This is the only book that presents the full story of the epidemic and the failed attempt to eradicate the disease from Florida.Florida declared war on citrus canker, a bacterial disease, and spent 1.3 billion dollars and destroyed 16.5 million trees, between 1995 to 2006. In the end, the disease won. It is still present in Florida. The book describes the prior attempts at eradication, the opposition to the program and legal issues. Finally, the epidemiology research leading to the implementation of a highly aggressive program (1900-ft policy) where every citrus tree within 1900-ft of an infected tree, is thoroughly reviewed. It is determined that the Florida Department of Agriculture mislead the residents of Florida into believing that the program was based on a field study in Miami-Dade County, Florida. It was not true and the true origins of the 1900-ft policy are revealed in this book. The "Pieces of the Puzzle" come together at the end, with a new explanation of the origins of the 1900-ft policy and the pattern of the outbreak as it developed.

Few know what it's like to go from a childhood in the bayous of Louisiana in the 1930s, obtaining their secondary education from Louisiana Negro Normal and Industrial Institute, to being an Olympian, to finally becoming an Ambassador for the United States of America. However Ambassador David Bolen is one who knows all about such matters because he lived each of these as well as so many more. From his time as the fastest American amateur collegiate athlete in the country, to a thirty year career in Foreign Service with the State Department and beyond, Ambassador Bolen writes about many incidents that not only illuminate recent history, but that also underscore the way to get the most from one's life. In a time of a very strong entitlement mindset, the story of Ambassador Bolen is one that not only inspires, but also lets the reader know that the proper mindset, coupled with drive and determination, can get the reader anywhere they want to go in life. If it can happen for a man who was born in the disadvantaged South during a time of deep discrimination, then it can happen for anyone of us. This inspiring and entertaining story is memoir of a man who knew the harsh realities of discrimination at a time when it was a daily accepted aspect of life, yet went on to live a life beyond his wildest imagination. Now at 93 and still going strong, he's someone who continues to embolden those around him.

How the autonomous digital forces jolting our lives - as uncontrollable as the weather and plate tectonics - are transforming life, society, culture, and politics.David Auerbach's exploration of the phenomenon he has identified as the meganet begins with a simple, startling revelation: There is no hand on the tiller of some of the largest global digital forces that influence our daily lives: from corporate sites such as Facebook, Amazon, Google, YouTube, Instagram, and Reddit to the burgeoning metaverse encompassing cryptocurrencies and online gaming to government systems such as China's Social Credit System and India's Aadhaar. As we increasingly integrate our society, culture and politics within a hyper-networked fabric, Auerbach explains how the interactions of billions of people with unfathomably large online networks have produced a new sort of beast: ever-changing systems that operate beyond the control of the individuals, companies, and governments that created them.Meganets, Auerbach explains, have a life of their own, actively resisting attempts to control them as they accumulate data and produce spontaneous, unexpected social groups and uprisings that could not have even existed twenty years ago. And they constantly modify themselves in response to user behavior, resulting in collectively authored algorithms none of us intend or control. These enormous invisible organisms exerting great force on our lives are the new minds of the world, increasingly commandeering our daily lives and inner realities.Auerbach's analysis of these gargantuan opaque digital forces yield important insights such as:- The conventional wisdom that the Googles and Facebook of this world are tightly run algorithmic entities is a myth. No one is really in control.- The efforts at reform - to get lies and misinformation off meganets - run into a brick wall because the companies and executives who run them are trapped by the persistent, evolving, and opaque systems they have created.- Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are uncontrollable and their embrace by elite financial institutions threatens the entire economy- We are asking the wrong questions in assuming that if only the Facebooks of this world could be better regulated or broken up that they would be better, more ethical citizens- Why questions such as making algorithms fair and bias-free and whether AI can be a tool for good or evil are wrong and misinformedAuerbach then comes full circle, showing that while we cannot ultimately control meganets we can tame them through the counterintuitive measures he describes in detail.

James Innes Watson, the great-great-grandson of Dr. John H. Watson, has inherited all the manuscripts of his forebear. These include stories that, for whatever reason, Watson never came to publish. In this collection, "The Case of Ailsa Craig," Holmes is summoned by an old university friend to a bleak island off the coast of Scotland. A lighthouse keeper has disappeared in apparent supernatural circumstances. "The Amateur Cracksman," Scotland Yard approaches Holmes regarding a high society cracksman. It is only when Mycroft Holmes enters the investigation with a robbery of radio inventor Marconi that the case is solved. "Sherlock Holmes in Cumbria," Holmes and Watson travel to the English Lake District to solve a murder case on the mountains. A second murder on the peak of one of England's highest mountains, and then a theft from a family from Holmes's past make up this north-country case.

Farley, cofounders of Radiant Pain Relief Centres, present a revolutionary pain-management method that doesn't include drugs, needles, surgery, or side effects. There can be a better future for chronic pain management. This is the book that will help make that possible.
