Tidworth was an ancient village in a wooded valley on the edge of Salisbury Plain. For long centuries it had remained a rural settlement of farms and cottages, half in Hampshire, half in Wiltshire, with life revolving round the manors, especially the fine Palladian mansion and estate of Tedworth House. Then, in 1901, the Army arrived. Within a few short years the place had undergone one of the most dramatic transformations to become the second largest military garrison in the country and known to countless thousands of soldiers who were stationed there.
New Dictionary of Christian ethics & pastoral theology

New Dictionary of Christian ethics & pastoral theology

David J Atkinson O'Donovan

INTER-VARSITY PRESS

sidottu
This dictionary breaks new ground by combining articles on Christian ethics and pastoral theology in one volume. It seeks to integrate moral, pastoral and practical theology in a way not attempted before in a single work of reference. Instead of the usual A-Z listing throughout, it is arranged in two parts. Part One consists of eighteen extended articles, arranged in theological order, introducing users to the main themes of Christian ethics and pastoral theology. Part Two contains articles, alphabetically arranged, which stem from the main themes. An easy-to-use reference system enables quick transition from the first to the second part and vice versa. Articles address a wide range of topics: reproductive technologies and transplant surgery, health and health care; issues of economic and social justice; prison and prison reform; psychotherapy and family therapy; business ethics and data protection; as well as such traditional subjects as atonement, the kingdom of God, suffering, death and dying, and heaven and hell. This dictionary will therefore appeal to many groups: pastors, counsellors, medical practitioners, people employed in the caring services, Christians in professional or commercial life, and indeed to all who want to live out their faith meaningfully and ethically in today's complex and challenging world. Its spacious layout, superb design and clear print make this volume a delight to use, and its carefully drawn-up bibliographies will help readers to deepen their knowledge of particular subject.
Queer

Queer

Part of the acclaimed 'Documents of Contemporary Art' series of anthologies. There has never been an anthology of artists' writings like Queer. It is an antidote to assimilation, a call for radical creativity, and a recipe for artistic revolution. - Richard Meyer, Professor, Department of Art & Art History, Stanford University Rather than a book of queer theory for artists, this is a book of artists’ queer tactics and infectious concepts. In the first such anthology to be centred on artists’ writings, numerous conversations about queer practice are brought together from diverse individual, social and cultural contexts. Together these texts describe and examine the ways in which artists have used the concept of queer as a site of political and institutional critique, as a framework to develop new families and histories, as a spur to action, and as a basis from which to declare inassimilable difference. Artists surveyed include: Nayland Blake, Gregg Bordowitz, Leigh Bowery, AA Bronson, AK Burns, Giuseppe Campuzano, Tee Corinne, Barbara DeGenevieve, Dyke Action Machine!, Elmgreen & Dragset, Nicole Eisenman, Rotimi Fani-Kayode, Simon Fujiwara, Malik Gaines, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Gran Fury, Sunil Gupta, Hahn Thi Pham, Harmony Hammond, Sharon Hayes, Hudson, Roberto Jacoby, Derek Jarman, Isaac Julien, Mahmoud Khaled, Zoe Leonard, Lesbian Avengers, Catherine Lord, Ma Liuming, LTTR, Allyson Mitchell, Zanele Muholi, Carlos Motta, Ocaña, Hélio Oiticica, Catherine Opie, Marlon Riggs, Emily Roysdon, Prem Sahib, Assoto Saint, Tejal Shah, Amy Sillman, Jack Smith, AL Steiner, Wolfgang Tillmans, Toxic Titties, Danh Vo, David Wojnarowicz, Wu Tsang, Yan Xing, Las Yeguas del Apocalipsis, Akram Zaatari and Sergio Zevallos

Strategic Public Private Partnerships

David J. Maurrasse

This timely book addresses contemporary and future dynamics of collaboration, combining public, private, and nongovernmental resources at a time when global concerns - ranging from economic insecurity to environmental threats to chronic diseases - cannot be solved by single sectors.David Maurrasse reveals that government alone cannot adequately address the myriad challenges of our complex times. Therefore, while the idea of collaboration is increasingly popular, such efforts are difficult to implement. The author expertly analyzes the strengths, weaknesses, and potential of cross sector partnerships, transcending the public/private paradigm by integrating the social sector into its framework. A number of diverse case studies from across the globe are presented alongside strategies, opportunities and future challenges for strengthening partnerships. This book captures current thinking and approaches to partnerships leveraging the public, private, and social sectors to address pressing contemporary issues and stimulate innovation. As such, it will prove an invaluable reference tool for not only academics, students and researchers in the fields of public sector economics, public policy and business and management, but also for practitioners and policymakers involved in the review of specific manifestations of cross sector partnerships.Contents: Introduction Part I: The Concept of Strategic Cross Sector Partnerships 1. British Privateering Enterprise in the Eighteenth Century

British Privateering Enterprise in the Eighteenth Century

David J. Starkey

University of Exeter Press

An important part of eighteenth-century maritime conflict involved the destruction of enemy commerce and the protection of home trade. In performing these tasks, state navies were augmented by privateers, vessels owned, equipped and manned by private individuals authorised by their governments to attack and seize the enemy’s seabourne property. For their reward, the investors and seafarers engaged in privateering ventures shared in the proceeds of any ships and goods taken and condemned as lawful prize. Privateering therefore represented a business opportunity to the maritime community, a chance to acquire instant wealth at the enemy’s expense; at the same time, it appeared as a cheap convenient means by which the state might supplement its naval strength. In this important analysis David J. Starkey draws upon a wealth of documentary evidence to throw fresh light upon the character, scale and significance of the British privateering business.

In Bosnia, the Middle East, Haiti, and other situations central to the U.S. post-Cold War foreign policy, success or failure has turned on America's ability to promote hope and opportunity as the by-products of intervention. In the wake of war, violence, and civil unrest, providing jobs, homes, basic services, and capital has been the strategy for subduing opposition and building political will as U.S. and allied troops wind down their limited missions. At the same time, dwindling aid budgets, differences with other donors, institutional gaps, congressional opposition, and conflicting objectives have compromised the effectiveness of economic recovery programs worldwide. This book is built around a detailed analysis of U.S. efforts in Bosnia-Herzegovina, in the Palestinian Territories, and in the Republic of Haiti. It assesses the effectiveness of U.S. strategic planning and the implementation of American economic plans in each of these situations, identifying areas where new approaches and programs may be needed to enhance the likelihood of success in the future. With the resolution of regional conflicts looming as an increasingly important component of U.S. foreign policy and the concurrent unwillingness to expose U.S. forces to prolonged risk in these situations, post-conflict initiatives will prove to be more important than ever before. This book offers crucial insights into the challenges of promoting stability through the restoration of hope and opportunity to the victims of crises and provides a forward-looking assessment of the future demands and opportunities created in conjunction with the economic dimensions of peacekeeping.

Environmental Careers presents a broad-based, yet concise survey of employment opportunities in the environmental field. Environmental Careers includes opportunities in natural resources management, environmental protection, environmental health and safety, environmental education, allied environmental careers, and non-degree technical careers. Important issues for students, guidance counselors, and mid-career changers, such as salaries, characteristics of employers, and the latest trends in demands for environmental professionals, are addressed. The book also presents the 10 best career prospects for the 1990s and offers guidance on developing and implementing a personal action plan for pursuing an environmental career.

David J. Wolpe

We are taught to study, to learn, and to let ourselves grow Jewishly. But where does being the "people of the book" get us in the real world?David Wolpe's collection of essays responds to this question by exploring how Jewish values, such as scholarship and compassion, together with Jewish practice, enhance an individual's private and public life. How does Shabbat help deflect us from the pressures of the societal rat-race? How can Jewish learning subdue political unrest? Rabbi Wolpe draws the lessons of this collection from a variety of religious and historical sources, finding the importance of Israel in a Robert Frost poem, the nature of God in the words of Beowulf, and parenting lessons in the fatherly techniques of King David. The essays address diverse topics ranging from assimilation to Zionism to Jewish concepts of life and death.Rabbi Wolpe asks the questions, sometimes profound, sometimes light-hearted, that challenge us to consider how we live as Jews, how our Jewish lives are influenced by our secular surroundings, and how we can develop our Jewish souls by continuing to learn from new sources while remaining open to spiritual growth. Some of these questions include:Is it wrong to admire Kant, Voltaire, and Roald Dahl if they were anti-Semitic?How can we reconcile our American family traditions with our Jewish family traditions? In an evolutionary debate, do God and Steven Pinker stand behind opposite podiums?Do we need such a thing as a Jewish home? A Jewish homeland? Why does Walt Whitman think we should stay awake during the rabbi's sermon? What lessons of aging gracefully can we learn from Rabbi Akiba and Grandma Moses? An ideal gift for teachers, Confirmation students, grads, and new families that join the congregation.

Pipeline

What would it look like if your church really took the last words of Jesus seriously? The Great Commission was not just a suggestion by our Lord, but an imperative mandate given to his followers. Missionary sending agencies are deploying workers to the field, but many of them come from disengaged churches that are not producing well-equipped disciples. We need a fully integrated global supply chain--a pipeline--that has disciples as the precious commodity, as well as an effective infrastructure to distribute and replicate them around the globe. Pipeline seeks to re-engage the church in mobilizing the next generation of workers for the harvest. This is a collaboration of forty different authors from churches, agencies, and cross-cultural servants. As people in distant places wait for a messenger of hope and salvation, will your church venture into the pipeline?

Those who have come to expect expert analysis of contextualization from David Hesselgrave will not be disappointed with this work. "His expertise," writes George Peters, "shines through in this book." Teaming up with Hesselgrave is Ed Rommen, who, according to Peters, is "becoming an authority in practical contextualization." Together they skillfully bring the labyrinth of meanings, proposals, and tasks of contextualization into clearer focus. The result, says Peters, "is the most comprehensive treatise on the subject produced by evangelical scholars."

His "classroom" has been the beautiful natural bowl of Clemens Stadium. His college teams have won 471 games, 63 more than those of his closest rival.
