Soviet-Vietnam Relations and the Role of China 1949-64
This new book analyzes how the Soviet leadership evaluated developments in Soviet-Vietnamese relations in the years from 1949 to 1964. Focusing on how Soviet leaders actually perceived China’s role in Vietnam relative to the Soviet role, it shows how these perceptions influenced the Soviet-Vietnamese relationship. It also explains how and when Moscow’s enthusiasm for the active Chinese role in Vietnam came to an end – or, in other words, from what point was Beijing’s involvement in Vietnam perceived as a liability rather than an asset, in the strategies of Soviet policy makers. This book is an excellent resource for all students with an interest in Soviet-Vietnamese relations and of strategic studies and international relations in general.
Social Security in Contemporary Japan
The present study analyzes the livelihood security system of contemporary Japan in international comparison from a historical and gender perspective. It posits ‘livelihood security systems’ rather than ‘welfare states’ or ‘welfare regimes’ as its object of analysis to enter the role of non-governmental institutions and of governmental policies reaching beyond income transfers into vision.Based on rich statistical materials, the evolution of Japan’s livelihood security system in recent decades is traced to reveal a rigid male breadwinner orientation increasingly out of step with social realities. The need for remedying the gender bias built into Japan’s social insurance schemes has been politically highlighted since the late 1990s, but legislative action has continued to be deferred. The author argues that at present the livelihood security system of Japan is not only dysfunctional, but actually functioning in reverse, in a sense of furthering social exclusion. The study concludes with suggestions for a possible reconstruction of Japan’s social security system, arguing for an increased role of the ‘third sector’ or ‘social economy’ in livelihood security and care provision. This book will appeal to scholars and students with an interest in social policy, welfare economics and gender studies, as well as Japanese politics and society.

Quantitative Methods in Population Health

Quantitative Methods in Population Health

Mari Palta

A user’s guide to advanced statistical techniques for nonstatisticians The study of population health often involves the use of observational data from existing data sets, complex survey designs and longitudinal follow-up. Ordinary regression analysis, familiar to most researchers and practitioners is inadequate for analyzing such data and answering important questions about the relationship of risk factors to health. Nonstatisticians such as epidemiologists and health services researchers require a working knowledge of the sophisticated modeling techniques used by professional statisticians. Quantitative Methods in Population Health provides an accessible guide for students in an applied statistics sequence as well as for practicing researchers and professionals. Mari Palta’s timely text assumes some background in mathematics and in applied statistics and regression analysis, but little knowledge of statistical theory. The Statistical Analysis System® (SAS) is an ubiquitous tool in the field, and some basic knowledge of its structure is assumed. Each topic starts with an explanation of the theoretical background that is necessary for understanding the technique as well as for establishing a basis to adopt more advanced methods or software in the future. The author endeavors to keep the material immediately applicable by providing detailed instructions for how to run and interpret procedures in SAS. Topics covered include: *Regression analysis with weights *Unequal variance *Correlated and longitudinal outcomes *Mixed effects *Generalized linear models *Generalized estimating equations SAS commands for applying the methods–including PROC REG, PROC MIXED, and PROC GENMOD–are provided, and each section includes real-life examples. Quantitative Methods in Population Health proves a seamless meshing of the theoretical and practical in this vital field.

The first extended study of the renowned artists' collective Fluxus, Corporate Imaginations examines the group's emergence on three continents from 1962 to 1978, and its complexities, contradictions, and historical specificity. Its founder, George Maciunas, organized Fluxus like a multinational corporation, simulating corporate organization and commodity flows, a reflection of how he imagined critical art practice at that time. Despite the collective's critical stance toward the corporation, Fluxus shared aspects of the rising corporate culture of the day. In this book, Mari Dumett addresses the "business" of Fluxus and explores the larger discursive issues of organization, mediatization, routinization, automation, commoditization, and systematization that Fluxus artists both manipulated and exposed in bold relief. A study of six central figures in the group-George Brecht, Alison Knowles, Maciunas, Nam June Paik, Mieko Shiomi, and Robert Watts,-reveals how they developed historically specific strategies of mimicking the capitalist system. These artists appropriated tools, occupied spaces, revealed operations, and, ultimately, "performed the system" itself by employing an aesthetics of organization, communication, events, branding, routine, and global mapping. Invoking "corporate imaginations," Fluxus artists proposed "strategies for living" as conscious creative subjects within a totalizing and increasingly global system, and demonstrated how these strategies must be repeated in an ongoing negotiation of new relations of power and control between subject and system.

The management of buyer-supplier relations has come to be regarded as a key to achieving manufacturing competitiveness, particularly in sectors facing global competition based on both price and quality. This book is a theoretical and empirical exploration of the link between the type of buyer-supplier relations and corporate performance. Dr Sako examines how British and Japanese companies in the electronics industry manage their relationships with buyers and suppliers, the empirical study comprising a three-way comparison of a Japanese customer company, a British customer company, and a Japanese company in Britain, and an analysis of 36 supplier companies in Britain and Japan. Variations of the companies' business practices are assessed in terms of technology, the nature of market competition, the national legal framework, financial structures, employment systems, and the mode of entrepreneurship. The author identifies two distinct approaches in the two countries - the arm's-length contractual relation (ACR) in Britain, and the obligational contractual relation (OCR) in Japan - and argues that the trust and interdependence present in the latter can be a powerful springboard from which to achieve corporate success.

'There is an icy, dispassionate grip to Jungstedt's writing that recalls Henning Mankell' MetroThe first body they found was the dog. The poor creature's throat has been cut, and one paw severed completely. Then they found the body of the woman. She had been stabbed, again and again; she was naked, a piece of cloth had been stuffed into her mouth. The picturesque holiday island of Gotland is in the middle of a busy tourist season when the young woman is discovered murdered. Suspicion falls on her husband - the couple had been seen fighting the evening before. Inspector Anders Knutas is hoping it will be a straight-forward case; the local authorities are hoping so too, but more out of an interest in protecting the tourist trade than any desire to see justice served. Then another victim is discovered, again she is a young woman and she has been murdered in the same chilling manner. Inspector Knutas must face up to the horrifying prospect that there is a serial killer loose on the island.Knutas, aided by investigative journalist Johan Berg, begins to piece together the tragic history that unites the two victims, and alarmingly points to more murders to come. The killer remains unknown, moving freely, unseen, on the island. All that is clear is that the two victims are just the beginning, unless Knutas and Berg find the killer before he strikes again.

'Strong characters raise questions of how well we know those close to us...gripping' Financial TimesThe dead man was a drunk; a regular on the park benches of Gotland's city centre. He had been celebrating winning 80,000 Krona at the races. His body is discovered by one of his drinking buddies: he is drenched in blood and someone or something has left a hole the size of a fist in the back of his head. It's winter on the island of Gotland. The tourists have returned home. The tree branches are bare, the sky is sleet grey and the days are getting shorter and darker. Winter is a quiet time for Chief Inspector Anders Knutas and Detective Karin Jacobsson; the tourists tend to take the violent crimes with them back to the mainland. To keep their lives simple, they are tempted to assume that the victim died as a result of a drunken brawl over money. But all of the clues point to something far more sinister. Then 14-year old Fanny Jansson, a volunteer at the local stables, vanishes. At first Knutas and Jacobsson find it hard to believe that the two cases are linked: one is a violent murder, the other, the disappearance of a lonely and isolated child who has probably run away. Painstakingly, they work the clues, assisted by ambitious TV reporter Johan Berg. But what none of them realise is that truth is much closer to home than they'd ever imagine.

'One of Scandinavia's best crime writers, no mean compliment in a crowded field' The TimesIt's summer on Gotland and an international group of archaeology students are excavating an ancient Viking site. The camaraderie and holiday spirits of the group are shattered when one of their number, a Dutch student called Martina, disappears. Rumours abound about a secret relationship she was having with someone on the island, but is her disappearance simply a lover's intrigue? When the body of a horse is discovered in a local farmer's field, other rumours begin to circulate. The horse had been decapitated and the head has vanished. As Inspector Knutas begins his investigation, echoes from Gotland's Viking past begin to trouble his search. When Martina's naked body is found hanging from a tree, with what look like ritualistic markings on her skin, there can be little further question. Someone is calling to the old Gods of Gotland. Martina has been killed according to the Viking ritual of the three-fold death, and the one thing the ritual points to is that more deaths will follow.
