Almost 5,000 years ago Enheduanna took time to write 42 hymns and a poem called Min-Me-Sar-Ra or The Exaultation of Inanna. She is considered the first woman author in recorded history. Forward fast a few thousand years and we are priviledged to have the more sophisticated pennings of Michael Thomas, and you do not have to carry huge volumes of stone tablets to read it. Yet, Michael pays homage to the greatness of those who blazed the trail upon which the rest of us travel. He pulls it all into an amalgamous knowledge of expressive language. Come and see what poetry has evolved to over 5,000 years.

This book explores Michael Psellos' place in the history of Greek rhetoric and self-representation and his impact on the development of Byzantine literature. Avoiding the modern dilemma that vacillates between Psellos the pompous rhetorician and Psellos the ingenious thinker, Professor Papaioannou unravels the often misunderstood Byzantine rhetoric, its rich discursive tradition and the social fabric of elite Constantinopolitan culture which rhetoric addressed. The book offers close readings of Psellos' personal letters, speeches, lectures and historiographical narratives, and analysis of other early Byzantine and classical models of authorship in Byzantine book culture, such as Gregory of Nazianzos, Synesios of Cyrene, Hermogenes and Plato. It also details Psellos' innovative attention to authorial creativity, performative mimesis and the aesthetics of the self. Simultaneously, it traces within Byzantium complex expressions of emotion and gender, notions of authorship and subjectivity, and theories of fictionality and literature, challenging the common fallacy that these are modern inventions.

We all have our take on what is divine and what makes things divine. As we get older we tend to spend more time contemplating the divine. When the author, Michael Thomas, first saw a picture of this fresco, he was stricken with feelings of identification. For him, this picture was a wonderful representation of the divine, so he has chosen to share it with his readers as a personal expression of divinity. In his fifth volume of poetry, Michael Thomas becomes more philosophical and begins to plum the depths of humanity, looking for the goodness that he can attach himself to . As readers, we have the chance to attach ourselves to divinity through his words.

As an accountant, Michael Thomas has had difficulty applying his great knowledge of history, literature and art. But in his poetry, he is free to express his understandings in unbridled creative and playful ways. This, his most recent book of poetry is likely his most creative and playful, as he becomes more versed and practiced every day. Michael is blessed with an extensive vocabulary and the understanding of how to blend words to create effects which are more than the sum of the phrases, like a jazz master plays a saxophone solo. You cannot put what you heard into words, you only know that it left you awed and satisfied when it was over. Such is the sublime nature of high art in all of its varied forms. In Michael Thomas Poetry 6, we have a collection that in totality reaches that sublimity a multitude of times, leaving the reader many memorable experiences

Michael of Ephesus: On Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics 10 with Themistius: On Virtue
The two texts translated in this volume of the Ancient Commentators on Aristotle series both compare the happiness of the practical life, which is subject to the hazards of fortune, with the happiness of the life of philosophical contemplation, which is subject to fewer needs. The first is Michael of Ephesus' 12th-century commentary on Book 10 of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, written (alongside his commentaries on Books 5 and 9) to fill gaps in the Neoplatonists' commentaries from the 6th century. He recognizes that lives of practicality and philosophy may be combined, and gives his own account of the superiority of the contemplative. The second is Themistius' text On Virtue, written in the 4th century AD. He was an important teacher and commentator on Aristotle, an orator and leading civil servant in Constantinople. His philosophical oration is here argued to be written in support of the Emperor Julian’s insistence against the misuse of free speech by a Cynic Heraclius, who had satirised him. Julian had previously criticised Themistius but here he combines his political and philosophical roles in seeking to mend relations with his former pupil.
Michael of Ephesus: On Aristotle's On the Generation of Animals 1-2
Michael of Ephesus' commentary on Aristotle's On the Generation of Animals is the earliest surviving, and perhaps first, commentary on this foundational zoological treatise. Composed in the 12th century as part of the Aristotelian revival which took place under the patronage of Constantinople's Anna Comnena, this commentary represents the state of the art of Byzantine and ancient scholarship on the philosophical questions concerning the origins and development of life. Translated here for the first time into a modern language, Michael's commentary on Books I-II of Aristotle's On the Generation of Animals focuses on Aristotle's core philosophical commitments concerning animal generation: the parts of animals responsible for reproduction, the contributions of males and females, the role of nature and the divine, the creation of different kinds of soul, and the stages of embryonic development. Throughout the commentary, Michael offers unique and insightful readings of Aristotle's text and records the opinions of his predecessors and contemporaries on questions of biology. The treatise is vital reading for those studying Aristotle's biology as well as the Byzantine renaissance of biological inquiry.

Michael Chekhov’s Acting Technique

Sinéad Rushe

Methuen Drama

Intended for actors, directors, teachers and researchers, this book offers an exceptionally clear and thorough introduction to the renowned acting technique developed by Michael Chekhov. Sinéad Rushe’s book provides a complete overview of the whole method, and includes illuminating explanations of its principles, as well as a wide range of practical exercises that illustrate, step by step, how they can be applied to dramatic texts. Part One provides an outline of the ideas that underpin the work, which help to prepare practitioners to become responsive and receptive, and to awaken their imagination. Part Two charts a journey through the foundational psychophysical exercises that can both orient an actor's training routine and be applied directly to the development of a role. Part Three focuses on more specific and elaborate methods of scene work, characterisation and the art of transformation. Drawing on the full range of Chekhov's writing in English and French, this book also examines unpublished material from the Dartington Hall archives and features interviews with actors who have worked with the technique, including Simon Callow and Joanna Merlin. It illustrates Chekhov’s approach by referring to Rushe's own productions of Nikolai Gogol's short story Diary of a Madman and Shakespeare's Othello, as well as characters and scenes in Sarah Kane's Blasted and the contemporary American television series Breaking Bad. Michael Chekhov’s Acting Technique is an accessible, comprehensive and contemporary point of reference for those already trained in the method, as well as an initiation and toolkit for practitioners who are just beginning to discover it.
