Johann Sebastian Bach The Organist and His Works for the Organ (Edition1)
In the midst of England's Regency period, where the opulence of social class dynamics intertwines with the intimate struggles of family and inheritance, emerges a tale both timeless and immediate. This historical fiction novel, a gem of 19th century literature, invites readers into a world where personal growth journeys unfold against the backdrop of early 19th century England. For decades, this narrative lay dormant, out of print and hidden from the eyes of those who cherish british classic literature. Now, with a meticulous restoration by Alpha Editions, it stands not merely as a reprint but as a collector's item and a cultural treasure, ready to captivate today's and future generations. In this richly woven tapestry of English society novels, the characters navigate the complexities of their world with a depth reminiscent of the works of Richard Cumberland. Fans of Jane Austen will find familiar echoes in its exploration of societal norms, while readers of Charles Dickens will appreciate its keen observation of human nature. The story's historical significance is undeniable, offering insights into a bygone era that continues to resonate with contemporary themes of identity and belonging. As this narrative resurfaces, it reclaims its rightful place on the shelves of both casual readers and discerning collectors, offering a bridge between the past and the present through the enduring power of storytelling.

pokkari
Spurred on by admiration for his novelist half-brother and irritation at the biography written about him by Mr Goodman ('his slapdash and very misleading book'), the narrator, V, sets out to record Sebastian Knight's life as he understands it. But buried amid the extensive quoting, digressions, seeming explanations and digs, Sebastian's erratic and troubled persona remains as elusive as ever.Nabokov's first novel written in English, The Real Life of Sebastian Knight is a nuanced, enigmatic potrayal of the conflict between the real and the unreal, and the futile quest for human truth.
Belle and Sebastian: Illustrated Lyrics

Belle and Sebastian: Illustrated Lyrics

Stuart Murdoch

A beautiful collaboration between Belle and Sebastian frontman Stuart Murdoch and illustrator Pamela Tait: a unique visual reinterpretation of Murdoch’s favourite Belle and Sebastian songs. From the imagined lives of the passengers riding Glasgow buses in the early 1990s to questions raised about the status quo and musings on the meaning of religion, Stuart Murdoch, frontman of Scottish indie pop band Belle and Sebastian, has written some of the most captivating lyrics of the past two decades. Belle and Sebastian recorded their first critically acclaimed album Tigermilk in three days, played a sold-out show at the Hollywood Bowl with the LA Philharmonic, and famously forgot their drummer, dressed in his pyjamas, outside a Walmart. Their songs have animated many film soundtracks, developing a cult following that has helped to define the sound of indie music as we know it today. The first book in the 'Illustrated Lyrics' series combines the words selected from over twenty-four years of Belle and Sebastian songs with specially commissioned illustrations from Scottish artist Pamela Tait, whose intricate and whimsical character illustrations Stuart Murdoch stumbled upon and fell in love with when he rediscovered old fan mail Pamela had sent to him over a decade ago. Set with expressive typography, this is an exceptional publication that will seduce even the most devoted fans to ‘see’ these wonderful songs afresh.
The Real Life of Sebastian Knight
"Nabokov writes prose the only way it should be written, that is, ecstatically." -- John UpdikeThe Real Life of Sebastian Knight is a perversely magical literary detective story -- subtle, intricate, leading to a tantalizing climax -- about the mysterious life of a famous writer. Many people knew things about Sebastian Knight as a distinguished novelist, but probably fewer than a dozen knew of the two love affairs that so profoundly influenced his career, the second one in such a disastrous way. After Knight's death, his half brother sets out to penetrate the enigma of his life, starting with a few scanty clues in the novelist's private papers. His search proves to be a story as intriguing as any of his subject's own novels, as baffling, and, in the end, as uniquely rewarding.
The Cosmographia of Sebastian Münster

The Cosmographia of Sebastian Münster

Matthew McLean

Sebastian Münster's Cosmographia was an immensely influential book that attempted to describe the entire world across all of human history and analyse its constituent elements of geography, history, ethnography, zoology and botany. First published in 1544 it went through thirty-five editions and was published in five languages, making it one of the most important books of the Reformation period. Beginning with a biographical study of Sebastian Münster, his life and the range of his scholarly work, this book then moves on to discuss the genre of cosmography. The bulk of the book, however, deals with the Cosmographia itself, offering a close reading of the 1550 Latin edition (the last and definitive edition worked upon by Münster). By analysing the contents of the Cosmographia it attempts to recreate how the world of the sixteenth century appeared to a scholar living in Basel, and understand what he saw and heard. Through this examination of Münster, his publications and scholarly networks, the conflicts and continuities between medieval scholarly traditions and the widening horizons of the sixteenth century are explored and revealed. Of interest to scholars of humanist culture, the Reformation and book history, this ambitious work throws into relief previously overlooked aspects of the intellectual and religious culture of the time.
