisdom emerging during the odyssey. While driving, nearly every passenger wanted to hear an Uber story, and many in-turn provided one as the process called life unfolded adventure in after adventure and mishap after mishap, along with a number of heartwarming experiences. It is the eternal flow of stories, and people's interest in hearing of them, that sponsored "Uber James" to write this book.

Caroline Berry is lost at twenty-seven, living in New York -- not as the writer she once hoped to be but as an assistant at two part-time jobs. In an attempt to figure out a next step, she heads for Point Clear, Alabama, to spend several weeks relaxing at an old southern hotel on Mobile Bay -- unaware that it will soon lie in the direct path of Hurricane Ivan. Ignoring evacuation orders, Caroline hides out in the hotel and braves the storm alone. The next morning, she meets a mysterious man on the beach as he enters the churning water for a swim. He is Walker Galloway, a champion swimmer, which she discovers after learning of his disappearance in the newspaper. Realizing she is the last to have seen him, Caroline becomes entangled with his family and friends, and as she is gradually drawn in to Walker's world, she finds, at last, the story she was meant to tell. "Point Clear "is a compelling tale of one woman's quest for self -- who finds it only when searching for another.

Point de lendemain (No Tomorrow) is the English translation of a French 18th century masterpiece, Point de Lendemain by Dominique Vivant Denon. Written in 1777 and re-edited in 1812, Point de Lendemain is a record of the initiation of a young man and a member of a secret society. Giovanna Summerfield's preface and notes will offer a new way of reading Point de Lendemain, marginalizing the triviality of sex and the love triangle, which has been thus far seen as a physical need rather than as an expression of supremacy and challenge of God. Both the theme of love and the search for ethical answers are current and pertinent even in our days, thus they continue to make this work of art appealing and fresh.

Every year, over 1.3 million people apply to visit, work, or settle in Canada. It falls to visa officers to determine who gets in – and who stays out. In the face of this enormous responsibility, how do these gatekeepers use their discretionary authority to assess eligibility, credibility, and risk?Seeking answers to this question, Vic Satzewich conducted interviews with 128 visa officers, locally engaged staff, and immigration program managers at eleven overseas offices. He reveals how the organizational context within which they work shapes their decision making. When something in an application does not "add up" – somber photographs from a supposed wedding celebration, for example – an officer conducts follow-up interviews with the applicant. In a world where no two visa applications are the same, and in the context of complex and shifting population movements and pressures, this is a fascinating look at how visa officers do their work.
