Beeronomics

From prompting a transition from hunter-gatherer to an agrarian lifestyle in ancient Mesopotamia to bankrolling Britain's imperialist conquests, strategic taxation and the regulation of beer has played a pivotal role throughout history. Beeronomics: How Beer Explains the World tells these stories, and many others, whilst also exploring the key innovations that propelled the industrialization and consolidation of the beer market. At the same time when mega-mergers in the brewing industry are creating huge transnationals selling their beer across the globe, the craft beer movement in America and Europe has brought the rich history of ancient brewing techniques to the forefront in recent years. But less talked about is the economic influence of this beverage on the world and the myriad ways it has shaped the course of history. Beeronomics covers world history through the lens of beer, exploring the common role that beer taxation has played throughout and providing context for recognizable brands and consumer trends and tastes. Beeronomics examines key developments that have moved the brewing industry forward. Its most ubiquitous ingredient, hops, was used by the Hanseatic League to establish the export dominance of Hamburg and Bremen in the sixteenth century. During the late nineteenth century, bottom-fermentation led to the spread of industrial lager beer. Industrial innovations in bottling, refrigeration, and TV advertising paved the way for the consolidation and market dominance of major macrobreweries like Anheuser Busch in America and Artois Brewery in Belgium during the twentieth century. We're now in the era of global integration-- one multinational AB InBev, claims 46% of all beer profits-- but there's a counterrevolution afoot of small, independent craft breweries in both America, Belgium and around the world. Beeronomics surveys these trends, giving context to why you see which brands and styles on shelves at your local supermarket or on tap at the nearby pub.

With the nuclearization of the Indian subcontinent, Indo-Pakistani crisis behavior has acquired a deadly significance. The past two decades have witnessed no fewer than six crises against the backdrop of a vigorous nuclear arms race. Except for the Kargil war of 1998-9, all these events were resolved peacefully.Nuclear war was avoided despite bitter mistrust, everyday tensions, an intractable political conflict over Kashmir, three wars, and the steady refinement of each side's nuclear capabilities. Sumit Ganguly and Devin T. Hagerty carefully analyze each crisis, reviewing the Indian and Pakistani domestic political systems and key decisions during the relevant period. This lucid and comprehensive study of the two nations' crisis behavior in the nuclear age is the first work on Indo-Pakistani relations to take systematic account of the role played by the United States in South Asia's security dynamics over the past two decades in the context of unipolarization, and formulates a blueprint for American policy toward a more positive and productive India-Pakistan relationship.

Experience the riveting, dystopian Uglies series seen as never before--through the eyes of Shay, Tally Youngblood's closest and bravest friend, who refuses to take anything about society at face value. "From the moment we are born, we are considered threats in need of 'special' management. We are watched and shaped and exploited by a force most of us never see. . . . All to keep us safe. . . . Do you feel safe? Or do you feel like you're in a cage?"--Shay In Pretties, Tally Youngblood and her daring best friend, Shay, both underwent the operation that turned them from ordinary Uglies into stunning beauties. Now this thrilling new graphic novel reveals Shay's perspective on living in New Pretty Town . . . and the way she sees it, there's more to this so-called paradise than meets the eye. With the endless parties and custom-made clothes, life as a Pretty should be perfect. Yet Shay doesn't feel quite right. She has little to no memory of her past; it's as if something in her brain has inexplicably changed. When she reunites with Tally and the Crims--her rebellious group of friends from Uglyville--she begins to recall their last departure to the wild, and the headstrong leader she used to be. And as she remembers the truth about what doomed their escape, Shay decides to fight back--against the status quo, against the mysterious Special Circumstances, even against her own best friend.
The Soul of Design

The Soul of Design

Robert Austin; Lee Devin

Stanford University Press

What makes the Apple iPhone cool? Bang & Olufsen and Samsung's televisions beautiful? Any of a wide variety of products and services special? The answer is not simply functionality or technology, for competitors' products are often as good. The Soul of Design explores the uncanny power of some products to grab and hold attention—to create desire. To understand what sets a product apart in this way, authors Lee Devin and Robert Austin push past personal taste and individual response to adopt a more conceptual approach. They carefully explore the hypothesis that there is something within a "special" product that makes it—well, special. They argue that this je ne sais quoi arises from "plot"—the shape that emerges as a product or service arouses and then fulfills expectations. Marketing a special product is, then, a matter of helping its audience perceive its plot and comprehend its qualities. Devin and Austin provide keys to understanding why some products and services stand out in a crowd and how the companies that make them create these hits. Part One of the book introduces the authors' definition of plot in this context; Part Two breaks down the components needed to build a plot; Part Three describes what makes a plot coherent; Part Four takes on the challenges of making coherent products and services attractive to consumers. Part Four also presents detailed casework, which shows how innovators and makers have successfully brought special products to market. Readers will come away with a sensible and clear approach to conceiving of artful products and services. This book will help managers and designers think about engaging with plot, taking aesthetic factors into account to provide consumers with more special things.
When Computers Go to School

Kent School's experience suggests that information technology can be used to enrich teaching and learning for both faculty and students. Some argue that computer technology can facilitate learning by enhancing students' ability to experiment, practice, and experience the real world. Others feel that spending money on such technology is not worth it. In 1996, Kent School embarked on a program to integrate information technology into teaching and learning. Data about participants' use of the technology were gathered through surveys, interviews, and focus groups during academic years 19981999 and 20002001. The report summarizes the experiences of Kent School's faculty and students with the technology.

The Witching Stones

The Witching Stones

Crystals are displayed prominently at virtually every witchcraft and metaphysical store; however, a comprehensive guide to their use in magic has been a missing element. Nicholas Pearson helps to remedy this with The Witching Stones, examining crystals, gems, and humble stones with the most ancient and powerful connections to magic. These magical stones number fourteen in all: flint, hagstone, ammonite, fossil urchin, salt, lodestone, lead, toadstone, amber, jet, cross-stone, quartz, moonstone, and emerald. Pearson explores the historical usage of these stones, as well as why they are associated with witchcraft, but also offers practical and accessible uses for the modern practitioner in the form of spells and rituals. He describes more than fifty spells, rituals, and recipes, from the basics of cleansing and consecrating your stones, to more advanced techniques like crafting lead curse tablets, blending incense and oils, and working lunar magic with moonstones. Inspired by The Witching Herbs—Harold Roth’s in-depth examination of thirteen plants powerfully associated with witchcraft—The Witching Stones focuses on the geology, history, and practical use of crystals and stones in magic. This book is an excellent how-to guide to the magical use of stones and crystals, suitable for beginners who don’t know what to “do” with crystals, as well as for the experienced crystal lover who seeks to take their practice to the next level. While many spell books feature the use of crystals within them, this is the first book to dive deep into the topic, exploring the mineral kingdom in the context of alchemy, talismanic magic, and Luciferian witchcraft.

Woman from all walks of life share their experiences and the lessons they've learned about fibromyalgia, from a single student pondering the impact of FM on her future to the mother trying to find the energy to care for her children.
