In May 1969, Timothy Leary's conviction for possession of marihuana was overturned by the U.S Supreme Court. He had been sentenced to 30-years imprisonment and fined $40,000 for less than a quarter of an ounce. As a result of a campaign on behalf of three small children, the UK Government finally passed legislation in November 2018, which allowed the use of cannabis-based products for medicinal purposes. This book examines those cases and the reefer madness campaign of the 1930's, Nixon's war on drugs, the United Nations efforts to impose world-wide prohibition, dagga smoking in 19th century South Africa, the Yarkand charas trade and the Indian Hemp Commission of 1893. It also considers studies carried out by the U.S military in the Panama Canal Zone, the Shafer Commission, the Le Dain Commission and the Baroness Wooten report of 1968. It also explores the latest medical research, investigating its use as an effective treatment for a wide variety of illnesses, as well as the dangers associated with specialised strains of skunk. It begins where it should, acknowledging its social and spiritual roots in India, where it has been used for thousands of years, as well as its role in Jamaica, where it has been adopted by those who follow the Rastafari faith. There is no doubt that this remarkable plant has an important role to play in 21st century medicine, our only challenge is to find even more ways to use it, and to insist that governments allow us to do so. Cannabis - A Study of its History, Prohibition and Use, is the most up to date, comprehensive guide available today.

Wittgenstein among the Sciences

Wittgenstein among the Sciences

Rupert Read; Edited by Simon Summers

Engaging with the question of the extent to which the so-called human, economic or social sciences are actually sciences, this book moves away from the search for a criterion or definition that will allow us to sharply distinguish the scientific from the non-scientific. Instead, the book favours the pursuit of clarity with regard to the various enterprises undertaken by human beings, with a view to dissolving the felt need for such a demarcation. In other words, Read pursues a 'therapeutic' approach to the issue of the status and nature of these subjects. Discussing the work of Kuhn, Winch and Wittgenstein in relation to fundamental question of methodology, 'Wittgenstein among the Sciences' undertakes an examination of the nature of (natural) science itself, in the light of which a series of successive cases of putatively scientific disciplines are analysed. A novel and significant contribution to social science methodology and the philosophy of science and 'the human sciences', this book will be of interest to social scientists and philosophers, as well as to psychiatrists, economists and cognitive scientists.
