Arthur Ashe explains how this iconic African American tennis player overcame racial and class barriers to reach the top of the tennis world in the 1960s and 1970s. But more important, it follows Ashe's evolution as an activist who had to contend with the shift from civil rights to Black Power. Off the court, and in the arena of international politics, Ashe positioned himself at the center of the black freedom movement, negotiating the poles of black nationalism and assimilation into white society. Fiercely independent and protective of his public image, he navigated the thin line between conservatives and liberals, reactionaries and radicals, the sports establishment and the black cause. Eric Allen Hall's work examines Ashe's life as a struggle against adversity but also a negotiation between the comforts-perhaps requirements-of tennis-star status and the felt obligation to protest the discriminatory barriers the white world constructed to keep black people "in their place." The first monograph on Arthur Elrod, design king of the desert in the 1950s, '60s, and '70s. Arthur Elrod was the most successful interior designer working in the Palm Springs area from 1954 to 1974. His forward-thinking midcentury interior design appeared in primary homes, second houses, third houses, spec houses, country clubs, and experimental houses--in the desert and across the US. He was charming, handsome, and worked tirelessly for his A-list clientele, persuading them to spend just as much money on their vacation homes as their primary residence. Perhaps his most famous work was done in his own home, known as The Elrod House in Palm Springs, built by architect John Lautner in 1968. His rise paralleled the growing modernist movement in desert architecture, and he worked alongside the leading California architects of the day including E. Stewart Williams, William F. Cody, Paul R. Williams, Buff & Hensman, A. Quincy Jones, Wexler & Harrison, Palmer & Krisel, Howard Lapham, Richard Dorman, Edward Fickett and, most famously, John Lautner. Elrod's life was cut tragically short when his Fiat convertible was hit by a drunk driver one morning in February 1974; he was 49. This in-depth biography of the midcentury's wunderkind interior designer, Arthur Elrod, is the first and only of its kind. Adele Cygelman is a longtime writer and editor who has covered interior design, architecture, and real estate for numerous magazines, including Architectural Digest and Robb Report.
