Arcadia is the entrance to the awe-inspiring and terrifying realm of Dionysus, the Greek god of ecstasy, the Eleusinian Mysteries and Death. Julia, a solitary writer, disenchanted with life, discovers a pagan world on a side-street theatre of London's West End, a world packed with riddles and oracles ruled by the irresistible sensuality of a living god. A murder and a cryptic telephone call lead her to Daniel, the incarnation of the god Dionysus. Allured by his fascinating and indomitable personality Julia is placed on a stage of mythological magnitude enthused by desire, the power of tragedy and the invigorating impulse of the heroic. To stay in Arcadia Julia will have to face an enticing and ominous truth: Only those who are willing to break free and trespass the forbidden territory of the gods can defeat death."When a god breaks into our lives and fills us with a desire to penetrate and be penetrated by the Ineffable, life becomes an adventure. In the face of death's inexorable triumph, the gods offer us a pact of mutual fascination. Only heroes can feel the power of their lucid gaze.""In Arcadia Samantha Devin succeeds in resurrecting myths we thought forgotten. It is a powerful, invigorating novel driven by the energy of philosophical thought." JAVIER SIERRA.Samantha Devin is the author of Black Bile and Heroica. Her novels have been translated into English and German.

"Word by word, like in a spell, the enigmatic mystery transcends the pages and bewitches the reader. An intense, mesmerising, well-crafted plot."On a thunderous night, Max arrives in Shimst, a remote village in the north of Scotland. Four bizarre words welcome him at the entrance of the seemingly deserted town: "Do What Thou Wilt". The next morning Max learns that the village is cut off from the outside world because of the storm. Confined within the mountains Max is troubled by visions of a past he doesn't recognize as his own. Something or someone is plotting against him, twisting his sense of reality. What terrifies him most is that the inner space is becoming as menacing as the outer space. He feels that his mind, and even his soul, are no longer a known territory, that shelter is out of reach... With its unnerving atmosphere and brilliant psychological probing, Black Bile captures the imagination of readers who soon begin to fear that there is no way back once they have plunged into the depths of their unconscious."Samantha Devin weaves each paragraph with the icy calm of a Patricia Highsmith, as she builds a Gothic structure of inner horror. Black Bile brings elements to the labyrinths of our psyche that recall the obsessions of Ernesto S bato and Edgar Allan Poe." DIARIO DE OAXACA"A disturbing stroll through the abysses of madness. Black Bile is a disconcerting novel shrouded in a dark, angst-ridden atmosphere. The thread of the plot unravels into a page-turner that grips the reader from the first paragraph. Samantha Devin subtly handles the genre, sustaining the reader's interest with twists and turns that become totally addictive." EUROPA PRESS"Getting to know reality becomes our worst nightmare." EL PAIS"Samantha Devin publishes her first novel in which she closes in on the vertiginous boundaries of mental illness and interrogates the very concept of reality." EL MUNDOSamantha Devin is the author of Arcadia, A Modern Tragedy and Heroica. Her novels have been translated into English and German.

From pre-colonial times through World War II, Portsmouth, Rhode Island, has served as a stage for the dramatic evolution of American history. Dispossessed citizens from the Massachusetts Bay Colony came to Portsmouth in the spirit of religious and political tolerance, paving the way for the establishment of a large Quaker settlement in town. Revolutionary leaders such as George Washington, Lafayette, and Rochambeau visited the summer residences of wealthy Newport merchants in Portsmouth, including the home of Tory, Metcalf Bowler. During the Civil War, the Melville area of Portsmouth was the site of a hospital for wounded Union soldiers and Confederate prisoners, and was an active stop on the Underground Railroad. Prior to World War II, John F. Kennedy received his PT boat training in Portsmouth, and Raytheon has kept many employed in the defense industry ever since. Authors Nancy Jensen Devin and Richard V. Simpson are area historians who have combined the photograph collections of the Portsmouth Historical Society with many previously unpublished images from local families' albums to produce this remarkable new photographic history of the town. Mr. Simpson is the author of Bristol in the Images of America series, and Ms. Devin is the creator of a popular multimedia presentation called The Story of the Town of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. The authors' affection for the area and knowledge of its history are evident in this exciting tribute to the town and the people of Portsmouth.

From prompting a transition from hunter-gatherer to an agrarian lifestyle in ancient Mesopotamia to bankrolling Britain's imperialist conquests, strategic taxation and the regulation of beer has played a pivotal role throughout history. Beeronomics: How Beer Explains the World tells these stories, and many others, whilst also exploring the key innovations that propelled the industrialization and consolidation of the beer market. At the same time when mega-mergers in the brewing industry are creating huge transnationals selling their beer across the globe, the craft beer movement in America and Europe has brought the rich history of ancient brewing techniques to the forefront in recent years. But less talked about is the economic influence of this beverage on the world and the myriad ways it has shaped the course of history. Beeronomics covers world history through the lens of beer, exploring the common role that beer taxation has played throughout and providing context for recognizable brands and consumer trends and tastes. Beeronomics examines key developments that have moved the brewing industry forward. Its most ubiquitous ingredient, hops, was used by the Hanseatic League to establish the export dominance of Hamburg and Bremen in the sixteenth century. During the late nineteenth century, bottom-fermentation led to the spread of industrial lager beer. Industrial innovations in bottling, refrigeration, and TV advertising paved the way for the consolidation and market dominance of major macrobreweries like Anheuser Busch in America and Artois Brewery in Belgium during the twentieth century. We're now in the era of global integration-- one multinational AB InBev, claims 46% of all beer profits-- but there's a counterrevolution afoot of small, independent craft breweries in both America, Belgium and around the world. Beeronomics surveys these trends, giving context to why you see which brands and styles on shelves at your local supermarket or on tap at the nearby pub.

With the nuclearization of the Indian subcontinent, Indo-Pakistani crisis behavior has acquired a deadly significance. The past two decades have witnessed no fewer than six crises against the backdrop of a vigorous nuclear arms race. Except for the Kargil war of 1998-9, all these events were resolved peacefully.Nuclear war was avoided despite bitter mistrust, everyday tensions, an intractable political conflict over Kashmir, three wars, and the steady refinement of each side's nuclear capabilities. Sumit Ganguly and Devin T. Hagerty carefully analyze each crisis, reviewing the Indian and Pakistani domestic political systems and key decisions during the relevant period. This lucid and comprehensive study of the two nations' crisis behavior in the nuclear age is the first work on Indo-Pakistani relations to take systematic account of the role played by the United States in South Asia's security dynamics over the past two decades in the context of unipolarization, and formulates a blueprint for American policy toward a more positive and productive India-Pakistan relationship.
