While on a family holiday in Jerusalem, Simon, a carpenter from Cyrene, is singled out by Roman soldiers and forced to carry Christ's cross. A miraculous conversion ensues, and Simon's life is forever transformed. Returning home, Simon is shadowed by a member of the Jerusalem Sanhedrin, and is soon unwittingly thrust into the perilous world of the nascent Christian religion. Like Simon their father, Rufus and Alexander are carpenters. After helping Simon retrofit Captain Marius' Corbita cargo vessel with a new and revolutionary passenger cabin, they become enamoured with the sea and are soon travelling to Jerusalem and beyond. While the nineteen year old Rufus pursues the forbidden love of a beautiful young Roman woman, Alexander travels to the Holy Land to meet with the great apostles. In Judea, Alexander meets and falls in love with an alluring Christian maiden, only to be initiated into the trials and tribulations so common to the followers of Jesus at the time. Back in Cyrene, Simon works diligently at "fishing men", and plays an invaluable role in the emergence of the early church. Set in the historical world of the Roman Empire, Simon Of Cyrene is a warm tale of family bonds, romantic love, adventure, miracles, and unbridled faith. It follows a fictitious family of endearing characters as they meet and interact with historical biblical personages, and poses an intriguing question: Could one of the bible's most humble characters have helped to shape the structure of the Christian faith as we know it?

The Birch Bark Books of Simon Pokagon is a collection of articles and legends written for and about the Potawatomi tribe by Simon Pokagon. Originally printed on the bark of the white birch tree, a gesture made “out of loyalty to [Pokagon’s] own people, and gratitude to the Great Spirit, who […] provided for [their] use […] this most remarkable tree,” these works paint a picture of America’s native people. “[On] behalf of my people, the American Indians, I hereby declare to you, the pale-faced race that has usurped our lands and homes, that we have no spirit to celebrate with you the great Columbian Fair now being held in this Chicago city, the wonder of the world. No; sooner would we hold high joy-day over the graves of our departed fathers, than to celebrate our own funeral, the discovery of America.” Before Chicago was one of the largest and most prosperous cities in the nation, it was home to the Anishinaabe peoples, including the Potawatomi to whom Simon Pokagon belonged. Angered with the erasure of his people and the whitewashing of the history of violence against America’s indigenous tribes, Pokagon gave this opening speech, “The Red Man’s Rebuke,” at the World’s Columbia Exposition of 1893. A lifelong activist, Pokagon dissects the false narrative of savagery and civilization which justified the actions of European settlers while vilifying those they displaced in their movement westward. During the Exposition, Pokagon would speak to a crowd of 75,000 on his hope for the future of his people. Including lesser known works, such as, “Algonquin Legends of South Haven,” “Algonquin Legends of Paw Paw” and “The Pottawattomie Book of Genesis,” this beautifully designed edition of Simon Pokagon’s work is a classic of Native American literature reimagined for modern readers.

When we meet Simon of Beauvallet he is a 14 year old boy, the year is 1400, and the 100 year war is raging. Simon is the bastard son of Geoffrey of Malvallet and as such must make his own way in the world without the status and advantage his father's station might have conferred. By sheer strength of will Simon manages to join a rival house's army and through courage and strength rises up the ranks until he knighted by the King himself for his bravery. Through his travels and adventures he meets and becomes fast friends with his half brother, gains lands, but never finds love. Indeed his seeming disinterest in the many women of England who would be his lady gains him the moniker "Simon the Heartless." But that changes when he lays siege to and takes the French castle in Belremy. There he falls in love with the lady Margaret. But Margaret hates the English invader and Simon, it would seem, has met his match.
