Martha Graham: When Dance Became Modern

Martha Graham: When Dance Became Modern

Neil Baldwin

A major biography--the first in three decades--of one of the most important artistic forces of the twentieth century, the legendary American dancer and choreographer who upended dance, propelling the art form into the modern age, and whose profound and pioneering influence is still being felt today. "Brings together all the elements of Graham's colorful life...with wit, verve, critical discernment, and a powerful lyricism."--Mary Dearborn, acclaimed author of Ernest Hemingway Time magazine called her "the Dancer of the Century." Her technique, used by dance companies throughout the world, became the first long-lasting alternative to the idiom of classical ballet. Her pioneering movements--powerful, dynamic, jagged, edgy, forthright--combined with her distinctive system of training, were the epitome of American modernism, performance as art. Her work continued to astonish and inspire for more than sixty years as she choreographed more than 180 works. At the heart of Graham's work: movement that could express inner feeling. Neil Baldwin, author of admired biographies of Man Ray ("Truly definitive . . . absolutely fascinating" --Patricia Bosworth) and Thomas Edison ("Absorbing, gripping, a major contribution to our understanding of a remarkable man and a remarkable era" --Robert Caro), gives us the artist and performer, the dance monument who led a cult of dance worshippers as well as the woman herself in all of her complexity. Here is Graham, from her nineteenth-century (born in 1894) Allegheny, Pennsylvania, childhood, to becoming the star of the Denishawn exotic ballets, and in 1926, at age thirty-two, founding her own company (now the longest-running dance company in America). Baldwin writes of how the company flourished during the artistic explosion of New York City's midcentury cultural scene; of Erick Hawkins, in 1936, fresh from Balanchine's School of American Ballet, a handsome Midwesterner fourteen years her junior, becoming Graham's muse, lover, and eventual spouse. Graham, inspiring the next generation of dancers, choreographers, and teachers, among them: Merce Cunningham and Paul Taylor. Baldwin tells the story of this large, fiercely lived life, a life beset by conflict, competition, and loneliness--filled with fire and inspiration, drive, passion, dedication, and sacrifice in work and in dance creation.

This marvelous debut novel by former New York Times correspondent and National Book Award--winner Gloria Emerson is a witty and deeply affecting portrait of the stubborn hopes and disillusionment of a privileged woman who dreams of making a difference in the world. The polite correspondence she shares with the novelist Graham Greene inspires Molly Benson to see him as her moral guiding light. After his death in 1991, Molly sets out to honor his memory by going on a mission with two friends to Algeria at the start of that nation's brutal civil war, intending to save intellectuals from Islamic fundamentalist hit squads. But nothing in her genteel existence has prepared her for the perilous journey on which she and her humble delegation are about to embark.

"God calls us to invest our time, our very lives, primarily in people, not in projects or possessions."—Billy Graham Billy Graham is one of those rare individuals who has become a legend in his own lifetime. Recognized as the world's most famous evangelist, he has preached to more people than anyone in the history of religion. Billy Graham's influence, however, reaches far beyond the pulpit as he has become a worldwide crusader for religion, a spokesman for political and social change, and a sublimely successful businessman and fundraiser. The wisdom and guidance he has offered the world are captured in Billy Graham Speaks, a unique portrait of the reverend in his own words—culled from sermons, newscasts, articles, and interviews. Graham talks about everything from marriage, children, and faith, to religious tolerance, leadership, and integrity, to popes, presidents, and ordinary people. He reflects on his life as an evangelist who has traveled the world and witnessed some of this century's milestone events, including the advent of racial integration in the South, the fall of Communism, and the social and political struggles in Northern Ireland and South Africa. He looks within to confront his own feelings of self-doubt and discuss his undying belief in God that has been central to his life for more than three quarters of a century. Here is just a sample of what you'll find inside: *"All over the world, whenever I meet people face to face, I am made aware of this personal need among the famous and successful as well as the lonely and obscure." *"I'm looking forward to death. I'll be very happy to get out of this body and into the world that's being prepared." *"As long as there is a soul to be won by Christ, I'm under orders by the Lord to go try to win that soul to Christ." *"If anything bothers me, it is the thought that at Judgment Day I may find that I have not been as faithful as some other minister who is slugging it out day after day with few visible achievements . . ." The world listens when BILLY GRAHAM speaks "The more the archeologist digs and the more the scientist discovers, the greater the confirmation of the truth of the Bible." "Billions and billions of stars are out there, and behind them all is God." "It's going to be quite a revealing thing at the Last Judgment when we see everyone standing naked before God." "I am only a Western Union messenger boy, delivering a telegram from God to the door of humanity." Like other Speaks books, Billy Graham Speaks was created through the independent research of the author Janet Lowe. It has not been authorized by its subject.

R. B. Cunninghame Graham (1852–1936) was one of the most brilliant and mercurial characters of his day. Known as 'Don Roberto' and 'the Modern Don Quixote' because of his Spanish blood and impetuous life-style, and as 'the Uncrowned King of Scotland' because of his descent from King Robert II, he was a paradoxical man whose career was astonishingly varied. After an early period as an adventurer, when he worked as a cattle-rancher and horse-dealer in South America and Texas, he embarked on a stormy political career. He was the first socialist in Parliament, was gaoled after assailing the police at the Battle of Trafalgar Square on Bloody Sunday, 1887, later became the founder and president of the first Labour Party, and was eventually elected president of the Scottish National Party. Meanwhile he travelled in Morocco disguised as an Arab sheik and prospected for gold in Spain.

The ecstatic face of a disco dancer in Berlin; a rural panorama in Derry, where a country road has been made into a Pollock-like canvas of red, white and blue; an ashtray, framed by a lacy spray of blood in a Barcelona toilet. Paul Graham uses and abuses classic genres of photography - the portrait, the landscape, the still life - to map a cultural topography. His jewel-like colours and unsettling compositions reveal how social relations and political trauma are inscribed in the everyday. This book brings together for the first time all of Graham's successive series, from his journey along the A1 in Britain to intimate studies of Japan. Graham's work has been celebrated in exhibitions around the world, including The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and Tate Britain, London.Art historian Andrew Wilson has written extensively on contemporary European art and is the author of Gustav Metzger: Damaged Nature, Auto-Destructive Art. He charts the development of Graham's most significant series as defined by the journeys the artist has taken, weaving relations between an emerging aesthetic and the specifics of time and place. In the Interview, Paul Graham speaks with British artist Gillian Wearing, internationally renowned for her photographs and videos that explore the imaginary worlds of ordinary people. Focusing on a triptych from the New Europe series is the celebrated American writer Carol Squiers, Senior Editor at American Photo magazine and editor of The Critical Image: Essays on Contemporary Photography. In juxtaposition with this work, Graham has chosen texts by Japanese authors Kazuo Ishiguro and Haruki Murakami. A series of notes by the artist and an interview with Lewis Baltz provide further insight.
