Explore English Student’s Coursebook: Stage 3
Collins Explore English is a 6-level course which provides full coverage of the Cambridge Primary English as a Second Language curriculum framework (0057) from 2020. With a magazine-style Student’s Resource Book, comprehensive Student’s Coursebook, and supportive Teacher’s Guide, it offers clear progression within and across levels. The Student’s Coursebook is clearly linked to the Student’s Resource Book, both of which are fully supported in the Teacher’s Guide. It follows the same topic-based structure of units as the Resource Book, and includes a wide range of varied activities and exercises related to the input materials to develop and consolidate learning. The Coursebook is designed to be written into, so activities contain structured spaces for learners to record answers. The activities can be used as classroom tasks, for homework or for assessment purposes. The completed tasks give the teacher an opportunity to check work and give feedback. Learners have a consolidated record of their work and parents can see what kind of activities learners are doing in class. The Student’s Coursebook provides opportunities for the learners to consolidate and apply what they have learnt, and to relate what they are learning both to the environment in which they live and beyond, to other contexts. Much of the learners’ work is conducted in pairs or small groups in line with international best practice. The tasks and activities are designed to be engaging for learners and to support teachers in their assessment of learner progress and achievement. This innovative course has been designed to encourage maximum enjoyment and engagement by young learners, providing them with a fun and colourful Resource Book packed full of texts and illustrations to stimulate language learning. The corresponding Coursebook contains the activities relating to this input material. The Student’s Resource Book and Student’s Coursebook are used together to provide the full learning package for the student. The course takes an integrated skills approach to developing language skills with an emphasis on practical communication. It is designed with interactive learning at its heart and has been created to offer flexibility where this is beneficial while following a consistent approach so the course is easy to deliver. It is fully supported by a comprehensive Teacher’s Guide with detailed lesson plans that provide step-by-step guidance. This series is endorsed by Cambridge Assessment International Education to support the new curriculum framework 0057 from 2020.

Living with Max

Living with Max

Sandy Lewis

Sandy Lewis describes having a child with Down's Syndrome as both the best and the worst thing that ever happened to her. Like all parents, the birth of her son changed her life in miraculous ways, but Max's condition has presented her with a series of additional challenges and anxieties. In Living with Max, Sandy takes us on a remarkable and inspiring journey, from Max's birth to his extraordinary film debut as one of the stars in the hit film Notes on a Scandal. With unflinching honesty, unaffected humour and not a shred of self-pity, Sandy chronicles the highs and lows of bringing up Max: his amazing ability to light up a room with his smile; his energetic exuberance and love of life; together with the struggles she has faced in raising her son in a world that is clearly not as politically correct as we would like to think. As well as offering a humorous and enlightening insight into the world of a family living with Down's Syndrome, this is a wonderfully moving story of a mother's courage and tenacity, and of a little boy you can't fail to love.

Microbiology of Infectious Disease

Microbiology of Infectious Disease

Sandy R. Primrose

Oxford University Press

sidottu
Prior to the advent of rapid DNA sequencing in the late 90s, students were taught in depth about the physiology and ecology of microorganisms. There was a generally good understanding about the biology of each organism and how it interacted with its environment. Since then, the focus of research has shifted towards an analysis of nucleic acid sequences to determine possible cellular biochemistry or phylogeny. A microbial genome can now be sequenced in a matter of hours, and with the help of a panoply of software programmes the inner workings of the organism can be probed in great detail. However, there is now so much detail that the student or researcher tends to lose any sense of the underlying biology of their study organism. Microbiology has almost become a branch of molecular biology, with the biology getting lost in the molecular detail. This novel text reverses that trend by cutting through the molecular information overload and placing the new sequence-derived information in the context of the natural history of the organism in question. Each concise chapter has a fascinating and different story to tell, focussing on one pathogen or group of closely related pathogens and highlighting a particularly interesting and/or unusual feature. The aim is to abstract the relevant molecular and genomic information, and then to show how it provides insights into the biology of the organism as a whole. Microbiology of Infectious Disease is aimed at undergraduates, graduates, and researchers in microbiology, microbial ecology, disease ecology, and related areas. It is intended as a supplemental text for students to provide them with a detailed overview of the biology and natural history of the microorganisms they will routinely encounter and the factors that influence their pathogenicity and infectivity.

Omissions in Tort Law

Omissions in Tort Law

Sandy Steel

Oxford University Press
2024

Tort law draws a fundamental distinction between doing harm and failing to prevent it. Generally, there is no positive duty upon private individuals to prevent harm. However, there are instances in which a failure to prevent harm—an omission—can have legal consequences. Omissions in Tort Law analyses the distinction drawn by tort law and argues that it is not best understood in terms of the distinction between acts and omissions, but in terms of making things worse versus not making things better. It considers when the law will and should impose duties to improve anothers position. It provides novel conceptual analyses of the basic concepts that inform the imposition of positive duties, such as creation of risk, interfering with aid, assuming responsibility, controlling a source of risk, and the normative considerations that underpin them. It considers the ways in which the law differentiates between actively causing harm and failing to protect from harm, and makes recommendations as to how the law could be improved. Exploring the ways in which conceptions of morality intersect with legal obligations, Omissions in Tort Law offers a detailed and nuanced perspective on omissions and positive duties.
Saving Lives

Saving Lives

Sandy Summers; Harry Jacobs Summers

For millions of people worldwide, nurses are the difference between life and death, self-sufficiency and dependency, hope and despair. But a lack of understanding of what nurses really do -- one perpetuated by popular media's portrayal of nurses as simplistic archetypes -- has devalued the profession and contributed to a global shortage that constitutes a public health crisis. Today, the thin ranks of the nursing workforce contribute to countless preventable deaths. This fully updated and expanded edition of Saving Lives highlights the essential roles nurses play in contemporary health care and how this role is marginalized by contemporary culture. Through engaging prose and examples drawn from television, advertising, and news coverage, the authors detail the media's role in reinforcing stereotypes that fuel the nursing shortage and devalue a highly educated sector of the contemporary workforce. Perhaps most important, the authors provide a wealth of ideas to help reinvigorate the nursing field and correct this imbalance. As American health care undergoes its greatest overhaul in decades, the practical role of nurses -- that as autonomous, highly skilled practitioners -- has never been more important. Accordingly, Saving Lives addresses both the sources of, and prescription for, misperceptions surrounding contemporary nursing.
