Ruth: Bridges and Boundaries is a literary close reading of the text as a bridge between the anarchic period of the Judges and the monarchic age that begins with the birth of David, as reflected through Ruth’s absorption process within Bethlehemite society. This bridge is constructed from three main axes: the theological perception that human actions have the power to shape and advance reality; the moral-legal perception that the spirit of the law must be privileged over the letter of the law and social conventions; and the principle that the institute of monarchy must be based upon human compassion. The commentary traces the narrative sequence through the paradigm of this three-fold cord, showing how these threads are woven throughout the book. This innovative reading is illustrated with an unprecedented psychological analysis of Ruth as a narrative of transition, using modern psychological theories. This contemporary yet textually faithful literary commentary offers new insight into the inner workings of the text of Ruth as literary masterpiece. Academic yet accessible, this work provides tools for readers of Ruth and the field of biblical narrative in general.

ruth weiss, born in Berlin in 1928 to Austrian-Jewish parents, arrived in San Francisco in 1952 after hitchhiking through the United States. Crowned years later as the “Goddess of the Beat Generation” by San Francisco Chronicle critic Herb Caen, weiss has worked for almost seven decades with a plurality of artistic forms. Despite her extensive poetry career and very active participation in the West Coast buzzing artistic community since the early 1950s, weiss has remained an essentially overlooked figure in poetry history. This neglect might be representative of the overshadowing of female artists within the Beat Generation as “a marginalized group within an always already marginalized bohemia” (Johnson). The volume taps directly into this lacuna by proving the first close study on one of the most prolific members of the so-called Beat Generation. Offering diverse and comprehensive points of entrance into weiss’s oeuvre, the essays in this volume adopt a multidisciplinary approach that attests to the cross-pollination between art forms in postwar counterculture. In addition, the volume also includes shorter, non-academic contributions and previously unpublished archival material. Bringing together scholars, academics and artists from around the world, this volume represents a timely and much-needed response to the increasing interest in weiss’s work in the last decades.

Hybrid spatial installations Ruth Schnell’s work interrogates historical concepts of reality that are now being called into question by apparative perception. In the field of media art, Schnell has made a significant contribution to the understanding of this radical transformation: she has gone beyond the moving image, involved viewers in a participatory manner, and expanded object-like or sculptural art into immersive environments. Deeply inscribed in her artistic approach is the reference to sociopolitical questions and the latest developments in technology. The monograph offers a documentary reappraisal and contextualization of Ruth Schnell’s work since 1983 and provides stimulus for enhancing competence in the field of media. 40 years of media art production open up new paths and dimensions in a singular way Extensive section on the body of work; with prefaces by Peter Weibel and Katharina Gsöllpointner, as well as contributions by Claudia Giannetti, Chris Salter, and Jill Scott Digital link to the artist’s video archive via QR codes

Landshoffs Zitat "I am rediscovered every year, but like Persephone I always return underground" ist dabei wegweisend fur die hier vorgestellten und analysierten Texte.
