Concepts in Toxicology

Concepts in Toxicology

John H Duffus; Douglas M Templeton; Monica Nordberg

Toxicology has never been more important. Advances in chemistry and technology offering improvements in the quality of human life become ever more rapid, bringing with them the potential for new toxicity hazards. This has led to legislation requiring toxicity testing and risk assessment for all chemicals and their uses. The new REACH (Risk Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals) Regulation has profound economic consequences because, without official authorization, a chemical cannot be marketed. This book explains, in depth, the ideas underlying current advances in toxicology and its application in regulating and ensuring the safe use of chemicals. Sometimes old ideas have become assumptions that have become embedded in related laws and regulation, even though the thinking of toxicologists has moved on in line with developments in science. This leads to confusion in public understanding that the book should dispel. There are also fundamental ideas in toxicology that are not well understood concerning the concepts of hazard and risk and even about what constitutes a chemical. For many people the word 'chemical' describes manmade substances only. In fact, it is correctly applied to all substances that exist, from pure elements to the most complex biological molecules in food and medicines. This is further complicated by the complex distinction between the descriptors, 'toxic' and 'nontoxic'. Developments in epigenetics are revolutionizing our understanding of mutagenicity and carcinogenicity. Improved understanding of apoptosis and necrosis leads to improved interpretation of potentially toxic effects at the cellular level. The recently defined term 'chemical speciation' is driving more targeted research on the toxicity of inorganic chemicals. This book explains the concepts implied by key toxicological terms using diagrams to illustrate the relationships between them. It is an essential aid to understanding the new demands from regulators of risk assessment and to the implementation of appropriate risk management.
Bullion Flows and Monetary Policies in England and the Low Countries, 1350–1500
Did ’money matter’ in the economic history of medieval Europe? In these essays John Munro has pursued the controversies surrounding the monetary (not ’monetarist’) history of the period, specifically in relation to England and Flanders, and the other Burgundian Low Countries, during the late Middle Ages. He argues that, without doubt, monetary factors and policies were crucial, and attempts to integrate them with other factors, themselves often of equal significance, such as demographic change or institutional controls. The focus is upon the international flow of precious metals through the region and various related economic themes: the so-called late-medieval ’bullion famine’; the relation between monetary and price changes; the role of coinage in financing warfare ; ’bullionist’ mint policies as both fiscal and monetary remedies for perceived economic, political, and military problems; and the consequences of warfare, war-financing, monetary policies, and related monetary problems for the two countries' commerce, finance and industries, especially those involving woollen textiles.

Why did Michael Jordan quit basketball and take up baseball? Why was Martina Navratilova so successful as a professional tennis player? These and many other questions about aspects of motivation and emotion in sport are addressed in this book which is newly available in paperback. Reversal theory's systematic conceptual framework allows a unique perspective for interpreting behaviour in sport contexts. Within each chapter, real-life examples are combined with research findings to provide an understanding of the emotional background and changes which accompany the individual's unique experience in sport. In addition, suggestions as to alications of reversal theory in new areas of sport psychology and the future direction of reversal theory-based sport research are outlined. For those interested in a truly insightful understanding of human behaviour in sport, this book will be required reading.
Moral Foundation of Democracy

Moral Foundation of Democracy

John H Hallowell

Liberty Fund Inc

nidottu
Hallowell makes a significant argument in favour of the importance of moral values in the orderly functioning of modern democracies. Hallowell begins with a survey of the role that classical liberalism and faith in man as a reasonable, moral, and spiritual actor played in the emergence of democratic self-government. He sharply criticises positivist thought and moral relativism as direct challenges to the notion that transcendent truths guide individuals in their actions and influence how people participate in a democratic society. Hallowell reminds us that at its core, a well-functioning democracy must be based on a fundamental respect for the dignity of the individual.

Presidents, the Presidency, and the Political Environment
The opening chapter introduces the book's approach as well as the institutional development of the presidency and its organizational structure. Chapters 2 through 6 provide an extended discussion of the institutional presidency, first examining the working relationships of the White House with Congress and with the media, and then looking at policy-making in differing policy areas. In each of these five chapters, Kessel introduces the actors on the White House staff or in cabinet departments or agencies. He then considers their activities, looking at those common throughout the institutional presidency - and those specific to the task, such as negotiation in foreign policy, coping with business cycles in economics, and handling projects and patronage in dealing with Congress. In the final two chapters, Kessel asks what presidents have been able to accomplish. In Chapter 7, he evaluates, for each contemporary president, examples of policy success, failure, and mixed results. He broadens the analysis in his concluding chapter to examine larger patterns of presidential accomplishment. His conclusion: all presidents have mixed records, but in the aggregate, presidents succeed more often than they fail by a factor of 3 to 2.

In 1879 Edwin Curtiss set out for the wild St. Francis River region of northeastern Arkansas to collect archaeological specimens for the Peabody Museum. By the time Curtiss completed his fifty-six days of Arkansas fieldwork, he had sent nearly 1,000 pottery vessels to Cambridge and had put the Peabody on the map as the repository of one of the world's finest collections of Mississippian artifacts. John House brings us a lively account of the work of this nineteenth-century fieldworker, the Native culture he explored, and the rich legacies left by both. The result is a vivid re-creation of the world of Indian peoples in the Mississippi River lowlands in the last centuries before European contact. The volume's focus is Curtiss's collection of charming and expressive effigy vessels: earthenware bowls and bottles that incorporate forms of fish, birds, mammals, amphibians, and humans, including the Peabody's famous red-and-white head vase.

Urban legends, Las Vegas, and life in the U.S. Army are deftly captured in these stories by novelist John Irsfeld. With imagination bordering on the quirky or absurd, Irsfeld brings back to life a fictional character from Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby and presents Elvis as alive and in hiding years after his reported death. ""The Marriage Auditors"" brings to mind George Orwell's 1984, only in this case it's not Big Brother watching individuals but a team who monitor marriages and force the dissolution of those they deem unsuccessful. Irsfeld also writes of life as he has known it. He has, for instance, lived in the shadow of the Las Vegas Strip for years. In the Las Vegas stories, he looks at the city and sees a playground where little about life seems real. Tourists and residents alike operate in the sounds and shadows of the cards, the wheels, and the slots. The army stories in this book spring from Irsfeld's own experiences in the U. S. Infantry. With a thorough and probably hard-earned knowledge of army ways, he captures the reality of barracks life among men who may at any time find themselves sent to a far-off unfamiliar place called Vietnam. Several of the stories follow one man, eventually demonstrating the effect of the army on him when he becomes a civilian. Irsfeld's view of America is not one of bucolic landscapes, happy families, or settled societies. During these times of wars and rumors of war, his tales fit our national life and express our fears and distractions.
Handbook Of Hypnotic Phenomena In Psychotherapy

Handbook Of Hypnotic Phenomena In Psychotherapy

Despite their clinical utility, hypnotic phenomena are vastly underutilized by therapists in their work with patients. Whether this is due to uncertainty about how to use specific techniques constructively or how to elicit particular phenomena, or anxiety about not being able to obtain a desired result, this volume will guide hypnotherapists toward higher levels of clinical expertise. By describing varied hypnotic phenomena and how they can be used as vehicles of intervention, The Phenomenon of Ericksonian Hypnosis takes the therapist beyond these fundamental applications toward a broader, more sophisticated scope of practice. This immensely readable book addresses the selection, eliciting, and therapeutic use of hypnotic phenomena that are natural outgrowths of trance. It offers step?by?step instruction on eliciting age progression, hypnotic dreaming, hypnotic deafness, anethesia, negative and positive hallucination, hypermnesia, catalepsy, and other hypnotic phenomena. The book includes specific instruction on how to use the phenomena manifested in trance to provide more effective treatment. Numerous case examples vividly illustrate intervention with anxiety disorders, trauma and abuse, dissociative disorders, depression, marital and family problems, sports and creative performance, pain, hypersensitivity to sound, psychotic symptomatology, and other conditions. The Phenomenon of Ericksonian Hypnosis will be used by therapists as a valuable clinical tool to expand their conceptualizations of hypnosis, and thus enable them to offer a wider repertoire of skills with which they can confidently treat clients.
Debris from a Public Dining Place in the Athenian Agora

Debris from a Public Dining Place in the Athenian Agora

In 1972 a large deposit of pottery and other finds from the mid-5th century B.C. were found in a pit just west of the Royal Stoa in the Athenian Agora. It contained many fragments of figured pottery, more than half of which were large drinking vessels. Twenty-one fragments were inscribed with a graffito known to be a mark of public ownership. The authors conclude that the pottery is refuse from one of the public dining facilities that served the magistrates of Classical Athens. The volume examines the archaeological context and chronology of the deposit and gives a detailed analysis of all the finds. A complete catalogue arranges the finds by type and in chronological order.
The Metaphysics

The Metaphysics

Metaphysics is the study of existence at the highest level of generality. It is traditionally characterised as the study of "being qua being" - of being in general rather than specifically of this or that sort. Accordingly, the salient task of the field is to achieve a clearer understanding of the concepts and principles of being, existence, and reality. As such, metaphysics has been an established sector of philosophy since the time of Aristotle's initial systematisation of the subject in the fourth century B.C.E.In line with tradition, distinguished philosopher Nicholas Rescher presents key topics that have always figured on the agenda of metaphysics: the nature and rationale of existence, the differentiation of what is actual from the unreal and mere possibility, and the prospects and limits of our knowledge of the real. Though a work of philosophical sophistication and logical rigour, "Metaphysics" displays a clarity of exposition that makes it suitable for use as a text or supplementary reader in upper-class undergraduate and graduate philosophy courses.
Depression and Its Treatment

Depression and Its Treatment

Everyone feels blue now and then. Most of these feelings are short-lived and disappear over time, but sometimes the depression is so severe that it interferes with our lives. At least 10% of us will experience a major depression during our lives and, at any given time, 5% of us could benefit from treatment. "Depression and Its Treatment" is for anyone who is being treated for depression, considering treatment, or just wondering whether or not he or she is depressed. It is also for family and friends of people with depression, and anyone interested in understanding what depression is and how it is treated. Is depression caused by a chemical imbalance? Is depression inherited? Do children get depressed? Are antidepressant medications safe? These are some of the questions addressed by Drs. Greist and Jefferson in the revised edition of this book. Written in an easy-to-follow question and answer format, this helpful guide walks the reader through the maze of new information available on this mental health problem. It shows how to identify symptoms of depression, what professional services are available, and where to find additional help. Drs. Geist and Jefferson share detailed information about the effectiveness of all available treatments - from psychotherapy to medication and exercise. This guide should prove valuable to all those interested in understanding this common disorder.
