María Zambrano (1904–91) is widely regarded as one of the most original Spanish thinkers of the twentieth century. Her biggest contribution to intellectual history is undoubtedly her poetic reason and her unique attempt to overcome the limiting coordinates of the framework of rationality established by the Enlightenment. Having spent forty-five years in exile, the relevance of this Spanish Republican thinker has only been recognised in recent decades. The purpose of this monograph is to reveal the political dimension inherent to Zambrano’s proposal for an alternative rationality through interrogation of existing assumptions regarding Zambrano’s thought.

Maria Stuart, described as Schiller's most perfect play, is a finely balanced, inventive account of the last day of the captive Queen of Scotland, caught up in a great contest for the throne of England after the death of Henry VIII and over the question of England's religious confession. Hope for and doubt about Mary's deliverance grow in the first two acts, given to the Scottish and the English queen respectively, reach crisis at the center of the play, where the two queens meet in a famous scene in a castle park, and die away in acts four and five, as the action advances to its inevitable end. The play is at once classical tragedy of great fineness, costume drama of the highest order-a spectacle on the stage-and one of the great moments in the long tradition of classical rhetoric, as Elizabeth's ministers argue for and against execution of a royal prisoner. Flora Kimmich's new translation carefully preserves the spirit of the original: the pathos and passion of Mary in captivity, the high seriousness of Elizabeth's ministers in council, and the robust comedy of that queen's untidy private life. Notes to the text identify the many historical figures who appear in the text, describe the political setting of the action, and draw attention to the structure of the play.Roger Paulin's introduction discusses the many threads of the conflict in Maria Stuart and enriches our understanding of this much-loved, much-produced play. Maria Stuart is the last of a series of five new translations of Schiller's major plays, accompanied by notes to the text and an authoritative introduction.

A naïve English farmer’s wife travels alone to Poznan, Poland, to visit the Zachodni Institute; an archive that holds records of the wartime Polish Resistance. It is the start of an adventure into history, and all that had been hidden since the Nuremberg Trials where Stalin and dismissed all evidence submitted by the Poles and the ensuing 45-year Russian occupation of Poland ensured their silence. On a quest to distinguish fact from fiction, Cynthia Engelmann investigates the truth of an unpublished manuscript bequeathed to her upon the death of Maria Weychan. Maria’s memoire had revealed an extraordinary tale of intrigue, romance, imprisonment and survival, as told a by a young Polish dancer in Berlin after the end of World War II. She had survived life in a camp with her mother for longer than had previously been thought possible. Had they collaborated with the Germans to protect themselves? Finding herself part of a movement to collate events of history previously hidden and silenced, Cynthia uncovers the leads of the evidence to share the truth of Maria’s memoire.

The affair of George IV and Maria Fitzherbert is notorious. A young Catholic widow became the secret wife of the heir to the throne because she had refused to become his mistress.Munson reveals a genuine love story between the spoilt, egocentric prince and the older woman who brought peace and order to his life of restlessness and excess; resulting in a marriage that defied English law and broke all the rules of monarchy. Two themes dominate - the love of a kind-hearted woman for a charming but faithless prince, and the perilous state of the monarchy.
