The New York Times bestselling author of Radical challenges Christians to break free from an American gospel that prostitutes Jesus for comfort, power, prosperity, and politics--and fully pursue the true gospel that exalts Jesus above all.Pastor David Platt believes we've gotten really good at following a really bad gospel--one that worships American ideas over biblical truth. It's time for disillusioned, discouraged, and divided Christians, and the next generation, to follow Jesus into a different future. But we have to make a choice: an American gospel or the biblical gospel. Worldly division or otherworldly unity. Compromise with the idols of our country or commitment to God's call in our lives. In Don't Hold Back, Platt encourages followers of Jesus to take necessary risks and find unimaginable reward as we: - Work for--not against--each other, especially when we disagree - Turn the tide on centuries of racial division in the church- Trust all of God's Word with conviction while loving everyone around us with compassion- Do justice with kindness, and experience the good life according to God- Play our part in spreading the gospel to all the nations of the world We can experience the full wonder of Jesus and transcendent beauty of his church here and now. But in order to do so, some things need to be different. Starting not in "those people," but in each one of us. With the gospel in our hearts and God as our prize, let's press on and don't hold back.
Don't Mention the War

Don't Mention the War

David Miller

The media has told us for over twenty five years that the conflict in Northern Ireland is irrational and has ‘no objective social basis’. The role of the British Army in Northern Ireland is still described as a peacekeeping one: the cause of the ‘troubles’ as ‘terrorism’. Yet, even in the light of the peace initiatives, many people in Britain and abroad know little about the war that has not been called a war. Why is this so? Don't Mention the War explains some of the fundamental reasons why there is such a dearth of knowledge and concern about Northern Ireland and how the problem has been defined both publicly and politically. Miller argues that the central strategy of the British state since 1969 has been to contain the troubles and bring about a return to ‘normal’. In pursuing this argument, Miller examines the strategies and tactics used by the British government, the nationalists, the unionists and others to influence perceptions and ideas about the conflict through press statements and other information management activities. This is a unique and timely work, based on over 100 interviews with journalists, government officials, political activists and politicians, which lays bare the lies of the propagandists and paints a disturbing picture of the success of the media managers in manipulating our perception of the conflict in Northern Ireland.

The T-33 jet trainer was derived from the Lockheed F-80C Shooting Star, the USAF's first operational jet fighter, in 1948. In the fifty years since its introduction the T-33 has trained more jet pilots than any other training type. In addition to this role, it has served, and continues to serve, as an attack fighter – the AT-33 – and as a reconnaissance aircraft – the RT-33 – in several foreign air forces. It was also a testbed in many development programs including tests on ejection seats and missile guidance systems, and continues yet today in various military and civilian roles.

The long love-hate relationship between the United States and France is a curious one that derives from misconceptions, dissimilar economic imperatives, and genuinely different cultural patterns. Didn't You Used to Be Depardieu? identifies and analyzes these differences through the contrast of American film remakes and the French originals.

Raised in a Mexican home in an Anglo neighborhood, David Sánchez was fair-skinned and fluent in Spanish and English when he entered kindergarten. None of this should have had any influence on the career path he chose, but at certain moments it did. With the birth of the Chicano Movement and affirmative action, a different and sometimes disturbing significance became attached to his name. Sánchez's story chronicles his life and those moments. No matter how we transcend our origins, they remain part of our lives. This autobiography of an outstanding mathematician, dedicated to others, whose career included stints as a senior university and federal administrator, is also the story of a young man of mixed Mexican and American parentage."A straightforward, unpretentious memoir which speaks volumes about being at once American, Mexican-American, and a noted academic, and about that most American of pursuits, the quest for meritocracy."--David E. Stuart, University of New Mexico, author of The Guaymas Chronicles

Don't forget about me

A most gifted musician of his generation, this book traces Gideon Klein's short life through his music, his diaries and documents as well as the reminiscences of his friends and family. Don't Forget about Me' chronicles the extraordinary and moving story about the young Czech pianist and composer Gideon Klein. Standing on the threshold of what was to be an auspicious career, Klein's musical activities in Prague were ruptured, as he, his family and friends were deported, interned in the Terezín (Theresienstadt) prison camp and ghetto. There his life took an even more unexpected turn, as he galvanised prisoners into an astonishing array of musical activities, and he composed his finest and most compelling music. Until recently, Klein's music has largely been performed within the context of Holocaust memorialisation. But events commemorating the Klein centenary in 2019 offered audiences and musicians the opportunity to re-assess and reposition Klein's place in the history of twentieth-century music and European modernism. David Fligg's monograph on Klein, the first in a quarter of a century, continues this process. Drawing on hitherto unpublished archival sources, interviews with Holocaust survivors who were imprisoned with him, many rare photographs and detailed musical analysis, 'Don't forget about me' recounts Klein's life from his Moravian childhood (he was born in Prerov in 1919), charting the development of his musical talent. It presents the first detailed examination of how the teenage Klein engaged with the numerous artistes who were at the centre of the vibrant cultural environment of pre-war Prague. Klein was finally transported to an isolated and bleak Auschwitz sub-camp, in the freezing closing weeks of 1944, where he was killed in a massacre by the retreating prison guards. His story, along with the compositions which remarkably survived Terezín, is one of the most fascinating of Czech Jews during the Holocaust, and documents how one young man continued to make music in the face of evil.
