Notes on Nursing

Notes on Nursing

Florence Nightingale

The History Press Ltd
2006
nidottu
It is hard to believe that it is almost 150 years since Florence Nightingale penned her seminal work on nursing. She was the first modern nurse, the first to recognise the connection between the dirt of the hospital and the number of deaths therein. It is a sad fact that more soldiers died in the Crimea in British hospitals than died on the battlefields of Sevastopol, Balaklava and the rest of the Black Sea peninsula. Florence Nightingale's practical and eminently sensible advice still rings true today and her "Notes on Nursing" should be recommended reading for any modern day nurse.
Notes to my Daughter

Notes to my Daughter

Alexander Pierce

The History Press Ltd
2010
nidottu
When Christine Cuss (née Pierce), was born in 1934, her doting father began a journal addressed to her. At first he recorded everyday details such as first teeth and family holidays, but as the 1930s progressed his words took on a more sinister tone, as Europe and the world prepared for war. As well as being a rare historical document, Notes to my Daughter shows another side to the Second World War. It was written by a man who was torn between his duty to his country and his duty to his family. In a poignant and heart-warming turn of events, at every crossroads Alexander Pierce chose his family, not least his only daughter, Christine. This little family is an example of the spirit and determination of the British people through difficult times. Old or young, the sentiments expressed in these love letters to a cherished child will not fail to touch and move all who read them, and open a window into the extraordinary life of an ordinary family.

Notes on Nursing (Barnes & Noble Library of Essential Reading)
No one knows if Florence Nightingale deliberately set out to become a nursing champion, but it is clear that the 1859 publication of her book "Notes on Nursing: What it Is, And What It Is Not" secured her place in nursing history. By the author's own admission, the work was not written as a training manual for nurses. Yet in many ways, this classic book, which was a best seller when issued and has been continuously in print since it was published 150 years ago, defines the precepts that became the prototype for contemporary nursing practice, provides a compelling historical perspective on the evolution of healthcare delivery, and provides an intimate glimpse into the Victorian Age. Although nurses no longer empty chamber pots, open chimney flues, or worry about their crinoline skirts catching fire, they may be interested to find among Nightingale's writings such modern-day concepts as the mind-body connection, plant therapy, and pet therapy.

Notes from the Underworld

Notes from the Underworld

Stefano Corbo

Since early times, humans have explored the space below their feet for different purposes: to flee persecution and war, to find protection from severe climates, to improve urban life—and more recently, to solve environmental problems. A rare look at old and new subterranean structures from an architect's perspective, this seminal book examines the underworld through the lenses of wartime, life and death, religious and secular rituals, and adaptive reuse. The atlas of 80+ international projects ranges widely in time period and type, from a house in a defunct nuclear silo to an Arctic seed bank, a Beirut nightclub, art venues, an Italian winery, and a monastery carved into a mountain. All are surprising examples of how invisible man-made spaces follow the same cultural and economic cues as their visible counterparts and are places where we store, hide, repress, and live.

Notes from Toyota-land

Notes from Toyota-land

Darius Mehri; Robert Perrucci

Cornell University Press
2005
sidottu
In 1996, Darius Mehri traveled to Japan to work as a computer simulation engineer within the Toyota production system. Once there, he found a corporate experience far different from what he had expected. Notes from Toyota-land, based on a diary that Mehri kept during his three years at an upper-level Toyota group company, provides a unique insider's perspective on daily work life in Japan and charts his transformation from a wide-eyed engineer eager to be part of the "Japanese Miracle" to a social critic, troubled by Japanese corporate practices. Mehri documents the sophisticated "culture of rules" and organizational structure that combine to create a profound control over workers. The work group is cynically used to encourage employees to work harder and harder, he found, and his other discoveries confirmed his doubts about the working conditions under the Japanese Miracle. For example, he learned that male employees treated their female counterparts as short-term employees, cheap labor, and potential wives. Mehri also describes a surprisingly unhealthy work environment, a high rate of injuries due to inadequate training, fast line speeds, crowded factories, racism, and lack of team support. And in conversations with his colleagues, he uncovered a culture of intimidation, subservience, and vexed relationships with many aspects of their work and surroundings. As both an engaging memoir of cross-cultural misunderstanding and a primer on Japanese business and industrial practices, Notes from Toyota-land will be a revelation to everyone who believes that Japanese business practices are an ideal against which to measure success.
