When Flemish engraver and publisher Theodore de Bry issued the first volume of his America series in 1590, the New World was, for most Europeans, truly novel. Gleaned from the travel accounts of adventurers like Thomas Harriot, Sir Francis Drake, and Sir Walter Raleigh, De Bry’s magnificent engravings brought the new continent and its inhabitants to an enraptured audience across the Atlantic. From “Virginia” (today’s North Carolina) and Florida through Central America and down into Patagonia, the first nine volumes of America depict scenery and encounters between native Americans and Europeans, revealing the latter’s perceptions of the former. Portrayals of European discovery and native American customs were based on the explorers’ reports as well as De Bry’s own imagination, he himself never having traveled to the New World. Although based in Frankfurt, De Bry laid the foundations of the series while in London, collaborating with artists John White and Jacques Le Moyne, whose original watercolors he adapted for the opening two volumes. With his sons, De Bry formed a family enterprise known for exquisite copper engravings and high-quality illustrations unrivaled in their mastery. The legacy of America is profound, coloring Europe’s earliest visions of the Atlantic world. Countless European illustrations would, throughout the following centuries, draw inspiration from the spectacular collection. TASCHEN’s edition pays homage to De Bry’s finesse, reprinting all 218 plates from the first nine volumes alongside their respective frontispieces and continental maps. Volumes I to VI are based on the original hand-colored editions held at the John Hay and John Carter Brown Libraries at Brown University in Providence; volumes VII to IX are from the Staats- und Stadtbibliothek in Augsburg, Germany.Exceptionally rare even at the time of their completion, De Bry’s hand-colored America can finally be admired by all, in XXL resolution.

Theodore Roosevelt's Letters to His Children
Most of the letters in this book were written by Theodore Roosevelt to his children during a period of more than twenty years. A few others are included which he wrote to friends or relatives about the children. He began to write to them in their early childhood, and continued to do so regularly till they reached maturity. Whenever he was separated from them, in the Spanish War, or on a hunting trip, or because they were at school, he sent them these messages of constant thought and love, for they were never for a moment out of his mind and heart. Long before they were able to read he sent them what they called "picture letters," with crude drawings of his own illustrations of the written text, drawings precisely adapted to the childish imagination and intelligence. That the little recipients cherished these delightful missives is shown by the tender care with which they preserved them from destruction. They are in good condition after many years of loving usage. A few of them are reproduced on these pages—written at different periods as each new child appeared in the household.
Theodore Metochites' Sententious notes : Semeioseis gnomikai 61-70 & 72-81 - a critical edition with introduction, translation, notes, and indexes
This volume contains a critical edition, with an English translation and notes, of 20 chapters of the Semeioseis gnomikai ("Sententious notes") of the Byzantine statesman Theodore Metochites (1270-1332). The introduction gives an extensive, partly new, description and assessment of the manuscripts as physical objects and in their relationship to each other. The manuscripts discussed, and used in the edition, are the Par. gr. 2003 (P) and Marc. gr. 532 (M), both of the fourteenth century, and, wherever M is illegible, the Scor. gr. 248 (E), a sixteenth-century copy of M. In the edition, the reading of P (including the corrections by the main copyist, Michael Klostomalles, as well as a manus secunda) is generally adopted as the authoritative text. The volume concludes with a bibliography, an index of passages, and an index of names. The discussion in the essays touches upon several subjects, more or less related to each other. Among these are the ignorance of man and the difficulty to know anything, and the moral side of seeking an active life as opposed to "living hidden".

Theodore Roosevelt presided over the United States as president from 1901 to 1912. For the Republican and Progressive parties, he held the position of party leader. In addition to being a skilled historian, naturalist, explorer, hunter, and author, he was a fantastic performer. Teddy Roosevelt was a sickly youngster who battled asthma and other illnesses before becoming the Bull Moose. Teddy entered politics after earning his Harvard degree, but that didn't stop him from producing The Naval War of 1812 in 1882, which helped him establish himself as a respected author and historian. Young Teddy was given the President after McKinley's murder in 1901.Despite losing the election, the incident appropriately reflected Teddy's reputation as a men's man.Roosevelt's health rapidly deteriorated, and he passed away in 1919, having established himself as an American legend. Teddy is known today for his accomplishments as an explorer, hunter, novelist, soldier, president, and safari adventurer, which collectively form a singular reputation. Get the truth from the Moose about Teddy's life.
