Fernando Henrique Cardoso

nidottu
For decades F. H. Cardoso has been among the most influential of Latin American scholars, his writings on globalization, dependency, and politics having reached a world-wide audience. This book, the third by Cardoso to appear in English, is the first to incorporate essays written during his tenure as president of Brazil. The transformation of Cardoso's economic and political approach is nowhere better documented than in this broad-ranging collection of writings that span Cardoso's early theoretical work through his pragmatic agenda for Brazil in a rapidly changing world economy. The book also traces the development of one of the world's leading intellectuals, who took theory into the arena of policy when he became head of state.
The Questions of Life

The Questions of Life

Fernando Savater

Polity Press
2002
sidottu
This book, by one of Spain's most eminent philosophers, provides a lively and very accessible introduction to philosophy. Written for those who have no prior knowledge of the field, it reveals how the central problems of philosophy remain highly relevant to everyday contemporary life. Savater addresses the questions that we ourselves must face: what is this ‘I' that I take for granted? What does it mean for me to be in the world? In what sense am I free? And how does the idea of death affect my life? In his discussion of concepts such as beauty, time and language, Savater frequently refers to earlier philosophers, yet he does so in a way that brings their ideas to life and shows their enduring relevance. Using quotations from the ancient Greeks through to more recent philosophers such as Wittgenstein and Sartre, Savater illustrates his own arguments, while also sketching a basic history of philosophical ideas. The Questions of Life has already been translated into ten languages and has enjoyed enormous success, selling over 70 000 copies in Spain alone. It is an elegant and straightforward book that abstains from specialised terminology. It constitutes an ideal introductory text for those studying philosophy at A-Level or university, and will also be of great interest to the general reader.

In Back to Revelation-Inspiration, Fernando L. Canale, analyzes the two main ways in which Christianity has understood the origin of biblical knowledge. Canale proposes a way to overcome them by suggesting a new model of understanding that maximizes their strengths and avoids their weaknesses. By allowing us to see and use biblical knowledge in a new light, the new model uncovers a new foundation for theological knowledge.

Saints in Art and History

A book of saints at once beautiful and profound. Saints in Art and History presents the lives of some 150 saints in chronological order, from the family of Jesus and the early Christian martyrs, to the founders of the great religious orders, to modern holy figures like Mother Teresa. This arrangement reveals the tremendous impact that the saints have had on the history of the Catholic faith, and on world history. The lives of the saints are illustrated not only with works of great art - by Memling, Raphael, and Bernini, among many others - but also by popular images, such as folk carvings and votive postcards. A thoughtful introduction explores the nature of sainthood, the role of saints in Catholicism, and the significance of their images. Other special features include a visual dictionary of the saints' attributes, and a map showing the patron saints of the nations of the world. This attractive volume is at once a valuable resource for art historians and other scholars, and a splendid gift for Easter or any occasion.

The interest for :I:~ modulation-based NO converters has significantly increased in the last years. The reason for that is twofold. On the one hand, unlike other converters that need accurate building blocks to obtain high res olution, :I:~ converters show low sensitivity to the imperfections of their building blocks. This is achieved through extensive use of digital signal pro cessing - a desirable feature regarding the implementation of NO interfaces in mainstream CMOS technologies which are better suited for implementing fast, dense, digital circuits than accurate analog circuits. On the other hand, the number of applications with industrial interest has also grown. In fact, starting from the earliest in the audio band, today we can find :I:~ converters in a large variety of NO interfaces, ranging from instrumentation to commu nications. These advances have been supported by a number of research works that have lead to a considerably large amount of published papers and books cov ering different sub-topics: from purely theoretical aspects to architecture and circuit optimization. However, so much material is often difficultly digested by those unexperienced designers who have been committed to developing a :I:~ converter, mainly because there is a lack of methodology. In our view, a clear methodology is necessary in :I:~ modulator design because all related tasks are rather hard.

Are some readings of the Bible more objective than others? More privileged? More true? How does one's own life situation shape one's reading of the text? What will acknowledgment of the validity of a variety of perspectives mean for historical-critical methods of interpretation? The present dizzying pluralism of locations - not only of ethnicity, class, and gender, but also of social and religious standpoints - presents a daunting challenge to older, mainstream interpretive schemes. In this landmark project, Segovia, Tolbert, and their fifteen other contributors have begun to measure the impact of social location on the theory and practice of biblical interpretation. This volume, and the international one to follow, signals the critical legitimation of reading strategies that supplement or modify or even in some ways dethrone the historical-critical paradigm that has dominated academic biblical studies for 200 years. It will provide immediate and enduring guidance to scholars and students sorting through the complex epistemological, social, historical, and religious questions that issue from this paradigm shift.

Teaching the Bible Coming to terms with the interpretive revolution- "Although the field of biblical studies is bursting with new methods and fresh interpretations, there has been surprisingly little discussion of what these changes mean for the actual task of teaching the Bible. Happily, this volume takes significant first steps in addressing the shifts in classroom pedagogy that the new day in biblical studies urgently demands." Norman K. Gottwald Author of The Hebrew Bible: A Brief Socio-Literary Introduction "An absolutely indispensable compendium of resources for charting the changes in the discipline of biblical studies, for exposing the operations of power in past and present interpretations and uses of the Bible, and for discovering a variety of postmodernist and postcolonial pedagogies in the reading and teaching of the Bible in a radically pluralistic age." Abraham Smith Perkins School of Theology, S.M.U. "A superb collection of essays on a topic centrally important to theological education and biblical studies. It is an invaluable contribution to the new emancipatory paradigm emerging in biblical studies. Highly accessible, a must reading for anyone in the field." Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza, Krister Stendahl Professor of Divinity Harvard University Divinity School "Teaching the Bible engages the problem and opportunity of theological education in the twenty-first century head on. In a tightly crafted series of provocative essays, the work clearly defines the postmodern, postcolonial, culturally enriched challenges facing the academy today. For any student or scholar who wants to engage the postmodern challenge as an innovative opportunity rather than a debilitating crisis, Teaching the Bible is required reading." Brian K. Psychometric Foundations and Behavioral Assessment

Psychometric Foundations and Behavioral Assessment

Fernando Silva

SAGE Publications Inc
1993
nidottu
Can traditional assessment (the psychometric approach) and behavioral assessment be effectively integrated in research as well as in practice? Can this integration improve the quality of the information collected from various instruments, strengthen the validity of interpretations, and improve reliability? Through a detailed, systematic, and critical review of both literatures, Silva shows how an integration of psychometric principles with the standards in behavioral assessment can result in an affirmative answer to these issues. Beginning with a review of the origins of behavioral assessment through the current practices, Silva explores such issues as the arguments for and against the integration of psychometric standards, the possibility of a normative interpretation of behavioral assessment data including an individual differences focus that is not at odds with an N=1 approach, and how the recent advancements in the psychometric approach to reliability and validity can enhance quality and utilization in behavioral assessment. "Fernando Silva's book adds a large and important contribution to the work of those of us interested in unifying behavioral assessment and psychological measurement." --Arthur W. Staats, University of Hawaii at Manoa "This is an important book. It fills, with great distinction, a need that has long existed in the assessment literature. (Silva) provides a detailed, balanced, and comprehensive review of the philosophical rationale of assessment from the behavioral perspective. And along with this he offers an extremely lucid and up-to-date account of the more expert thinking on psychometric methodologies. In particular, Silva's discussion of construct validity, especially in its relation to scientific method, is exemplary. "It is important to note, too, that Silva does more than merely review the current scene; on the contrary, he presents strong, clear, and well-reasoned conclusions, all of which seem to me highly compelling. "It would be a serious mistake for prospective readers to consider this book meaningful only for workers in behavioral assessment. In fact, the book is relevant to the entire field of assessment, not only because behavioral assessment, is, after all, a part of that broader scope, but also because the book contains an excellent, very readable summary of newer advances in psychometrics. In brief, this volume is a major contribution to the assessment literature." --from the Foreword by Paul McReynolds "The status of behavioral assessment within the larger framework of the psychometric tradition in psychology is surrounded by issues of substantial practical and conceptual importance that merit the thoughtful and detailed analysis provided by Professor Silva. This book should be required reading for all students in graduate assessment courses and will be of considerable interest to both behavioral and 'traditional' scholars and practitioners." --Jerry S. Wiggins, The University of British Columbia "Professor Silva's book is of exceptional quality. The discussion of basic concepts, such as validity, is a model by the information provided and by the clarity and lucidity of the discussion. The author has been able to achieve a balanced synthesis of the most recent technical developments and of the philosophical backgrounds of the concepts used, a rare combination in writings of this type. On the whole, the lecture of the book is to be recommended not only as a reference manual, but also as a source of reflection for the experienced psychologist engaged in behavioral assessment." --Pierre Pichot, L'Académie Nationale de Médicine "It is a well-written little book which anyone having worked with behaviour therapy and its diagnostic procedures will benefit from reading. It is a must reading for those who shall teach others about clinical behaviour analysis and diagnostic procedures in behaviour therapy." --Scandinavian Journal of Behaviour Therapy
