Le mie due "immersioni" tunisine mi hanno dato modo di "assaggiare", con il cervello, lo sguardo, l'olfatto, l'udito e il gusto: colori, sapori, silenzi, panorami e quant'altro si "affolla" nel paese maghrebino.Scendendo da nord verso sud, il viaggiatore ha la possibilit di accostarsi gradatamente ai diversi habitat che compongono il territorio. Partendo da Tunisi si attraversano regioni su regioni punteggiate da una miriade di alberi d'olivo. Che andranno a diradarsi solo nelle regioni pi meridionali e semidesertiche. Lasciando il posto a vegetazioni pi povere e arbustifere. Sulla fascia costiera, invece, l'olivo d spesso il "testimone" all'albero da frutto. Ma un'altra grossa presenza, che l'immaginario collettivo identifica con il deserto, rappresentata dalla palma, anzi da centinaia di migliaia di palme. Che gi incontriamo nelle oasi marittime di Gab s e Mareth. Per non parlare di quelle che "affrescano" l'isola di Djerba. Ma forse queste sono solo eccezioni. Poich le oasi, quelle autentiche, le incontreremo verso il confine con l'Algeria. Laddove il Sahara sabbioso, il Grande Erg Orientale, spinge le sue immense lingue dunose nell'ovest del paese. Quasi ad offrire su un vassoio, a chi si inoltra fin l , il meglio del fascinoso e irresistibile richiamo del deserto. Dove l'infinito regna supremo. Come infinito il numero delle palme esistenti nelle grandiose oasi di pianura di Douz, Nefta e Tozeur. Non a caso localizzate nel Bled el-Djerid, il "paese delle palme". Ho accennato all'aspetto fitogeografico, perch in definitiva piante e vegetazione sono le prime cose che risaltano subito agli occhi del viaggiatore. Rappresentando le "spie", le cartine di tornasole dei diversi ecosistemi presenti. E i loro estremi passano da un habitat di tipo mediterraneo ad uno di tipo prettamente desertico. Inoltre ciascuno degli ecosistemi da me avvicinati rappresenta l'anticamera del prossimo, ancora pi arido, come una sorta di scatole cinesi o uno straordinario e immenso "manuale" di storia naturale. Cos baster sfogliarlo, pagina dopo pagina, per trovarsi di fronte al successivo ecosistema. Un'ulteriore conferma al mio assunto discende dal fatto che per arrivare fino al Sahara si deve necessariamente passare per il Sahel. Non quello noto per la sua desertificazione. Ma perch la Tunisia sembra essere l'unico paese arabo ad avere una regione prospiciente il mare chiamata appunto Sahel, cio "costa-sponda" (tra Hammamet e Mahdia). Il libro offre al lettore una sintesi del meglio che il paese ha da offrire. A partire dalle caratteristiche umanizzate: dal celebre Museo del Bardo di Tunisi con gli innumerevoli, meravigliosi mosaici romani provenienti dalle diverse aree archeologiche del paese, alla "citt santa" di Kairouan; dai resti archeologici punici (Cartagine) e romani (il "Colosseo" ad el-Djem, gli splendidi templi di Sufetula), agli originari nuclei urbani (le Medine di Tunisi, Sfax e Houmt Souk nell'incantevole isola di Djerba), alle fortificazioni: arabe (il Ribat di Monastir) ed europee (Bordj el-Kebir, a Djerba). Per non parlare delle cittadine e dei villaggi tradizionali, sia arabi - nel nord -, che berberi - a sud -. Compreso quell'incredibile agglomerato trogloditico di Matmata O di quelli "fantasma", poich abbandonati dopo le inondazioni (nelle oasi di montagna di Chebika, Tamerza e Mides). E che dire dei suqs (Tunisi, Sfax, Tozeur), dei mercati settimanali non turisticizzati, della linea ferroviaria che spunta dal deserto e che convoglia il fosfato dalla ricca regione mineraria di Metlaoui fino a Gafsa e, poi, a Sfax, importante porto e citt industriale?E ancora: la steppa a sud della regione di Kairouan; le "lunari" montagne Matmata dell'interno; i miraggi intravisti in lontananza; i "castelli" berberi (Medenine, Ksar Haddada, Tataouine, Chenini); le tracce lasciate dalla "guerra del deserto". Infine, nel Grande Erg Orientale, il castrum di Tisavar, ai "confini meridionali
