The Man Who Walked Out of the Sun

The Man Who Walked Out of the Sun

Duncan Hamilton

Little, Brown Book Group

sidottu
A biography of Garry Sobers, who turns 90 in 2026 and personifies the greatest of West Indian cricket At the end of the 1960s, Garry Sobers became the highest profile beneficiary of English cricket's decision to rid itself of the qualification rule about hiring overseas glamour. He picked Nottinghamshire, a side mediocre for so long that it was stranded on the margins of the Championship. In that first memorable summer Sobers so successfully sparked the revival of a moribund club that it acquired the sobriquet 'Sobers-shire'. Duncan Hamilton fell in love with cricket because he first fell in love with Sobers. He counts himself as 'blessed' to have lived only a shilling bus ride from Trent Bridge during the years Sobers played there. The Man Who Walked Out of the Sun is both Hamilton's remembrance of those times and a study of Sobers' career, tracking the rise and dominance of the world's first 'jet age' cricketer. The barest of Sobers' statistics prove that every superlative ever used about his brilliance is justified, but Hamilton considers them less important than the sense of wonder he inspired, the emotion he stirred, the elan with which he played, the abundant beauty in almost everything he did.
Risk-Led Safety: Evidence-Driven Management, Second Edition

On Educational Leadership as Emancipatory Practice
As a critical reflection on education and educational leadership today, this book makes use of the ideas of some of the major thinkers of our time—Adorno, Arendt, Biesta, Brown, Apple, Hall, Marx, Nietzsche, Rancière, Said, Williams, and others—in an examination of the emancipatory potential of education. Author Duncan Waite explores the political, social, systemic, epistemological, and cultural barriers and roadblocks that inhibit liberatory education, discussing the concepts of corruption and abuse of power; systems and structures that hobble us; ideologies such as neoliberalism, capitalism, and corporatism; identity and consciousness; and conceptions of learning, growth, and development. Ultimately the author unpacks how these issues relate to liberation, emancipation, and social justice for students, teachers, and educational leaders, as well as the role leadership can play in realizing the emancipatory promise of education.

This second edition of the successful Foundations on Rock presents an up-to-date practical reference book describing current engineering practice in the investigation, design and construction of foundations on rock. An extra chapter on Tension Foundations has been included. The methods set out are readily applicable to high rise buildings, bridges, dams and structures subject to uplift and turning loads.Foundations on Rock differs from the many texts and handbooks on soil foundations in that it focuses on the effect of geology on the stability and settlement of rock foundations. While the intact rock may be strong, defects in the rock such as faults, joints and cavities, and the deterioration of the rock with time, will have a significant effect on foundation performance. Methods of detecting such defects are described, and their implications for foundation design and treatment are elaborated.

In 1909 the Scottish archaeologist Duncan Mackenzie, Sir Arthur Evans’s right-hand man on the excavations of the legendary ‘Palace of Minos’ at Knossos since 1900, was appointed ‘Explorer’ of the Palestine Exploration Fund (PEF). From the spring of 1910 until December 1912 he was engaged in archaeological fieldwork in Palestine, especially directing excavation campaigns at Ain Shems (biblical Beth Shemesh) – an important site in the Shephelah of Judah at the crossroads of Canaanite, Philistine, and Israelite cultures. Mackenzie published the results of his work in various issues of the Palestine Exploration Quarterly and Palestine Exploration Fund Annual. Because of a financial dispute with the PEF, however, he never submitted a detailed publication of his very last campaign at Beth Shemesh, conducted in November–December 1912.In 1992 Nicoletta Momigliano rediscovered Mackenzie’s lost manuscript on his latest discoveries at Beth Shemesh, which one of his nephews had kept for nearly 80 years at his old family home in the Scottish Highlands, in the small village of Muir of Ord. At about the same time, Shlomo Bunimovitz and Zvi Lederman initiated new excavations at Beth Shemesh which considerably changed previous interpretations of the site. This volume presents Mackenzie’s detailed discussion of his last excavations at Beth Shemesh in the light of these more recent discoveries. Although written over a century ago, Mackenzie’s manuscript deserves to be better known today; it not only provides significant new information on this important site but also constitutes an intriguing historical document, shedding light on the history of field archaeology and of biblical archaeology. Moreover, Mackenzie’s pioneering approach to archaeological fieldwork and the significance of his finds can often be better appreciated today, from the perspective of more recent developments and discoveries.
Precinct, Temple and Altar in Roman Spain
The studies included in this volume supplement the work already published by the author on the imperial cult in the Roman West, focussing on the monuments of two cities in Roman Spain, Augusta Emerita (now Mérida) and Tarraco (now Tarragona). The introduction gives the general background and context of the four following studies and argues in favour of proactive initiative from the centre. The core of the book is a study of the provincial forum at Augusta Emerita. It opens with a historiographic survey followed by discussion of the plaza (location, portico, "Arco de Trajano"), then surveys other structures and their general architectonic significance. Discussion of the hexastyle temple at the centre of the precinct considers its date of construction and the influence of the provincial governor, L. Fulcinius Trio, in copying the Aedes Concordiae at Rome. Two long sections assigned to analysis of inscriptions and the significance of the provincial centre of Lusitania complete the study.Discussion of the "Temple of Augustus" in Tarragona, in Chapter 3, begins with a historiography of the temple followed by an account of its discovery by ground-probing radar and electric resistivity tomography. After arguing that the temple was provincial ab initio - rather than first municipal then provincial - discussion moves to present opinion on the successive stages of the construction and design of the temple with a final chapter on the significance of the Temple of Hispania Citerior. Two final studies consider the numismatic evidence for an Ara Providentiae at Augusta Emerita, its counterpart in Rome, and the inferred presence of a templum minus at Augusta Emerita with its enigmatic portrayal of Agrippa at sacrifice fifty years after his death. As for the location of this copy of a Roman prototype, analysis focuses on the evidence for a supposed temple in the forum adiectum of the colonial forum and considers the iconographic recomposition of

Binary Quadratic Forms

The first coherent exposition of the theory of binary quadratic forms was given by Gauss in the Disqnisitiones Arithmeticae. During the nine teenth century, as the theory of ideals and the rudiments of algebraic number theory were developed, it became clear that this theory of bi nary quadratic forms, so elementary and computationally explicit, was indeed just a special case of a much more elega,nt and abstract theory which, unfortunately, is not computationally explicit. In recent years the original theory has been laid aside. Gauss's proofs, which involved brute force computations that can be done in what is essentially a two dimensional vector space, have been dropped in favor of n-dimensional arguments which prove the general theorems of algebraic number the ory. In consequence, this elegant, yet pleasantly simple, theory has been neglected even as some of its results have become extremely useful in certain computations. I find this neglect unfortunate, because binary quadraticforms have two distinct attractions. First, the subject involves explicit computa tion and many of the computer programs can be quite simple. The use of computers in experimenting with examples is both meaningful and enjoyable; one can actually discover interesting results by com puting examples, noticing patterns in the "data," and then proving that the patterns result from the conclusion of some provable theorem.

Using the prize money from his Somerset Maugham Award, Duncan McLean traveled from Orkney, Scotland, to Texas in search of the extraordinary mix of jazz, blues, country, and mariachi that is Western Swing. This account of his travels takes in barbed-wire museums, onion festivals, hoe-downs, ghost-towns, dead dogs, and ten thousand miles of driving through the Lone Star State. A constant soundtrack of vintage music from bands like the Texas Top Hands, The Lightcrust Doughboys, and the Modern Mountaineers cheers McLean as he tries, with great difficulty, to track down any trace of his greatest heroes: Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. Both a quest for a musical grail and a wildly funny travelogue, Lone Star Swing captures the singular wonders of Texas and its maverick inhabitants, its staggering 100-in-the-shade heat, its mouth-blistering chilies. . . . Above all it captures the spirit of the glorious mongrel music-once incredibly popular, now all but forgotten-that he crossed the world to hear.

In this extraordinary collection of short stories, Duncan McLean shows us real life -- and real death -- in all its many guises. Equally adept at black farce, brutal rants, or tender epiphanies, McLean plunges us headlong into the lives of his characters: partying, and all it entails, with soccer enthusiasts; shivering inside the butcher's man-sized fridge; stumbling bloody-footed along the cliff-top path at midnight, lost in a liver'n'onions-fueled fantasy of sex and violence. The men and women in these stories are mostly unemployed or in dead-end jobs, often on the edge of madness or destruction; but just as often they are on the brink of simply leaving: walking away from relationships, responsibilities, and the reassurance of alcohol and aggression. Told with enormous skill, fierce humor, and a dark emotional drive, these stories are as various as the characters themselves. Their commonality derives from a merciless realism, and an almost fanatical adherence to the rhythms and cadences of spoken language. McLean wants to capture the unremarkable, but it is his remarkable stories which transport. Expressed here at last is a psychic disorder, so contemporary, so unsafe; here is swaggering, sneering, frustrated, self-scepticism on the pavement. -- Guardian (London) Winner of the Somerset Maugham Award

Duncan McLean has been called "Scotland's answer to Roddy Doyle" (Cosmopolitan), but he has his own unique, scruffy voice full of quirky humor and surreal images. In the highland town of Blackden, things have gotten overheated despite being overtaken by the chill of winter. Inside the head of eighteen-year-old Patrick Hunter, an auctioneer's assistant, the blood is boiling. Fueled by a potent mix of yankee doodle pie and beer, Patrick spends a November weekend on his own when his off-balanced mother goes to the city. Racing around the hills and dens of his hometown, he is half in escape from worn-out friends, drudging work, and painful memories, and half in pursuit of a girl, his father's ghost, and a new life. "Brilliantly funny: fast, sharp, constant banter, even when the narrator is only talking to himself." Times Literary Supplement "A hilarious and touching insight into the mind of a young man, balanced between naivety and maturity." The List"
