Nick Ambrose, aspiring author and recovering alcoholic is on the verge of success. His first book is a hit and opening doors for him. He's met Sera, young, beautiful and seems to be the girl of his dreams. Life is good. What could possible go wrong?"Dark, cold, trembling. Where was I? I shook my head and slowly the black turned to a dull grey. I opened my eyes and strained to see something - anything. My head throbbed as if a ping hammer was constantly pounding from the inside. The more I concentrated and tried to focus, the more I felt the pain in my head. It was overwhelming, and there seemed nothing I could do to overcome it. Why was I hurting so? The tumultuous angst was indescribable. I seemed totally immobilized, body, mind and soul. Where could I obtain help? Was there anyone out there?" Barry, Nick's best friend is MIA and Nick now finds himself all alone. Demons from his past now come crashing into the fray, challenging all that Nick has worked so hard for. Could even Houdini find an escape from the binds that tie?

Captain Nick Torres is a 32 year old, highly decorated Officer and leader of an elite Army Ranger Spec Ops team. He and his men were part of 1st battalion stationed out of Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Georgia. They were strictly covert operators with multiple assignments in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya. Torres, or Hawk as the men called him, was a very demanding man. Early in his Ranger career he served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and was part of the 75th Ranger Regiment out of Fort Benning, Georgia. His regiment was part of Task Force 121, responsible for hunting down and eventually capturing Saddam Hussein in 2003. His experience during the early months of 2003 hardened and shaped him into the leader he became. However, Captain Torres had a dark side. A side that sought out careless acts, seemingly calling on death to find him as if war wasn't enough. Perhaps it was his tragic childhood pushing him towards activities others would find absolutely insane It was this desire, drive and insanity which empowered him during combat. This made him the type of soldier Generals called upon to lead men into war.
A new collection of prophetic essays from one of the sharpest practitioners of the form Mark Slouka writes from a particular vantage point, one invoked by Thoreau, who wished "to improve the nick of time . . . to stand on the meeting of two eternities, the past and future." At this bewildering convergence, Slouka asks us to consider what it means to be human and what we must revive, or reject, in order to retain our humanity in the modern world. Collected over fifteen years, these essays include fascinating explorations of the relationship between memory and history and the nature of "tragedy" in a media-driven culture; meditations on the transcendent "wisdom" of the natural world and the role of silence in an age of noise; and arguments in defense of the political value of leisure time and the importance of the humanities in an age defined by the language of science and industry. Written in Slouka's supple and unerring prose, celebratory, critical, and passionate, Essays from the Nick of Time reawakens us to the moment and place in which we find ourselves, caught between the fading presence of the past and the neon lure of the future.
