The Politics of Munificence in the Roman Empire

The Politics of Munificence in the Roman Empire

Arjan Zuiderhoek

Cambridge University Press
2009
sidottu
In the first two centuries AD, the eastern Roman provinces experienced a proliferation of elite public generosity unmatched in their previous or later history. In this study, Arjan Zuiderhoek attempts to answer the question why this should have been so. Focusing on Roman Asia Minor, he argues that the surge in elite public giving was not caused by the weak economic and financial position of the provincial cities, as has often been maintained, but by social and political developments and tensions within the Greek cities created by their integration into the Roman imperial system. As disparities of wealth and power within imperial polis society continued to widen, the exchange of gifts for honours between elite and non-elite citizens proved an excellent political mechanism for deflecting social tensions away from open conflicts towards communal celebrations of shared citizenship and the legitimation of power in the cities.
Survivability and Traffic Grooming in WDM Optical Networks
The advent of fiber optic transmission systems and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) have led to a dramatic increase in the usable bandwidth of single fiber systems. This book provides detailed coverage of survivability (dealing with the risk of losing large volumes of traffic data due to a failure of a node or a single fiber span) and traffic grooming (managing the increased complexity of smaller user requests over high capacity data pipes), both of which are key issues in modern optical networks. A framework is developed to deal with these problems in wide-area networks, where the topology used to service various high-bandwidth (but still small in relation to the capacity of the fiber) systems evolves toward making use of a general mesh. Effective solutions, exploiting complex optimization techniques, and heuristic methods are presented to keep network problems tractable. Newer networking technologies and efficient design methodologies are also described.

Demonetization and the Black Economy

Demonetization and the Black Economy

On 8 November 2016, the prime minister announced the immediate cancellation of all Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denomination notes, wiping out 86 per cent of the currency in circulation. India's well-functioning economy went into a tailspin. This move, it was claimed, was made to wipeout corruption, deter the generation of black money, weed out fake Indian currency notes and curb terrorism. Overnight, people in India realized that the cash intheir pockets had no value. A window of fifty days was granted to 1.3 billion people toconvert theirold notes into new ones. Businesses, especially in the unorganized sectors, came to a grinding halt.Patients in hospitals faced huge problems, farmers had difficulty buying inputs, weddings were scaled down, and fishermen watched their catch rot. Many lost their jobs and could not support their families. A year later, the RBI announced that 99 per cent of the old currency notes had been deposited with it. India continues to grapple with the effects of this move. The black economy has not been dented; counterfeiting and terrorism continue; the credibility of the RBI, banks and currency is damaged, accountability of the parliament and the prime minister has been eroded; and the social divide has widened. There have been many arguments and counter-arguments from both sides, but they have missed the complete picture. Demonetization and the Black Economy, for the first time, lucidly explains the story of demonetization along with its effects onthe economy.

The Chocolate Effect: Healing Miracles of Chocolate and Compassion
There's an unmistakable overlap between what Mayans and Aztecs knew many centuries ago about Xocolatl (show-co-la-til), the cocoa drink that they called the "food of the gods," and what Buddha knew over 2600 years ago about compassion. While the Mesoamericans were convinced about the magical aphrodisiacal powers of the early version of chocolate, Buddha's wisdom revealed the healing miracles of compassion to the world. Mayans and Aztecs were concerned about the limited body while Buddha was after the unlimited soul. Even as the tall claims about the physical benefits of chocolate are under scientific scrutiny, modern psychologists have already built strong evidence in support of compassion's power to heal the soul. Building on this proof, this book takes the miraculous power of compassion to a new level. It offers an alternative way of thinking about suffering associated with different human conditions-from anger, anxiety, fear, sex, sin and depression, to love, marriage, divorce, and suicide. Science and spirituality come together in an uncommon marriage to help unravel the cause of suffering through a fresh perspective. This book proposes a solution that is not only easily and effortlessly accessible at all times but is one that enlightened souls like Jesus, Patanjali, Buddha, Guru Nanak, Mohammed and others prescribed widely. The awareness I was blessed with during a deep meditation in January 2016 offered a new insight about this simple remedy. That's what I share in this book. I am convinced that the path to end suffering can be accessed through a simple and pragmatic shift in the lens through which we witness and experience the material and sensual world. I invite you to join me on this humbling journey with an open mind so that our voyage together can be mutually enriching. All profits from the sale of this book will be used to provide assistance to abandoned and abused children so that they can have a fair chance at life.
50 States of Gray: An Innovative Solution to the Defined Contribution Retirement Crisis
Another retirement crisis is looming as one-third of private-sector, typically poor and unsophisticated workers, probably have little to no pension security. The fifty states have decided to enact reforms, but they are unwilling to assume any liability. Effective reform should ensure a target, guaranteed, inflation/standard-of-living-indexed retirement income through death. The book proposes a four-step reform process that articulates roles, responsibilities, and sequencing of steps to effectively address the looming retirement crisis. Current reform models potentially expose participants to costly, risky, error-prone, and illiquid alternatives, which could transfer wealth from poor citizens to rich asset managers and from short-lived poor and minority citizens to rich and majority populations. Retirement planning presents a wealth of complex challenges associated with saving, investing, and decumulation. To address these challenges, Muralidhar provides an innovative Flex MMM reform model that reflects the goals of numerous stakeholders, including, states, employers, employees, asset managers, and regulators, by showing steps the federal and state governments could take to alleviate the guesswork and insecurity involved in the retirement saving process. Muralidhar also demonstrates that the lynchpin for retirement security globally is an innovative new retirement bond (called SeLFIES ) he has jointly developed with Robert C. Merton that governments could easily issue to achieve multiple goals.

Is Britain becoming a more racist society? Arun Kundnani looks behind the media hysteria to show how multicultural Britain is under attack by government policies and vitriolic press campaigns that play upon fear and encourage racism. Exacerbated by the attacks of 9/11 and 7/7, Kundnani argues that a new form of racism is emerging that is based on a systematic failure to understand the causes of forced migration, global terrorism and social segregation. The result is a climate of hatred, especially against Muslims and asylum seekers. Yet the government presses ahead with flawed policies and anti-terrorist legislation that creates further resentment, alienation and criminalisation. What can be done? This timely and precise analysis is a useful account of why racism is now thriving - and what we can do to stop it.

Innovations in Pension Fund Management

Innovations in Pension Fund Management

Arun S. Muralidhar

Stanford University Press
2002
sidottu
Whether you are a pension plan sponsor rethinking investment objectives or conducting an asset allocation study, an investor interested in evaluating asset-liability value-at-risk, or an investor who wants the latest techniques to evaluate investment management skills, Innovations in Pension Fund Management gives state-of-the-art guidance on how to implement investment strategy with cutting-edge financial theory and current best practices of plan sponsors and investment managers. All aspects of fund management will be seen in a fresh light, as professionals read about current practical and theoretical twists and turns in asset allocation, risk management, and performance evaluation and implementation. For example, they will understand why asset liability management decision-making must be fully integrated; have a framework for the use of derivatives in their fund and recognize the benefits of leverage; study unique insights on how to measure risk and techniques to manage it; and learn why plan sponsors worldwide are evaluating the M3 measure and the "luck or skill" measure as a result of research cited here. These are only a few reasons why Innovations in Pension Fund Management is a must-read for any plan sponsor, investor, academic researcher, or student of the field who wants concepts explained non-technically, primarily by reliance on case studies. Readers who want coverage of analytic foundations are referred to appropriate technical appendices within the book. The author also looks at advances in human financial resource management, and management control through performance attribution, performance evaluation, and peer comparison. In short, he describes how the management process of planning, implementing, staffing, and control applies to employees within a wide spectrum of financial institutions, including private and government pension systems, endowments, life and casualty insurance programs, and central banks.
Managing Hurricane Katrina

Managing Hurricane Katrina

Louisiana State University Press

The government's response to Hurricane Katrina, one of the most devastating natural disasters in U.S. history, suffered numerous criticisms. Nearly every assessment pointed to failure, from evaluations of President George W. Bush, FEMA, and the Department of Homeland Security to the state of Louisiana and the city administration of New Orleans. In Managing Hurricane Katrina: Lessons from a Megacrisis, Arjen Boin, Christer Brown, and James A. Richardson deliver a more nuanced examination of the storm's aftermath than the ones anchored in public memory, and identify aspects of management that offer more positive examples of leadership than bureaucratic and media reports indicated. Katrina may be the most extensively studied disaster to date, but the authors argue that many academic conclusions are inaccurate or contradictory when examined in concert. Drawing on insights from crisis and disaster management studies, Boin, Brown, and Richardson apply a clear framework to objectively analyze the actions of various officials and organizations during and after Katrina. They specify critical factors that determine the successes and failures of a societal response to catastrophes and demonstrate how to utilize their framework in future superdisasters. Going beyond previous assessments, Managing Hurricane Katrina reconsiders the role of government in both preparing for a megacrisis and building an effective response network at a time when citizens need it most.

Psychedelic White

University of Minnesota Press

A bold new approach to racial difference conceived through rave tourism The village of Anjuna, located in the coastal Indian state of Goa, has been one of the premier destinations on the global rave scene for nearly two decades. The birthplace of Goa trance, the most psychedelic variety of electronic dance music, Anjuna first attracted adventurous Westerners in the 1970s who were drawn there by its tropical beaches, tolerant locals, and readily available drugs. Today, rave tourists travel to Goa to take part in round-the-clock dance parties and lose themselves in the crowds, the music, and the drugs. But do they really escape where they come from and who they are? A rich and theoretically sophisticated ethnography, Psychedelic White explains how race plays out in Goa’s white counterculture and grapples with how to make sense of racism when it is not supposed to be there. Goa is a site of particularly revealing forms of interracial collision, and contrary to author Arun Saldanha’s expectations that the nature of rave would create an inclusive atmosphere, he repeatedly witnessed stark segregation between white and Indian tourists. He came to understand race in its creative dimension as a shifting and fuzzy assemblage of practices, environments, sounds, and substances-dance skills, sunlight, conversation, cannabis, and tea. In doing so, his work shows how the rave scene in Goa harbors conflicting tendencies regarding race. The complicated intersection of cultures and phenotypes, Saldanha asserts, helps to consolidate whiteness. Race emerges not through rigid boundaries but rather through what he terms viscosity, the degree to which bodies gather together for pleasure and self-transformation. Challenging the prevailing conception of racial difference as a purely social construction and offering building on the works of Gilles Deleuze and FÉlix Guattari, Psychedelic White presents nothing less than a new materialist approach to race.
