Sociology and Social Research (RLE Social Theory)

Sociology and Social Research (RLE Social Theory)

A social science which has become so remote from the society which pays for its upkeep is ultimately doomed, threatened less by repression than by intellectual contempt and financial neglect. This is the message of the authors of this book in this reassessment of the evolution and present state of British sociology.Their investigation analyses the discipline as a social institution, whose product is inexorably shaped by the everyday circumstances of its producers; it is the concrete outcome of people’s work, rather than a body of abstract ideas. Drawing upon their varied experience as teachers and researchers, they identify three major trends in contemporary sociology. First, that the discipline’s rapid expansion has led to a retreat from rigorous research into Utopian and introspective theorising. Second, that the concept of sociological research is being taught in a totally false way because of this, and encourages ‘research’ within a wholly academic environment. Third, that the current unpopularity of sociology with academics, prospective students and politicians is no coincidence, but a reflection of the conditions under which sociology is now produced and practised. In Sociology and Social Research the authors suggest substantial changes in sociological research, the way in which it is carried out and the conditions under which it is undertaken. Their book is a timely warning to fellow sociologists when the profession is under attack as a result of public expenditure cuts.

Named a most anticipated book of 2025 by Vulture The Guardian Financial Times The Observer The Times (London) Literary Hub "A picture of postwar England unlike any other . . . A highly original memoir that will provoke, amuse, beguile--and endure." --Antony Quinn, Financial Times "Homework is wonderful Geoff-Dyer writing, which we've all learned to crave; something to delight and to move us and to edify us on every page. I find him an irresistible writer." --Richard Ford A portrait of a young boy, who keeps passing exams--and of a changing England in the 1960s and 1970s. The only child of a sheet-metal worker and a dinner lady who worked at the canteen of the local school, Geoff Dyer grew up in a world shaped by memories of the Depression and the Second World War. But far from being a story of hardship overcome, this loving memoir is a celebration of opportunities afforded by the postwar settlement, of which the author was an unconscious beneficiary. The crux comes at the age of eleven with the exam that decided the future of generations of British schoolkids: secondary modern or the transformative possibilities of grammar school? One of the lucky winners, Dyer goes to grammar school, where he develops a love of literature (and beer and prog rock). Mapping a path from primary school through the tribulations of teenage sport, gig-going, romantic fumblings, fights (well, getting punched in the face), and other misadventures with comic affection, Homework takes us to the threshold of university, where Dyer gets the first intimations that a short geographical journey--just forty miles--might extend to the length of a life. Recalling an eroded but strangely resilient England, Homework traces, in perfectly phrased and hilarious detail, roots that extend into the deep foundations of class society.

The Last Days of Roger Federer: And Other Endings
One of Esquire's best books of spring 2022An extended meditation on late style and last works from "one of our greatest living critics" (Kathryn Schulz, New York). How and when do artists and athletes know that their careers are coming to an end? What if the end comes early in a writer's life? How to keep going even as the ability to do so diminishes? In this ingeniously structured investigation, Geoff Dyer sets his own encounter with late middle age against the last days and last works of writers, painters, musicians, and sports stars who've mattered to him throughout his life. With playful charm and penetrating intelligence, he considers Friedrich Nietzsche's breakdown in Turin, Bob Dylan's reinventions of old songs, J.M.W. Turner's proto-abstract paintings of blazing light, Jean Rhys's late-life resurgence, and John Coltrane's final works. Ranging from Burning Man to Beethoven, from Eve Babitz to William Basinski, and from Annie Dillard to Giorgio de Chirico, Dyer's study of last things is also a book about how to go on living with art and beauty--and the sudden rejuvenation offered by books, films, and music discovered late in life. Praised by Kathryn Schulz as "one of our greatest living critics, not of the arts but of life itself," and by Tom Bissell as "perhaps the most bafflingly great writer at work in the English language today," Dyer has now blended criticism, memoir, and badinage of the most serious kind into something entirely new. The Last Days of Roger Federer is a summation of Dyer's passions and the perfect introduction to his sly and joyous work.
Discerning and Interpreting PROPHETIC REVELATION
Readers go straight into the prophetic action with an honest, down to earth yet fully supernatural approach to handling the prophetic gift. The concepts and stories shared bring into sharp focus the issues faced when operating in the prophetic realm. The text explores the psychological impacts that need to be negotiated, as well as how the gift of discernment operates - both rightly and wrongly. Readers may well feel that they are sharing a personal journey. A flowing yet concise style, interweaves Biblical principles with illustrations that are as up-to-date as using social media as a platform for prophetic ministry.
Sacred Weapons, Profane Enemies: Saint John Paul II's War on Communism
The 2014 canonization of John Paul II and the quarter-century anniversary of the fall of Polish Communism were the main motivations in writing this book, which is richly illustrated with nearly 100 pictures and very reasonably priced! The book tells the story of how Saint John Paul II politically deployed sacred weapons and profane enemies in his war on communism. The effects of his deployment - chiefly during his three pilgrimages to communist Poland - were to evoke and refashion nationalist and religious cultural memories shaped over centuries and thereby influence the prevailing political culture of opposition. In his doing so, the Polish Pope inspired the opposition to peacefully and successfully challenge a communist regime that had at its disposal a full panoply of repressive forces.
