David is one of the most perfect characters on which to do a study of leadership. We can learn a lot from David's life. We can learn what to do and what not to do. I think both are important. No one is perfect and learning those tough lessons on someone else's behalf is as important as learning the more positive ones. David was God's anointed. He started as a shepherd and through God's leadership, he became a ruler of a nation and a shepherd over His people. David did not set out to be Israel's king. He did not set out to 'be a leader.' He was thrust into circumstances not of his making. He went through his own crucible time and time again. Through each experience he put more tools in his toolbox so to speak. Although not perfect by any measure, his zeal for God and faith in God became the standard that all future kings of Israel would be measured against. We can learn a lot from current and prior leaders, regardless of where we find them. Like the cook making a stew, you choose which ingredients and how much to use, and learn what works and what doesn't work for you along the way as you perfect your recipe.
Keeping Alive the Rumor of God

Can't you hear those little bells tinkling? Down on your knees--""they're bringing the sacraments to a dying God,"" wrote Heinrich Heine in 1834. It took a while but today it is happening. Across the Western world the traditional picture of God is dying, and institutional religion collapsing. Today we are trying something never done before, living with no agreed narrative that tells us who we are and with a materialist view of life. It isn't enough. An idea of God may have died but the mystery of our human life is of an inner depth which is not simply physical or material. Marvel, mystery, wonder, beauty, love, the numinous, the mysterium tremendum, remain the essence of who we are. What I am trying to do is describe this experience in such a way that those who have not had it can get a glimpse of it from inside and understand how it can give a life meaning and purpose. This is explored through a liberal Christian tradition committed to social justice and honest exploration. Scripture is vital to this but so are art, poetry, music, and beauty. When most people are looking the other way, we must keep the rumor of God alive.

Humor and Rumor in the Post-Soviet Authoritarian State
Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in Belarus, an example of an authoritarian state, Humor and Rumor in the Post-Soviet Authoritarian State presents over one hundred contemporary political jokes in the contexts of their performance. Throughout, Anastasiya Astapova demonstrates the salience of the joke genre, the multiplicity of humor manifestations, and the fundamental presence of intertextual links between jokes and another folk genre—rumor. Informed by real-life fieldwork in an authoritarian regime, Humor and Rumor in the Post-Soviet Authoritarian State challenges many common theories of political humor, including the interpretation of political jokes as weapons of the weak. It illustrates how jokes and rumors remind communities of their fears, support paranoia, shape conformist behavior, and, consequently, reinforce the existing hegemony. In this rare study on everyday life in and reactions to repressive regimes, Astapova unveils political humor as it is lived.

The Psychology of Rumor Or How The Flying Saucer Phenomenon Spread Throughout The Nation
Today, many Americans spend most of their time at UFO conventions, UFO pilgrimages, and New Age gatherings. Cities and local people have learned to capitalize on their UFO phenomena. Rumors of the 1947 crash of a flying saucer draw tourists to Roswell, New Mexico, which holds an annual UFO festival and sports its own UFO museum. However, there is no study of the role played by rumor in the development of the Flying Saucer phenomenon. In July 1947, the renowned psychologist Dr. Gordon W. Allport from Harvard University was once interviewed by a reporter from The New York Times about his book: The Psychology of Rumor. During the interview, He pointed out that: "The book concerns itself "with how current rumors are born and grow and how flying saucer epidemics spread throughout the nation." The author finished his book at the end of WW II and the dawn of the UFO age. Also, he feels the social atmosphere that permeated those years with the Roswell incident (1947) and Kenneth Arnold's (1947) first widely reported modern unidentified flying object sighting. However, his book was not intended to deal directly, and it is not about Flying Saucer rumors; the author realized that the exact mechanism that creates rumors could apply to Flying Saucers. We have republished, as a facsimile edition, Allport's original work of 1947 under a new title: "The Psychology of Rumor Or How The Flying Saucer Phenomenon Spread Throughout The Nation" following the author's comments to The New York Time reporter. In the early '40s, rumors about World War II began to spread throughout the United States. The U.S. government was worried about the possible dangers of these rumors and the adverse effects that they could have on American society. The U.S.A. entered World War II on December 8, 1941, and to fight rumors dangerous to national security, the U.S. government decided to encourage social scientists to study the phenomenon of rumors. After the war, Allport and Postman published The Psychology of Rumor (1947). This study was a breakthrough in social psychology. Allport and Postman (1947) defined rumors as propositions of faith on specific (or current) topics that pass from person to person, usually by word of mouth, without evidence of their truth. We have republished, as a facsimile edition, Allport's original work of 1947. This book has been formatted from its original version for publication. IMPORTANT, although we have attempted to maintain the integrity of this title accurately, the present reproduction could have minor errors due to the age of the original scanned copy.
