Caserta e stata la provincia dove maggiormente si e affermata la coltivazione e la lavorazione della canapa. La zona di Macerata Campania, come tutto il circondario di Marcianise, durante la fioritura di questa pianta si trasformava in una vasta distesa verde. La canapa ha avuto una parte importante nell'economia locale. Le fasi di lavorazione richiedevano fatica enorme, sia nell'estirparla, sia alla fine per maciullarla. Le donne nei mesi caldi si portavano negli ampi cortili dei massari, accanto alle "macennole", per ricavare la canapa grezza, che veniva dopo pulita con la spatola e alla fine filata. I gomitoli ottenuti venivano trasformati in tovaglie, lenzuola, federe e altri capi di corredo. La sua scomparsa comincio negli anni Sessanta del secolo scorso con l'introduzione delle fibre artificiali. Il suo posto fu preso dal tabacco, la cui coltivazione appariva meno faticosa.
