Charles Ray

pokkari
This career-spanning publication features conceptual, political, formal, and technical perspectives on the work of contemporary sculptor Charles Ray For Charles Ray (born 1953), sculpture is a way of thinking that informs his work across a wide range of media—from gelatin silver prints to porcelain, fiberglass, wood, and steel. Charles Ray: Figure Ground spans the whole of the artist’s fifty-year career, from his early photographs and performances through his intriguing, often unsettling sculptures, some of which are published here for the first time. The essays foreground Ray’s engagement with preexisting traditions, as well as charged issues around race, gender, and sexuality (notably expressed through his explorations of Mark Twain’s 1884 novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn) and investigate the modalities of touch that run through his work. In addition, a reflection by Ray himself and a conversation between the artist and Hal Foster offer further insights into his multifaceted practice. The first in-depth study of Man Ray’s groundbreaking rayographs of the 1920s and their interconnections with his Dada and Surrealist works Man Ray (1890–1976) worked in a range of media, but central to his practice was the rayograph, a type of photogram (or camera-less photograph) that he revolutionized and introduced into the Dada and Surrealist milieu of 1920s Paris. Oscillating between representation and abstraction, painting and photography, the rayograph was ambiguous in its making and subject matter, epitomizing avant-garde concerns of the day. This richly illustrated book is the first to look at Man Ray’s work through the lens of his eponymous process, tracing a through line from the rayographs to his paintings, photographs, drawings, objects, and films, and highlighting the interconnections and shared motifs among them. Stephanie D’Alessandro and Stephen C. Pinson analyze Man Ray’s innovative methods while also exploring key themes across his art production, such as chance, indeterminacy, transformation, and the dualities of solid and transparent, shadow and light, form and space, and object and body. X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry and Related Techniques

X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry and Related Techniques

X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) is a well-established analytical technique for qualitative and quantitative elemental analysis of a wide variety of routine quality control and research samples. Among its many desirable features, it delivers true multi-element character analysis, acceptable speed and economy, easy of automation, and the capacity to analyze solid samples. This remarkable contribution to this field provides a comprehensive and up-to-date account of basic principles, recent developments, instrumentation, sample preparation procedures, and applications of XRF analysis. If you are a professional in materials science, analytic chemistry, or physics, you will benefit from not only the review of basics, but also the newly developed technologies with XRF. Those recent technological advances, including the design of low-power micro- focus tubes and novel X-ray optics and detectors, have made it possible to extend XRF to the analysis of low-Z elements and to obtain 2D or 3D information on a micrometer-scale. And, the recent development and commercialization of bench top and portable instrumentation, offering extreme simplicity of operation in a low-cost design, have extended the applications of XRF to many more analytical problems.
X-Ray Optics & Inner-Shell Electronics of Hexagonal BN

X-Ray Optics & Inner-Shell Electronics of Hexagonal BN

In This book, special emphasis is placed on the interaction of X-ray polarised and non-polarised radiation with hexagonal BN (h-BN) crystal. h-BN is one of the most anisotropic layer compounds. Near the B and N K shell ionisation thresholds the dielectric tensor in h-BN demonstrates sharp variations with photon energy and results in intriguing optical properties of the compound. X-ray absorption near the thresholds is strongly influenced by the short range order parameters of the layers and demonstrates the pronounced "molecular" properties.

X-ray scattering techniques are a family of non-destructive analytical techniques which reveal information about the crystallographic structure, chemical composition and physical properties of materials and thin films. These techniques are based on observing the scattered intensity of an X-ray beam hitting a sample as a function of incident and scattered angle, polarization, and wavelength or energy. In this book, the authors present current research in the study of X-ray scattering, including real-time synchrotron X-ray scattering, applications of X-ray scattering in edible lipid systems; X-ray scattering of bacterial cell wall compounds and their neutralization and small angle X-ray scattering analysis of nanomaterials for ultra large scale integrated circuits.
Stevie Ray Vaughan: Day by Day, Night After Night
Stevie Ray Vaughan tightly grips a place in music history as an unmatched blues man and guitar legend. His unique style is unmistakable and has never been repeated. His otherworldly talent and relentless drive took him from humble beginnings in Texas bars to world tours and superstar status. His bustling career and steady stream of inspiring music came to an abrupt end all too soon at the age of 35 immediately following his triumph over the demons of addiction that followed him for years. Finally free and ready for bigger better things Vaughan was killed in a helicopter crash in 1990 leaving his many fans to mourn the musician they had grown to love and wonder what could have been.ÞIn a day-by-day format Craig Hopkins presents an unprecedented celebration of this artist. This book is the second installment of a two-volume account of Vaughan's life. With this work Hopkins delivers one of the most detailed biographies of any musician.ÞÊHis Final YearsÊ covers Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble's recording career from their debut release through their rise to stardom an exciting journey with its fair share of glory and controversy. Filled with testimonials from those who knew him best and from fans everywhere along with facts about tour dates and recordings and a lavish gallery of rare photographs this illustrated book (along with its companion ÊHis Early Years 1954-1982Ê) is the ultimate collector's item for any Stevie Ray Vaughan fan.

Cosmic rays are energetic particles originated from sources outside the Earth. Recently, there is a growing interest in studying the relationship between cosmic rays and climate, particularly under the context of global warming. This book provides a concise introduction on the topics at a level appropriate to graduate students and researchers. In this book, plasma physics, solar physics, cosmic rays physics as well as atmospheric physics are introduced. The historical relationship between the solar activity and climate as well as the recently observed relationship between cosmic rays and cloud formation are presented. The meteorological effects on cosmic rays and the measurements of atmospheric temperature profile by cosmic rays with its potential application to weather forecasting are discussed.

Lucknow is a city with magnificent history, architecture, culture and literature where once great musicians, poets and artists were patronized by the rich city elites and Nawabs, who made it the mecca of Hindustani art and culture. This book speaks of the rich tradition, history and culture during the final days of Lucknow's last Nawab, Wajid Ali Shah, through Satyajit Ray's major motion picture Shatranj Ke Khiladi or The Chess Players. In this book, Ray's narrative and socio-cultural representation of Lucknow are pitched against the original work of Munshi Premchand's short story by the same name, from which it was inspired. This work attempts to study Satyajit Ray's Shatranj Ke Khiladi in light of the actual historical events of nineteenth-century Lucknow, just before its annexation by the Raj. This work will analyze that period as depicted by Ray on celluloid, and the theme broadly highlights or rather studies the 'Imperial Manliness and Colonial Effeminacy', 'Politics of Annexation', 'Decadent Royalty' and 'Evolution of Performing Arts' during the reign of Wajid Ali Shah.
