Speaking Culturally

Speaking Culturally

Fern L. Johnson

SAGE Publications Inc
1999
nidottu
In Speaking Culturally: Language Diversity in the United States, author Fern Johnson probes the rich cultural legacies and deep cultural dimensions underlying discourse in the U.S. This culturally rich examination of discourse places the changing demographics of the United States in linguistic perspective and draws upon the author's "language-centered perspective on culture" to illuminate the discourses associated with gender and with African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Asian Americans. Language is placed in the context of the histories, multiplicities, and cultural themes influencing its users. The final section of the book explores the implications of language diversity, first by showing how culturally nuanced language carries consequences in the justice and medical systems, in school, and at work; and then by examining two of the most heated language issues in the country today: ebonics and bilingual education. Johnson concludes by advocating bilingual education for all citizens, regardless of native language.

When people who love each other can't be together, it's heartbreaking. And when a child is too young to understand a sudden, prolonged cut-off from a beloved relative or friend, everyone hurts. In Happy Harper Thursdays, Fern Schumer Chapman explains to young children, simply and clearly, why we can't be with the people we love during the Coronavirus. This colorful, delightfully illustrated book captures how this pandemic disrupts the cherished routine of a grandmother and granddaughter. When the two can see and hear each other only electronically, the confused child wonders why she and her grandmother aren't really together. Children often think they are responsible for events that have nothing to do with them. With that in mind, Chapman wrote Happy Harper Thursdays to help her granddaughter-- and millions of other children worldwide-- understand this difficult separation.

The Return of Happy Harper Thursdays: The Guiding Light of a Grandmother's Love
In this sequel to Happy Harper Thursdays, Harper finally sees her grandmother again, now that a vaccine is available for the "nasty bug" that kept them apart. But, instead of feeling happy and excited, Harper is angry at Mama Fern because she stayed away for so many months. Harper refuses to talk to her grandmother and acts as if she doesn't even know her. This colorful, delightfully illustrated book helps young children sort out their feelings and guides grandparents in how to navigate difficult situations. In The Return of Happy Harper Thursdays, children learn that even when they can't see cherished family members, love burns brightly-like a light that's always turned on.
