This book reports the impact a four-year longitudinal study (Representations, Oral Language and Engagement in Mathematics (RoleM)) had on teachers and students from 16 schools in disadvantaged contexts. It offers theories with regard to the interplay between teaching and learning mathematics as teachers and students in these contexts implement a mathematics program. The data are longitudinal, drawn from 154 teachers and their students (up to 1738 students) from the first four years of school (Foundation to Year 3). To ascertain the effectiveness of the RoleM Professional Learning model, teachers were interviewed three times a year and pre and post-tests were administered to students at the beginning and end of each year. Students’ results indicated that all students’ understanding of mathematics improved significantly, with the ESL students showing the greatest gains. Their results matched the norm-referenced expectations for all Australian students of this age. This book shares the journey of these teachers, Indigenous teacher aides and students. It outlines the dimensions of the research findings that supported teachers to become effective teachers of mathematics and assisted students in becoming successful learners of mathematics. The book also draws on the expertise of researchers from both Canada and New Zealand. They share the similarities and the differences between RoleM findings and their own contexts, in order to draw general conclusions for the effective teaching and learning of mathematics at the margins of society.
Maternal Ecologies:: Feminist Practices of Motherhood, Land, and Creativity
Jessie Carson; Jodie Hawkes; Pete Phillips
Demeter Press
2026
pokkari
This anthology explores the interconnections between the maternal, the land, and ecology through ecofeminist and interdisciplinary creative practices. It reimagines mothering as an ecological and relational practice shaped by place, history, and environment. The editors, writing from geographically distant contexts, invited contributors to examine how maternal identities intersect with colonialism, migration, ecology, and creative practice. Across fourteen chapters, artists and scholars use performance, storytelling, dance, poetry, and visual art to illuminate maternal experiences as ecological, political, and embodied. The book highlights how mothering can foster kinship beyond the human, challenge boundaries between culture and nature, and serve as a form of environmental activism. Divided into three sections - Embodied Ecologies and Maternal Landscapes, Storytelling, Ritual, and Eco-Relational Pedagogies, and Ecofeminist Lineages and Radical Belonging - the anthology foregrounds maternal creativity as a site of care, resistance, and renewal amid ecological crisis, inviting readers to reimagine belonging and connection to earth.

Cognitive behaviour therapy is arguably the most well-known, most widely used and most accessible form of talking therapy in the Western world. It has been adopted by the NHS as the mainstay of its IAPT primary care therapy programme. It converts readily and successfully into online formats and self-help programmes. In this updated introduction to CBT, three of its foremost proponents and practitioners summarise its origins, principles, how it works in practice, and the research that underpins its widespread use. This second, revised edition updates the research and includes the third and fourth ‘waves’ of cognitive behaviour approaches and other more recent developments that have emerged since the first edition was published.
