The Eurasian beaver was near extinction at the start of the twentieth century, hunted across Europe for its fur, meat and castoreum. But now the beaver is on the brink of a comeback, with wild beaver populations, licensed and unlicensed, emerging all over Britain. Their tree felling and dam building behaviours coupled with a suite of other activities create a wealth of living opportunities that are exploited by a range of other species. Numerous scientific studies demonstrate that beaver-generated living environments that are much richer in terms of both biodiversity and biomass than wetland environments from which they are absent. Emerging contemporary studies indicate clearly that the landscapes they create can afford sustainable, cost-effective remedies for water retention, flood alleviation, silt and chemical capture. Beaver activities, especially in highly modified environments, may be challenging to certain land use activities and landowners. Many trialled and tested methods to mitigate against these impacts, including a wide range of non-lethal management techniques, are regularly implemented across Europe and North America. Many of these techniques will be new to people, especially in areas where beavers are newly re-establishing. This handbook serves to discuss both the benefits and challenges in living with this species, and collates the wide range of techniques that can be implemented to mitigate any negative impacts. The authors of this handbook are all beaver experts and together they have a broad range of scientific knowledge and practical experience regarding the ecology, captive husbandry, veterinary science, pathology, reintroduction and management of beavers in both continental Europe and Britain.

Här finns också en samling texter om stadsplanering, arkitektur, konst och grannskapsdemokrati och en dokumentation av Bomassan en självorganiserande bomässa i södra Stockholm.Gubbängsutredningen fortsätter presenterar en undersökning av konstnärer, designer, arkitekter aktivister, grannar och forskare. Kanske kan man se den som en övning i att tänka om staden. Innehållet bygger på material som utformades under Bomassan, en invånardriven bomässa i Hökarängen.Bomassan var en researchövning som utforskade frågor kring stadsplanering, förtätning, lokaldemokrati, medborgardialoger och sociala konstpraktiker. Centralt för Bomassan är konsten och konstnärens roll i att aktivt vara med och forma dessa frågor. Projektet bestod av föreläsningar, middagsbjudningar, möten, konstnärliga stadsvandringar, utställningar och mycket annat, som genomfördes på en rad olika platser i Söderort, Stockholm, i lokala föreningslokaler, hemmiljöer samt i offentliga konstsammanhang. Centralt för Bomassan var att främja konstnärliga praktiker som uppmuntrar till socialt engagemang, bland annat genom att behandla sociala situationer (till exempel middagar) som en konstform i sig själv, som i sin tur utvecklar material för utställningar, event och presentationer.Titeln Gubbängsutredningen fortsätter anspelar på Gubbängstävlingen 1933, vilken ligger till grund för hur stadsdelarna Gubbängen och Hökarängen i södra Stockholm är utformade. Grannskapen byggdes som en testyta för framtidens stad. Idag vittnar grannskapen om en social bostadshistoria där man ser spår av gemensamhetsytor som över tid övergått till vinstgivande privata verksamheter.Gubbängsutredningen fortsätter undersöker framtidens stad och erbjuder dig verktyg för att tillsammans med dina grannar organisera er stadsdel.

Vi behöver se oss själva för de unika, starka, kreativa och skapande individer som vi innerst inne är. Vi behöver leva mer som vi lär. Det är så väldigt många som vacklar i sin tilltro till sig själva och som tror att de måste passa in i ett särskilt mönster för att duga som de är. Om man är det minsta lilla annorlunda så tror man ofta att man inte är lika bra. Vi måste börja se på oss själva som starka, energifyllda, kreativa skapare som innerst inne besitter förmågan att förflytta berg. Det kan vi, om vi bara utgår från vårt hjärtas centrum och ger oss själva möjligheten att tro på oss själva och att vi kan. Framför allt måste vi börja inse att ensam inte är stark och istället lära oss att samarbeta mer. Vi behöver alla varandra, för det är i den djupaste sorg och de svåraste livsvalen som vi kommer att upptäcka vilka vi är och förmågan vi bär inom oss, för att till slut skapa oss det liv vi drömmer om. Vi bär alla nycklarna och verktygen inom oss.
