The post-modern conviction that meaning is indeterminate and self is an illusion, though fascinating and defensible in theory, leaves a number of scholarly and pedagogical questions unsatisfied. Authoring the phenomenological act or felt sense of creating a text is "a remarkably black box," say Haswell and Haswell, yet it should be one of the central preoccupations of scholars in English studies. Not only can the study of authoring accommodate the "social turn" since post-modernism, they argue, but it accommodates as well conceptions of, and the lived experience of, personal potentiality and singularity.

The postmodern conviction that meaning is indeterminate and self is an illusion, though fascinating and defensible in theory, leaves a number of scholarly and pedagogical questions unsatisfied. Authoring the phenomenological act or felt sense of creating a text is a remarkably black box, say Haswell and Haswell, yet it should be one of the central preoccupations of scholars in English studies. Not only can the study of authoring accommodate the social turn since postmodernism, they argue, but it accommodates as well conceptions of, and the lived experience of, personal potentiality and singularity. Without abandoning the value of postmodern perspectives, Haswell and Haswell use their own perspective of authorial potentiality and singularity to reconsider staple English-studies concerns such as gender, evaluation, voice, character, literacy, feminism, self, interpretation, assessment, signature, and taste. The essay is unique as well in the way that its authors embrace often competing realms of English studies, drawing examples and arguments equally from literary and compositionist research. In the process, the Haswells have created a Big Idea book, and a critique of the field. Their point is clear: the singular person/mysterious black box/author merits deeper consideration than we have given it, and the book s crafted and woven explorations provide the intellectual tools to move beyond both political divisions and theoretical impasses. Memoirs are tricky, especially when the author isn't widely known. But Janis Stout tackles the memoir with a new and inventive approach—she organizes her memories around the houses she's lived in. “Sometimes,' she wrote, “I picture my life as a long row of houses.' Houses, she claims, are metaphors for the structures of our lives, and Stout's houses twine their way through this memoir along with reflections on work and retirement, marriages good and bad, and quietness for engaging in the important last work of life. She is, she says, a little different in each house—but each house shaped who she became as she prepared to move into the last house, the house of retirement.A college professor, mother of four sons, and wife, she writes of her early life through the lens of the houses she lived in at the time of events. There was the rock house of her early childhood from which she escaped to a failed early marriage that produced her sons. Other houses enfold her determination to finish college and her PhD; her concern for a son who is blind and brain-damaged; and, finally, a new, happy and enduring marriage.Stout recounts the planning and building of the dream house in the New Mexico mountains, where she and her husband, Loren, would build new lives in retirement. And then their lives take a sudden turn when health issues made the house impractical. New Mexico wasn't, after all, the last house.

What does it mean when a man writes in the voice of a woman? Haswell finds Yeats's answer in his theory of the creative self as bisexual that arose from his experiment in automatic writing.

Snacks is a history of Canadian snack foods, of the independent producers and workers who make them, and of the consumers who can’t put them down. Janis Thiessen profiles several iconic Canadian snack food companies, including Old Dutch Potato Chips, Hawkins Cheezies, and chocolate maker Ganong. These companies have developed in distinctive ways, reflecting the unique stories of their founders and their intense connection to specific locations. These stories of salty or sweet confections also reveal a history that is at odds with popular notions of “junk food.” Through extensive oral history and archival research, Thiessen uncovers the roots of our deep loyalties to different snack foods, what it means to be an independent snack food producer, and the often-quirky ways snacks have been created and marketed.Clearly written, extensively illustrated, and lavish with detail about some of Canadians’ favorite snacks, this is a lively and entertaining look at food and labour history.

This collection of papers encourages social and biological scientists to question their presentations of African Americans and to recognize that afrocentricity is important in refocusing portrayals of African Americans. It contrasts the production of these cultural portrayals by the majority of the U.S. population with those by African Americans themselves. It shows the process of creating a racial identity as well as the historical background related to a new evaluation of what it is to be African American in the United States.

Playing It Safe With Mr. See-More Safety --- Let's Rap and Rhyme
Playing It Safe With Mr. See-More Safety(TM) - Let's Rap and Rhyme - is the first of a series dedicated to teaching children how to be safety conscious as they leave their parents' protective arms and begin taking their first steps toward independence. The poetic style offers children a way to remember important concepts through the use of repetition and rhyme. As children listen to the rhymes, they will begin to refer to them in their everyday lives. The animated character, Mr. See-More Safety, was created to be a friend to children by encouraging them to make safer choices. Although entertainment is important so children will not lose interest, the objective is for these safety messages to become firmly established. These rhymes are filled with vital information which parents often assume children know, but in actuality, may not. By receiving valuable safety instruction at an early age, children will have a chance to develop sound habits that will last a lifetime. Playing It Safe With Mr. See-More Safety was written for children of all ages. Parents can enjoy the illustrations with very young children and at the same time help them interpret the significance of what is being portrayed. As children begin to read, the words will reinforce the illustrations which they are already familiar with. By observing and carefully discussing each scene with a parent or teacher, children will be helped to identify the kind of situations that could lead to an accident. Consequently, they will be in a much better position to know what to do should they ever be faced with a real life situation. As children enter each new stage of development, they will have a better understanding of "cause and effect" and the connection between a person's actions and the consequences that could follow. Allowing children to role play scenarios that contain hidden dangers will help them see how easy it is for just the "right" circumstances to lead to disaster. This interactive method fosters active participation in the learning process, thus making the information easier for children to understand and apply. Moreover, sharing the rhymes with older children will open up an avenue for discussion which could prove to be extremely beneficial. By using this book as a springboard for ongoing dialogue, children will have an opportunity to clarify important safety issues in relation to their own lives. It is our hope that Mr. See-More Safety will become a role model so children will have a strong desire to emulate him. His positive influence will help them resist negative peer pressure to act in an irresponsible or dangerous manner. Mr. See-More Safety's goal is to teach children how to identify serious risks in their environment and find ways to eliminate them where they have the ability to do so. He approaches the topic of safety in a gentle fashion, but due to the seriousness of the subject matter the illustrations, as well as the text, must send a powerful message and cannot be watered-down. The issue of safety must continue to be our first priority because our children are our most precious gifts. We hope Mr. See-More Safety becomes a welcome partner in the effort to help children think critically and perceptively, thereby preventing the conditions that so often lead to tragedy. We must make every effort to give our children the tools that will help them to be as safe as possible. So without further ado, let us begin working together to achieve this most important mission

Only on Sundays: Mahalia Jackson's Long Journey
Who was the young Halie Jackson, the orphan 'taken on, ' by her hard Aunt Duke after the death of her mother, the child who loved listening to Bessie Smith, playing baseball with the boys on Saturday evening, and singing grown folks' gospels on Sunday morning. The tall girl who, at 16, stole away against Aunt Duke's wishes, to Chicago's Promised Land - the Promised Land that wasn't, but would become home and allow her to nurture her dreams, sing for her supper, and stretch her boundaries as a black woman, in time acquiring unparalleled fame and wealth. Mahalia Jackson changed the world with her voice. Yet, in spite of her wealth and fame, there was a gaping hole inside, put there when her mother Charity died. Little Halie was only six, and Charity's leaving would forever dampen her happiness, cause her to forever look for something to take her place, spreading her love thin-- among family, friends, acquaintances, admirers and sometimes lovers. She was a woman who abhorred being alone, Mahalia avoided the mirrors that forced her to analyze the who, and why of her present and her past. Loneliness, though, was part of the package for those blessed with global fame. And, so was falling in love often... and too often, unwisely. The woman with the beautiful smile, and more charisma than any one woman should have, would know heartbreak and despair throughout her life. Mahalia's relentless drive, her need for material security and the desire to make her family proud eventually led to the gospel queen's spiritual and health melt-down, proving impossible, the "happily ever-after," story she'd dreamed of all those nights in New Orleans' Nigger Town, as she fell asleep to the vibration of the trains traveling just feet from her home. Mahalia Jackson's reason for being miraculously changed after her chance meeting of the young Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1956. It was Martin who introduced her to a different kind of dream, a higher purpose. Their years-long symbiotic friendship and civil rights collaborations were powerful, life changing for both. Her voice serving as a balm for America's hurts and deferred dreams; Martin's words, impelling Blacks and whites to work together to change the soul of America. Mahalia's death in 1972 was too soon. Yet, there was so much packed into her 60 years on this earth; an astounding legacy that helps define America and the pre- and post-civil rights world she lived and moved inside. Only on Sundays: Mahalia Jackson's Long Journey, adds an important chapter to this great American's life story.
