Democratizing Finance

Democratizing Finance

Decades before Occupy Wall Street challenged the American financial system, activists began organizing alternatives to provide capital to "unbankable" communities and the poor. With roots in the civil rights, anti-poverty, and other progressive movements, they brought little training in finance. They formed nonprofit loan funds, credit unions, and even a new bank-organizations that by 1992 became known as "community development financial institutions," or CDFIs. By melding their vision with that of President Clinton, CDFIs grew from church basements and kitchen tables to number more than 1,000 institutions with billions of dollars of capital. They have helped transform community development by providing credit and financial services across the United States, from inner cities to Native American reservations. Democratizing Finance traces the roots of community development finance over two centuries, a history that runs from Benjamin Franklin, through an ill-starred bank for African American veterans of the Civil War, the birth of the credit union movement, and the War on Poverty. Drawn from hundreds of interviews with CDFI leaders, presidential archives, and congressional testimony, Democratizing Finance provides an insider view of an extraordinary public policy success. Democratizing Finance is a unique resource for practitioners, policymakers, researchers, and social investors....

Wellness coaching isn't just about health. It's about all aspects of a person's life. A person who has good health but poor relationships with other people will feel out of balance. This book leads you through the coaching process that we use a Compass Wellness CoachingTM. The first two chapters lay the foundation for coaching the coaching process. The next five chapters discuss each of the core elements in the Compass Wellness CoachingTM model. The final chapters discuss how to help clients ensure that the changes that you have helped them make become permanent changes, and how to start your coaching practice. Coaching is an exciting and rewarding career. You will find that some of the time you are a consultant helping clients apply best life practices to their lives. Other times you will be a teacher, teaching clients new ways of thinking and responding to events and challenges. At other times you may be their guide. Years ago I climbed Huayna Potos in the Bolivian Andes. I hired a local guide and after a couple of training days he told me, "I'm just your guide. I can't climb the mountain for you. You will have to do that on your own. Some of the time, when the path is dangerous, I'll take the lead and I will expect you to step in my foot prints. Other times I'll point out the path and let you take the lead. I'll always be with you to point out the way, but I can't climb the mountain for you. You do that alone." That was some of the best coaching advice that I every received. I hope, in this book, I do the same for you

A valuable resource for addressing/promoting the spiritual awakening/development for patients based on a thoroughly researched system of meditationNearly 40% of americans saw an alternative healthcare practitioner last year. Interest in Yogaan aspect of ayurvedais growing nationally and is starting to become part of more progressive treatment programs. Patients want more. Providers need to offer more. And choices need to be based on sciencetific research on complementary/alternative medicine, which is under-researched in the addictions treatment field right now. Their has been a flurry of interest in Trancendental Meditation (TM) the past few months, mostly due to very impressive research on lowering blood pressureespecially in African Americans. This groundbreaking, scientifically based book shows how TM can have profound health-promoting effects on addictions as well, according to recent research on profound brain changes caused by TM practice.Self-Recovery acquaints readers with the use of Transcendental Meditation program and Maharishi Ayur-Veda. This natural comprehensive approach to health care, as brought to light from the ancient Vedic tradition of India by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, allows individuals to break negative habits that arise from an incomplete understanding of the relationship between mind, body, and environment. Self-Recovery shows how this ancient system of mind-body medicine, through its mental and physical procedures, can be used to treat addictive diseases effectively. The first book written on the application of the Transcendental Meditation (TM) program and Maharishi Ayur-Veda to addictions treatment, this volume is interdisciplinary in scope with original chapters by psychologists, physicians, physiologists, neurochemists, and other addictions professionals who offer an alternative paradigm to understanding and treating addictions. In contrast to conventional treatments, the TM program and Maharishi Ayur-Veda appear to provide a natural, comprehensive treatment approach that profoundly influences all levels of individual life that can impact on the addictive process. Not overly technical, Self-Recovery shares the pioneering experiences of clinicians using these holistic procedures as well as the striking findings of researchers who have integrated them into current chemical dependency treatments. For readers without prior introduction to this new approach, the TM program and Maharishi Ayur-Veda are briefly but thoroughly described. Readers looking for an effective mind-body treatment of addictions that is holistic in nature will find it in this book as it introduces them to this very ancient, but quite relevant, system of healing that can act in a complementary fashion with modern psychological and medical approaches to addictive disorders. Practitioners will find a description of Maharishi Ayur-Veda programs and learn about incorporating them into daily practice. Psychotherapists will learn how this unique program can affect the recovery process from addictive diseases. Through rich presentations of theory, research, and clinical case studies, Self-Recovery makes knowledge of Maharishi Ayur-Veda and the addictions come alive. The book is divided into four sections, the first of which contains an examination of the theoretical underpinnings and existing research on the TM program and its applications to addictions treatment. The second section features original research on the impact of TM on severe alcoholism and nicotine addiction. In section three, clinicians share case studies on the impact of the TM program on personal growth experienced during recovery from alcohol and other drug addictions. Section four presents theory and clinical application of the twenty approaches of Maharishi Ayur-Veda in chemical dependency treatment. David C. Xu's Mystery Creatures of China is one of the most exciting additions to the cryptozoological literature in years. For the first time, cryptozoology researchers and enthusiasts will be able to access information about some of the most intriguing mystery animals on the planet. The author has collected sighting reports and historical data from across all of China to bring the English-speaking world new accounts of fascinating encounters with strange and curious beasts. Many of these mystery animals have never before been presented in Western cryptozoological books or articles. From lake monsters to man-apes, mystery cats to dinosaur-like beasts, the four-winged bird to the blood-sucking blanket-like xizi, there are a multitude of mysterious creatures to enjoy and analyze. The author has created a doorway into the hidden zoology of China in expectation that others will take up the cause and seriously explore these biological mysteries. With over 100 mystery animals listed in 98 sections (categorized into aquatic, humanoid, carnivorous, herbivorous, reptilian, and winged cryptids), this book will amaze, intrigue, and delight anyone interested in cryptozoology and Chinese folklore. From Dr. Karl P.N. Shuker's foreword "Having been wholly immersed in cryptozoology from both an investigative and a chronicling standpoint for over 30 years, whenever I read any new such book nowadays I expect to be (and generally am) already familiar with the majority of mystery beasts presented within it - but not this time To my surprise but total delight, page after page in this extremely comprehensive volume unfurled extraordinary cryptids that I had never previously encountered - confirming my long-held suspicion as outlined earlier here that China's crypto-chronicles held all manner of treasures formerly hidden from me by virtue of my inability to read any Sinian language."For additional cryptozoology books, visit CoachwhipBooks.com.

Application of Adjoint Equations to Problems of Dispersion & Control of Pollutants

In recent decades, it has been recognized that environmental pollution causes serious local and global harmful effects, both to human health and ecosystems, and therefore the protection and restoration of the environment is a matter of great importance. Through the joint efforts of mathematicians, geophysicists and environmentalists, diverse methods for solving varied problems of environmental pollution have been developed. In this text, mathematical methods for analyzing the problems of transport and dispersion of relatively passive pollutants, control of air emissions and remediation of polluted aquatic systems are presented in such form that they are easily understood by undergraduate and graduate students. The application of the adjoint method is emphasized as a way to get dual estimates of average concentrations of different substances. This methodology helps to establish simple variational and linear programming formulations in order to calculate optimal solutions of these problems in the sense that they meet the standards of air quality and cause the minimal variations in the industrial processes or in the environment. This text is primarily intended for scientists, engineers and other professionals working in the field of environmental modeling (transport of air and water pollutants, assessment of pollution levels, optimal control of emission rates from point, line and area sources, the optimal location of a new industrial plant, bioremediation of oil-contaminated aquatic zones, etc.). We hope that this book will be useful for undergraduate and graduate students of engineering sciences and earth sciences as well.

We are all in pursuit of something. Faith Hounds: A Relentless Pursuit shows what we should pursue and, even more, how to get it. The number one issue people seem to have with the concept of faith is that they think it is ineffective. The common phrase is, ""Well I tried to believe, but it did not work."" By using biblically backed truths, this book goes into detail on what God says about pursing him and his promises, walking the reader through the process of when they first set their hearts to ask God for something until it finally shows in their life, while also addressing the possible hindrances that could be stopping them from seeing their answer. If you or someone you know is tired of seeing nothing come from praying or has completely abandoned the concept of God and faith, give this book a read. It will change your world and set a fire in your belly to be a relentless faith hound and pursue everything the Lord has for you.

Historically there were more male therapists and more female patients. Just as society has changed, so has therapy. Jung's psychology includes the feminine aspects of a man and the masculine parts of a woman. Of course, today it is a complete psyche or an inner marriage. In the background would be a mandala, which also represents wholeness and individuation. Synchronicity is an acausal but meaningful relationship, which therapy honors. Jung's psychology also includes the shadow, which represents what has been left out. The ego in analytical psychology stands for the center of consciousness in the personal self, whereas the Self is the center of the psyche and totality and links one to spiritual wholeness. Hence the individuated person has confession, conscious and unconscious, archetypes, complexes, anima and animus or syzygy, numinous, gnosis, typology, symbols, dreams, the shadow, and active imagination. These aspects of analytical psychology are then discussed and illustrated with a case history. In sum, the ego is secondary to the Self in an individuated person. Both a mandala and Jungian therapy and analysis are associated with wholeness.

Excavations at Chester. Roman Land Division and a Probable Villa in the Hinterland of Deva
Excavations at Chester. Roman land division and a probable villa in the hinterland of Deva reports on excavations carried out by Northern Archaeological Associates (NAA) at Saighton Camp – a former British Army training camp – located to the south of the Roman legionary fortress of Chester (Deva Victrix) which revealed important and extensive Roman period remains. Part of a high-status settlement of second- to fourth-century date, together with a regular field system laid out over more than 20 hectares, were encountered. The excavated settlement appears to be an ancillary area to a much larger site, the centre of which lies to the south and is believed to be a villa. This is the closest such site to Chester, and villas are notably rare in the region. The field system was probably laid out by the legion at Deva as part of the prata legionis, agricultural lands they controlled around the fortress.

sidottu
Hemoglobin is an iron-containing protein in red blood cells that transports oxygen to tissues throughout the body. The abundance, stability, and oxygen-carrying properties of hemoglobin can be altered by genetic mutations. More than 1000 hemoglobin disorders are known; hemoglobinopathies (e.g., sickle cell disease) and thalassemias are some of the most common human genetic diseases worldwide. Written and edited by experts in the field, this collection from Cold Srping Harbor Perspectives in Biology covers all aspects of hemoglobin and its diseases. Contributors examine the structure, expression, and evolution of the globin genes, the assembly of globin subunits into functional forms of hemoglobin, and the numerous variants that result from genetic alterations. The pathophysiological consequences of hemoglobin disorders (e.g., ineffective erythropoiesis and aberrant iron homeostasis), their clinical manifestations, and epidemiological trends are also described. This book includes discussions of management and treatment strategies for hemoglobin disorders, such as transfusions, iron- chelating agents, gene therapy, and stem cell transplantation. It is an indispensable reference for biochemists, geneticists, cell and developmental biologists, physiologists, and all who are interested in reducing the medical burden of these common genetic diseases.

This is the fourth volume of our series Progress in Anti-cancer Therapy. For the past four years we have taken the challenge to select each year, some of the most interesting topics on the wide field of oncology. As usual, this volume continues the tradition and covers five cancers (breast, prostate, bladder, lym phoma and ovarian), the role of HIV and HTLV in cancer, as well as some deve lopmental pharmacology and behavioral issues. This year, we have particularly focused our attention on one of the most com mon (although rarely addressed) cancer accounting for more than 315,00 newly diagnosed cases and 41,000 cancer-related deaths annually (Landis SH et al., 1999) : prostate cancer. Five chapters address some of the issues concerning this disease. The chap ter by Schroder describes the hopes and pitfalls of early detection of prostate cancer. It reviews the literature on screening studies that have been performed both in the US and in Europe. These studies suggest that cancer mortality could be reduced by screening for prostate cancer, mostly through PSA testing. However, the effectiveness of early detection still needs to be definitely confir med and ongoing randomized studies are described, the results of which will probably help the medical community determine the worth of PSA-based scree ning for prostate cancer. On the same hand, the paper from von Eschenbach is reviewing the clinical problems that are related this disease.

Lorsqu'on observe le Maniema, on a l'impression d' tre en face d'un terrain meuble o chaque mouvement reste soumis des variations soudaines et impr visibles.
