This title was first published in 2002: Making use of the growing body of research in recent years on the nature of creativity, Netta Goldsmith here presents a new view of the famous poet whose personality has long frustrated scholars as elusive. Goldsmith tells the story of Pope's life so as to show the factors-personal and public, psychological and social-which shaped his character and enabled him to secure widespread recognition as a major poet. Discussions of significant works are integrated into the narrative covering main events and key relationships, as well as illustrating points made throughout about Pope's approach to his art. Among other things this book shows how vulnerable Pope felt as a Papist in a time of endemic Jacobite activity, and how his fear of possible prosecution for sedition determined much of his conduct and the way he shaped his career. Alexander Pope: The evolution of a poet not only provides a fresh perspective on Pope, but also on the very nature of literary creativity.

Critically Impaired Infants and End of Life Decision Making
Decisions to withdraw or withhold life-sustaining treatment are contentious, and offer difficult moral dilemmas to both medical practitioners and the judiciary. This issue is exacerbated when the patient is unable to exercise autonomy and is entirely dependent on the will of others. This book focuses on the legal and ethical complexities surrounding end of life decisions for critically impaired and extremely premature infants. Neera Bhatia explores decisions to withdraw or withhold life-sustaining treatment from critically impaired infants and addresses the controversial question, which lives are too expensive to treat? Bringing to bear such key issues as clinical guidance, public awareness, and resource allocation, the book provides a rational approach to end of life decision making, where decisions to withdraw or withhold treatment may trump other competing interests. The book will be of great interest and use to scholars and students of bioethics, medical law, and medical practitioners.
The Divine in Modern Hebrew Literature
Demonstrating the pervasive presence of God in modern Hebrew literature, this book explores the qualities that twentieth-century Hebrew writers attributed to the divine, and examines their functions against the simplistic dichotomy between religious and secular literature. The volume follows both chronological and thematic paths, offering a panoramic and multilayered analysis of the various strategies in which modern Hebrew writers, from the turn of the nineteenth century through the twenty-first century pursued in their attempt to represent the divine in the face of metaphysical, theological, and representational challenges. Modern Hebrew literature emerged during the nineteenth century as part of the Haskalah (Jewish Enlightenment) movement, which attempted to break from the traditional modes of Jewish intellectual and social life. The Hebrew literature that arose in this period embraced the rebellious nature of the Haskalah and is commonly characterized as secular in nature, defying Orthodoxy and rejecting God. Nevertheless, this volume shows that modern Hebrew literature relied on traditional narratological and poetic norms in its attempt to represent God. Despite its self-declared secularity, it engaged deeply with traditional problems such as the nature of God, divine presence, and theodicy.Examining these radical changes, this volume is a key text for scholars and students of modern Hebrew literature, Jewish studies and the intersection of religion and literature.

Most Anticipated by Goodreads, People, BookRiot, Reactor, Screenrant, and more For fans of Jordan Peele's films, Stranger Things, and The Other Black Girl, Listen To Your Sister is a laugh-out-loud, deeply terrifying, and big-hearted speculative horror novel from electrifying debut talent Neena Viel. Twenty-five year old Calla Williams is struggling since becoming guardian to her brother, Jamie. Calla is overwhelmed and tired of being the one who makes sacrifices to keep the family together. Jamie, full of good-natured sixteen-year-old recklessness, is usually off fighting for what matters to him or getting into mischief, often at the same time. Dre, their brother, promised he would help raise Jamie-but now the ink is dry on the paperwork and in classic middle-child fashion, he's off doing his own thing. And through it all, The Nightmare never stops haunting Calla: recurring images of her brothers dying that she is powerless to stop. When Jamie's actions at a protest spiral out of control, the siblings must go on the run. Taking refuge in a remote cabin that looks like it belongs on a slasher movie poster rather than an AirBNB, the siblings now face a new threat where their lives-and reality-hang in the balance. Their sister always warned them about her nightmares. They really should have listened. "A knockout debut." -Ashley Winstead "Incredibly original and seriously scary." - Nick Medina "A brilliant fever-dream of a novel that effortlessly dances between horror, literary, and family saga--sure to appeal to fans of Grady Hendrix, Tananarive Due, Mona Awad, and Stephen King. - Maria Dong

A suffocating and sharp narrative horror novel for fans of Victor LaValle and The Reformatory from "addictive" (Publishers Weekly) horror author Neena Viel, I'll Watch Your Baby is a haunting reimagining of Linda Taylor--known as the original Welfare Queen--pursued, scrutinized, celebrated and vilified, and the impact her image has had for generations. 1974. Lottie Turner is already infamous. Running a wheel of schemes and scams, she's willing to work for what she wants in...creative ways. But no business is more lucrative than desperate families looking to adopt a child--and there's only one way to procure children quickly. And the only way to take what's owed you is to cross the line no one else is willing to cross. 1994. Bless has finally found the family she deserved. After suffocating slowly with lackluster parents and a non-starter past, she's found the friends that means everything to her. That she'd live and die for. As they make their way across the country, one smash and grab at a time, Bless is used to acting fast and thinking on her feet. But someone is playing a long game. Someone has unfinished business. Soon Bless is trapped in a web of horrors past and present, where the only escape hatch is a path only she can walk, if she finds the courage to take it.

This book is my fourth anthology of poems with a sprinkling handful of short stories that I dedicate to my innermost "I." I celebrate with this book the true beginning of my poetic journey's one-year completion from April 2017 through April 2018. There is a flood of feeling that overflows all the time. Also, there are multiple passions rocketing inside the heart to soothe and calm. These emotions give birth to a spontaneous poetic itching that grabs me wholly.

We have been told a dozen times the story of Julie de Lespinasse and her love-affairs, of Madame de Stael and the victims of her amatory experiments, of Lauzun, Fersen, and Lafayette; yet one of the greatest romances of this enthralling period, the love-story of the Chevalier de Boufflers and the Comtesse de Sabran, has been allowed to pass into oblivion. Theirs was the "grande passion" of the times, "they loved each other," says Monsieur Victor du Bled, "with a deep love, so different to the liaisons a la mode, with a love such as we understand it"-we of today.Besides reconstructing the story, the author has endeavoured to reconstruct the background on which it was enacted-the Revolutionary Era. The French Revolution has been persistently misrepresented, and in consequence a host of popular delusions have grown up around it which must be dispelled if one would present fairly the point of view of those who played their part in that amazing drama.
