Preaching's Top Books on Preaching Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. — Proverbs 4:25-26 Preaching is difficult enough under the best of circumstances. But what are we to do when it seems that all of us—hearers and preachers alike—are constantly distracted? Veteran preacher and homiletics professor J. Ellsworth Kalas offers wise insights for effective preaching in an age of distraction. He examines how people have been distracted in every era and explores how God can meet people precisely at the point of their distraction. Regardless of whatever new technologies come our way, this call to pastoral attentiveness, creativity and excellence provides avenues for connecting with congregations with a countercultural clarity of focus. Rediscover how the proclamation of the Word still speaks profoundly to distracted hearers. Invite your congregation to a renewed attention to the things of God.
In her memoir, and 1870s revision of her journal and diary, Louisa Barnes Pratt tells of childhood in Massachusetts and Canada during the War of 1812, and independent career as a teacher and seamstress in New England, and her marriage to the Boston seaman Addison Pratt. Converting to the LDS Church, the Pratts moved to Nauvoo, Illinois, from where Brigham Young sent Addison on the first of the long missions to the Society Islands that would leave Louisa on her own. As a sole available parent, she hauled her children west to Winter Quarters, to Utah in 1848, to California, and, in Addison's wake, to Tahiti in 1850. The Pratts joined the Mormon colony at San Bernardino, California. When in 1858 a federal army's march on Utah led to the colonists' recall, Addision alienated from the Mormon Church after long absences chose not to go. Mostly separated thereafter (Addison died in 1872), Louisa settled in Beaver, Utah, where she campaigned for women's rights, contributed to the Woman's Exponent, and depended on her own means, as she had much of her life, until her death in 1880.

Now parents can take advantage of the training and experience of preschool teachers. The book is filled with anecdotes and examples, tips and tools from the authors' years of experiences working with hundreds of young children. This lively real-life approach makes the authors' advice and ideas relatable and interesting. Unlike many parenting books, this book takes a positive approach, rather than a "fix the problem" approach. The authors see young children as inherently competent-as people who are driven to learn and grow more competent in all areas of development: social, emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and creative. They guide caregivers in using the young child's own strengths and level of development to help their child grow and develop into the capable, confident young person they are striving to become. Read this book for new insights into your preschool child, new (and surprising) ideas on how to enhance your child's everyday experiences, and new ways of thinking about your child. And enjoy many real-life examples and quotes of what preschoolers do, think, and say. Some of the quotes from the children will make readers burst out laughing, like this one from a four-year-old boy: "A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do." dramatic pause] "Clean the dishes and cook." Preschoolers are truly amazing people Come along and enjoy them with us

Pithy and snarky poems about people. Some favorites and some not so much so.
A celebration of the mundane tasks of life. A humorous accounting of the tasks that fill our days. Proof that good writing can be about anything.
