Methods for Partial Differential Equations

Methods for Partial Differential Equations

This book provides an overview of different topics related to the theory of partial differential equations. Selected exercises are included at the end of each chapter to prepare readers for the “research project for beginners” proposed at the end of the book. It is a valuable resource for advanced graduates and undergraduate students who are interested in specializing in this area. The book is organized in five parts:In Part 1 the authors review the basics and the mathematical prerequisites, presenting two of the most fundamental results in the theory of partial differential equations: the Cauchy-Kovalevskaja theorem and Holmgren's uniqueness theorem in its classical and abstract form. It also introduces the method of characteristics in detail and applies this method to the study of Burger's equation.Part 2 focuses on qualitative properties of solutions to basic partial differential equations, explaining the usual properties of solutions to elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic equations for the archetypes Laplace equation, heat equation and wave equation as well as the different features of each theory. It also discusses the notion of energy of solutions, a highly effective tool for the treatment of non-stationary or evolution models and shows how to define energies for different models.Part 3 demonstrates how phase space analysis and interpolation techniques are used to prove decay estimates for solutions on and away from the conjugate line. It also examines how terms of lower order (mass or dissipation) or additional regularity of the data may influence expected results.Part 4 addresses semilinear models with power type non-linearity of source and absorbing type in order to determine critical exponents: two well-known critical exponents, the Fujita exponent and the Strauss exponent come into play. Depending on concrete models these critical exponents divide the range of admissible powers in classes which make it possible toprove quite different qualitative properties of solutions, for example, the stability of the zero solution or blow-up behavior of local (in time) solutions. The last part features selected research projects and general background material.

The Life and Times of Jesus: The Messiah Behind Enemy Lines (Part II)

Jesus was a Messiah behind enemy lines - God come into a sinful world ruled by evil. He was on a secret mission to save humanity. To Jesus' first-century Jewish contemporaries, whatever the Nazarene might be, he was not simply 'another good rabbi.' Jesus was a polarizing figure. One believed either that this powerful preacher and wonderworker was uniquely of God or that he was an agent of the Evil One. As he said in Luke's Gospel, "Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters" (Lk. 11:23).We often speak of the love, mercy, and compassion of Jesus, but Malachi also prophesied of him, "Yes, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts. But who will endure the day of his coming? And who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner's fire" (Mal. 3:1-2). That is indeed how he came. Jesus was always moved by love of God and neighbor, but he was not always 'nice.' He was "meek and humble of heart" (Mt. 11:29) but never tame. Innocent though he was, it is little wonder that his boldness and zeal for righteousness provoked such powerful enemies; he knew it would be so. Jesus walked the earth at a time when human life had become cheapened, and prompt and brutal execution was a matter not so much of justice as of expedience. Ultimately, Jesus' paradoxical roles as fiery prophet and meek Lamb of God would intersect on the wood of the cross.

Campus Compact is pleased to announce the availability of Partnerships That Work: Stories and Lessons from Campus/Community Collaborations. It describes the $1.5 million three-year project conducted by the New York and the Pennsylvania Campus Compacts, funded by Learn and Serve America--Higher Education, entitled "Building on Our Strengths." Through subgrants to 16 projects, over 70 campuses and their community partners received grants to establish and expand service-learning via networks among regional partners or within academic disciplines. Valuable lessons about campus/community partnerships, the development of loosely-coupled networks, and the many variations of community-based education, civic engagement and service-learning emerged across a range of institutional types. The lessons learned should be useful to institutional leaders and policy-makers as well as to faculty and staff involved in the public mission of higher education.
Modeling of Gas-to-Particle Mass Transfer in Turbulent Flows

Modeling of Gas-to-Particle Mass Transfer in Turbulent Flows

This Brief focuses on the dispersion of high-porosity particles, their entrainment into the vapor-laden stream, and the condensation of vapor onto the particles. The authors begin with a simple/static problem, focusing on transport within the particle. They go on to consider the high-resolution simulation of particles in a turbulent flow and the time-dependent evolution of the fluid-particle fields. Finally, they examine the more computationally-affordable large-eddy simulation of gas-to-particle mass-transfer. The book ends with a summary and challenges as well as directions for the area.
