The Diary of Thomas Noakes: Struggles During Years of War, Drought and Hard Times
Thomas Noakes would be a forgotten man, possibly known for his painting of the Civil War Battle of Corpus Christi or the 1875 bandit raid on his Nuecestown store. But he kept a diary of his mundane life, telling of his struggles to exist in South Texas during the hard years of the Civil War. From 1858 to 1867 Noakes recorded his life as a British immigrant to South Texas as he attempted to establish a cattle-raising operation. His struggles were interrupted by the Civil War. His diary details the hardships of life in South Texas exacerbated by a severe drought and freezing winters. Murphy Givens, as Editor, has extensively annotated the diary to clarify Noakes entries.

The Royal Institution of Great Britain is renowned the world over, first, because it is a premier arena for the advancement of new scientific and technological knowledge; and second because it highlights the advance of knowledge of all kinds. It bridges the sciences and the humanities, and as much publicity is given to advances in the arts, archaeology, architecture, drama and literature as to the pure and applied sciences. More famous scientists have lived and worked in the Royal Institution than in any other laboratory in the world. A roll-call includes Rumford, Davy, Faraday, Tyndall, Dewar, Rayleigh, W. H. Bragg, W. L. Bragg and George Porter. Not is it only the home of continuous electricity, it is also the birthplace of many aspects of molecular biology and viruses and enzymology. Some fifteen scientists who have won the Nobel Prize have, at one time or another, worked or lectured at the RI. And eminent individuals, like Howard Carter and Coleridge, have lectured there. Albemarle Street - Portraits, Personalities and Presentations at The Royal institution is a lively and compelling personal selection of the remarkable personalities and achievements of some of the extraordinary scientists and individuals who, during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, worked or lectured at 21 Albemarle Street in Mayfair, central London. John Meurig Thomas offers a unique and valuable insight into the history of this prestigious address, having himself lived and worked at the Royal Institution for some twenty years.

Architects of Structural Biology is an amalgam of memoirs, biography, and intellectual history of the personalities and single-minded devotion of four scientists who are among the greatest in modern times. These three chemists and one physicist, all Nobel laureates, played a pivotal role in the creation of a new and pervasive branch of biology. This led in turn to major developments in medicine and to the treatment of diseases as a result of advances made in arguably one of the greatest centres of scientific research ever: the Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, which they helped to establish. Their work and that of their predecessors at the Royal Institution in London reflects the broader cultural, scientific and educational strength of the UK from the early 19th century onwards. The book also illustrates the nurturing of academic life in the collegiate system, exemplified by the activities of, and cross-fertilization within, a small Cambridge college.

We are all called to be saints This is what we are made for and this is the only way to happiness. Life in Christ, a life lived according to the will of God, is the only way to live out our dignity and to experience the freedom we so long for. This book helps to shed light on the glorious calling we have received to become saints. A life of sin leads to death and despair, a life of grace and moral uprightness leads to happiness. This is a simple truth that we must all discover and live. Catholic morality is often seen in a negative way. We often think morality is about "what I can't do." It's true that Christ's teachings on the moral life limit us from engaging in actions contrary to His will and contrary to our dignity. But morality is so much more than just a list of restrictions. Morality is also about living in freedom It's about living in the freedom that our Triune God has in store for us Nihil Obstat & Imprimatur About this Series: The My Catholic Life series is a three volume series written as a complete summary of our glorious Catholic faith The goal of these books is to answer the difficult and deep questions of life in a clear and understandable way. For almost a half a century, scholars and practitioners have debated what the connections should be between public administration and the public. Does the public serve principally as citizen-owners, those to whom administrators are responsible? Are members of the public more appropriately viewed as the customers of government? Or, in an increasingly networked world, do they serve more as the partners of public administrators in the production of public services? This book starts from the premise that the public comes to government not principally in one role but in all three roles, as citizens and customers and partners. The purpose of the book is to address the dual challenge that reality implies: (1) to help public administrators and other public officials to understand the complex nature of the public they face, and (2) to provide recommendations for how public administrators can most effectively interact with the public in the different roles. Using this comprehensive perspective, Citizen, Customer, Partner helps students, practitioners, and scholars understand when and how the public should be integrated into the practice of public administration. Most chapters in Citizen, Customer, Partner include multiple boxed cases that illustrate the chapter’s content with real-world examples. The book concludes with an extremely useful Appendix that collects and summarizes the 40 Design Principles – specific advice for public organizations on working with the public as customers, partners, and citizens.

This book is designed to describe the special tasks, talents, and tools for leading in the pursuit of the public good, especially but not exclusively in the public sector. Despite a glut of books on leadership, no other book to date has attempted to speak to the specific challenges and strategies for leadership that focuses on improving the lot of society as a whole.Leading for the Common Good is designed for current and prospective managers whose work focuses at least in part on creating public value, that is, on improving society as a whole. Many of those managers work in the public sector, but many also work in the nonprofit sector or in parts of the private sector with a particular interest in public goods (e.g., environmental planning, private education). Many of these managers will work in all of these sectors over the course of their careers, always with a concern for how their efforts contribute to the larger community. This book will explore the distinctive nature of public service leadership with an eye toward serving at least two purposes: (1) to develop a better understanding of the nature of public service leadership, including when and where it is desirable, and (2) to assist practicing and potential public service leaders in carrying out their leadership roles. The book will include occasional boxed profiles of specific managers who have excelled in the pursuit of public value. These profiles will be used both to illustrate points from specific chapters and to demonstrate the difference that committed managers can make. The principal markets for the book are likely to be (1) master’s students in public administration or public policy, (2) advanced undergraduates in public policy, public administration, etc., and (3) practicing public administrators.

The book of Revelation is perhaps the most theologically complex and literarily sophisticated text in the New Testament. In this commentary John Christopher Thomas and Frank Macchia make the brilliant but challenging text of Revelation more accessible and easier to understand on its own terms, rather than as a futuristic prophecy. In addition to their literary, exegetical, and theological analysis of the text, Thomas and Macchia offer sustained theological essays on the book's most significant themes and issues, accenting especially the underappreciated place of the Holy Spirit in the theology of the book. Uniquely, Thomas and Macchia work to locate and help readers better understand the original audiences to whom Revelation was written by examining Revelation's storyline and its connection to the broader Johannine community.
