Water, Land, and Law in the West

Water, Land, and Law in the West

Donald J. Pisani

University Press of Kansas
1996
nidottu
This volume features the best and most influential essays by Donald Pisani, one of our nation's leading environmental and western historians. Collectively, the essays highlight the central role played by land, water, and timber allocation in the American West and show how efforts to achieve justice and efficiency were compromised by the region's obsession with achieving rapid economic growth. Pisani's work underscores the importance of natural resources to the American vision of opportunity and social progress, as well as the limits of federal influence in resolving the complex tensions between national and local control, between government regulation and laissez-faire capitalism, between democratic and corporate power, and between development and conservation. His work reminds us that westerners, ever wary of any form of centralized planning, have been far more supportive of the marketplace than government direction, and he demonstrates just how difficult it is to alter natural resource policies to keep pace with changing times and values. For those already familiar with Pisani or those coming to him for the first time, this is an invaluable volume.

The Go Facts Environmental Issues strand looks at some of the most problematic issues facing the world today. The books have been carefully created to make information accessible to young readers. Large, exciting photographs draw readers into the text and get them thinking about the topic. The nonfiction text types - information report, explanation, recount, instructions, discussion and persuasion - are all represented. Other writing features such as compare and contrast, problem and solution, and cause and effect are included to show pupils how they can improve their non-fiction writing by incorporating these structures into their own work. Suitable for reading ages 9-11.
Walter Pater: an Imaginative Sense of Fact
First Published in 1981. Pater is certainly the least widely read and understood of any of the Victorian critics and creative writers, though there are signs of a coming revival of interest in him. Each of the discussions included in this issue devoted to Pater touches, in some significant way, on his "imaginative sense of fact," on his struggle with the objective ‘givens’ of experience (ideas or individuals), and on his efforts to co-opt or turn that Other into a reordered reflection of his own image.

Noah’s Flood is one of the Bible’s most popular stories, and flood myths survive in many cultures today. This book presents the first comprehensive examination of the incorporation of the Flood myth into the Anglo-Saxon imagination. Focusing on literary representations, it contributes to our understanding of how Christian Anglo-Saxons perceived their place in the cosmos. For them, history unfolded between the primeval Deluge and a future – perhaps imminent – flood of fire, which would destroy the world. This study reveals both an imaginative diversity and shared interpretations of the Flood myth. Anglo-Saxons saw the Flood as a climactic event in God’s ongoing war with his more rebellious creatures, but they also perceived the mystery of redemption through baptism. Anlezark studies a range of texts against their historical background, and discusses shifting emphases in the way the Flood was interpreted for diverse audiences. The book concludes with a discussion of Beowulf, relating the epic poem’s presentation of the Flood myth to that of other Anglo-Saxon texts.

The book provides instruction and guidance on the evaluation and decision-making processes involved in the conception and realisation of water and wastewater engineering projects. It describes how requirements are assessed for both water supply and sewerage systems, how solutions are specified to meet those demands and how systems are designed, installed, operated and maintained in conformance with operational and environmental standards. The author not only covers engineering design, but also explains methods for financial analysis of project proposals, environmental impact assessment and the management of water projects. By developing a hypothetical case study with numerous worked examples, the author leads the reader through the process of project development. The book concludes with valuable advice on how to write and present effective engineering reports.
