Love, Zac: Small-Town Football and the Life and Death of an American Boy
"Love, Zac is not just a vital contribution to the national conversation about traumatic brain injury in athletes, it's so beautifully written it belongs on the shelf alongside classic works of literary journalism." --Jeanne Marie Laskas, New York Times bestselling author of Concussion In December 2015, Zac Easter, a twenty-four-year-old from small-town Iowa, decided to take his own life rather than continue his losing battle against traumatic brain injuries he had sustained as a high school football player and which led him to develop chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). For this deeply reported and powerfully moving true story, award-winning writer Reid Forgrave was given access to Zac's own diaries and was able to speak with Zac's family, friends, and coaches. He explores Zac's tight-knit, football-obsessed Midwestern community; he interviews leading brain scientists, psychologists, and sports historians; he takes a deep dive into the triumphs and sins of the sports entertainment industry; and he shows us the fallout from the traditional notions of manhood that football instills. For parents wondering about whether to allow their kids to play football, for players, former players, and fans, for anyone concerned about concussions and sports, this eye-opening, heart-wrenching, and ultimately inspiring story may be one of the most important books they will read.

Maxwell Fox didn't know what he would witness in France. America had only been in the Great War since April 2, 1917. Nothing could have prepared him for the horrors that awaited him and the rest of the men of the 4th Infantry "Ivy" Division. As the Meuse-Argonne Offensive raged on, Maxwell became assigned to a unit of stretcher bearers, men who were tasked with running into harm's way to rescue their fallen brethren from the clutches of death. This wouldn't be an easy job, but with Graham, Frank, and Ralph by his side, Maxwell had to rely on his team and hope to survive. A dark and honest look at the bond of brotherhood during war, The Stretcher Bearers tells the unforgettable tale of a young soldier trying to save the lives of wounded soldiers and keep the men he'd formed a bond with alive. But in the "war to end all wars," no one was safe.

I was a navigator in the 459 Bomb Group 758 Bomb Squadron flying B-24's from Torre Giulia Field, tower named 'Coffee Tower', a gravel airfield near Cerignola, on the Foggia Plains of Southeastern Italy during the period August 4, 1944 to May 16, 1945. I flew 50 combat missions over targets in Germany, Austria, Hungary, Poland, Yugoslavia and Northern Italy. Memorable missions were the six missions to bomb the Moosbierbaum Oil Refinery complex near Vienna, Austria. However, even more memorable missions than these formation raids were the lone missions I flew during the winter of 1944 and 1945. After many days of getting up at 3-4 AM. for breakfast, being briefed on formation missions for the day and going to the hardstand to standby at our plane loaded with bombs and fuel, only to have the recon plane advise the group that the Alps were socked in with clouds and the mission was to be scrubbed, the powers that be decided they had to help unnerve the Germans by sending one lone plane to bomb Germany and Poland. For whatever reason our crew was selected from our Squadron to fly these missions. The basic idea was that one lone plane was to be sent up in bad weather to bomb either by night or day with a plane from different squadrons sent up at different time intervals. These were terrifically hard missions as the weather was a big factor, clouds to altitudes of 25,000-30,000 feet, weather fronts and very cold outside the aircraft. One of our missions was at night to bomb Munich, Germany with our plane equipped with the new 'Mickey' device which we found out was airborne radar. Read about these experiences and more in 'Somewhere in Italy' by Reid Waltman and Robert Coalter. A story of B-24 Liberators and the young men who flew them. Frightening, Cold. Deadly ...

Ty Brock and Kirby Kendall seemed destined to never see each other again Destiny changed its mind. Months later they had run into each other several times by chance. After Ty nursed Kirby back to health after a horrific car accident, the two unexpectedly and against all odds began having feelings for one another. Their new bond was met with downright rage from their best friends, Hattie Fitzpatrick and McKenzie Johnson, the latter having been the wife of Chase Johnson and Kirby's older brother and the man whose life and baseball career had been forever changed via a fastball to the head from fellow budding baseball star, Ty Brock. After enduring great times and bad, months after Kirby's accident, it was evident there was more than friendship. With the aid of Ty's first psychologist and brilliant doctor Jed Epstein, Ty and Kirby pursued their feelings and after a time they had had it with their friends' frustration and blatant hatred towards the new "couple." They gathered the people closest to them for a sit down chat. The conversation was one sided as Ty and Kirby told the story of how they had fallen in love. Along the way random acts of kindness erupted around them, coming from those they least expected along with their own random acts. Would those acts drive them closer together?Would their relationship implode despite their strong feelings as the tension between friends would take first priority? And, most importantly, could Ty and Kirby dictate their love or would animosity eventually tear them apart? Little did they realize at the time that a simple trip to the dentist would alter their lives forever.

Entering a church and listening to a Sunday sermon for the first time can be like picking up a good novel but starting from the middle of the book. Growing in a new subject can be difficult, and the learning curve may seem enormous. The starting point is key. This is the journey I hope to take with you, starting from the beginning to help bring understanding to Christianity's foundational truths, teachings, structure, and its written handbook-the Bible. Think of this as your personal guidebook on the subject of Christianity.Book ExcerptThe primary readers of this book will be those that are looking for ways to understand their faith, whether new to the subject or someone that has been at it for a while or someone looking at Christianity to see what it is all about. Either way, the result will be you end up with foundational knowledge on the subject and the next time you walk into a situation where Christian doctrine or teaching is part of the discussion; you will not feel out of the loop; you will not feel you just walked into the middle of that conversation but will be a little more confident in joining in the conversation. It is possible you might find yourself knowing a little more than the one standing next to you for the first time, perhaps to where you could help them along their spiritual journey. p. 12

Made in the Image of God is good resource material for supplementing studies in: Bible, Theology, Apologetics, Anthropology, Metaphysics or Philosophy of Religion.Book Excerpts"As I stated before, God never asks us to do anything that does not take place within the Godhead. Remember the words in Scripture? "Children, obey your parents" (Ephesians 6:1), or "Wives, submit yourself to your husbands" (Ephesians 5:22, KJV), or "Husbands, love your wives" (Ephesians 5:25). These concepts come from God's personal examples, and more specifically, the Father's love for the Son and Jesus' submission to the Father." p. 90"In reality, mankind is still metaphysically in God's likeness, but God's image in mankind has been altered by sin. We can no longer duplicate or reflect God's attitudes as we once could do. That is, we can no longer be holy as God is holy. Our morality has been altered and no longer has the capability to duplicate or reflect God's image. So what is the answer? Can this image be repaired or made whole again? The answer is, YES Mankind can be made into a new creature in Christ Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:17), and the image mankind once displayed can be restored once again." p. 149
