Oppaan tavoitteena on auttaa hotelli- ja ravintola-alan ammattilaisia tunnistamaan työympäristönsä paloturvallisuusriskit, estämään jo ennalta tulipalojen syttyminen sekä omaksumaan oikeat toimintamallit onnettumuustilanteissa. Oppaan kirjoittaja Päivi Seppä on työskennellyt ravintola-alalla eri tehtävissä yhteensä kaksikymmentä vuotta. Työssä hankitut kokemukset ovat ohjanneet tämän oppaan syntymistä yhdessä pelastusalan ammatilaisten rautaisen kokemuksen kanssa.
In this book, Gina Marchetti explores the way this example of Hong Kong's cinematic eclecticism has crossed borders as a story, a commercial product and a work of art; and has had an undeniable impact on current Hong Kong cinema.
A slightly confused and muddled mummy toad can’t find a suitable place to lay her precious toad-spawn! She spies an over-flowing drain and there, finally lays her eggs. After a while, the drain becomes laden with bouncy, bulging toad-spawn and hundreds of tiny tadpoles are born! All seem excited with life and their new home, except for one little tadpole… Alan is not happy! The drain is too dirty, cramped and noisy… all the things he can’t stand, so while waiting for his legs, arms and lungs to develop, he forms a plan to escape to his own quiet, clean home. The only problem is he doesn’t know where it is yet? As soon as he is big enough, he packs his suitcase and begins his journey to find a new place of his own…
The work of memory researchers Alan Baddeley and Graham Hitch is a prime example of the ways in which good critical thinkers approach questions and the problems they raise. In the 1960s, researchers into human memory began to understand memory as comprising not one, but two systems. The first was a short-term system handling information for mere seconds. The second was a long-term system capable of managing information indefinitely. They also discovered, however, that short-term memory was not simply a ‘filing cabinet,’ as many had thought, but was actively working on cognitive – or mental – tasks. This is how the phrase “working memory” developed. The hypothesis remained unproven, however, presenting Baddeley and Hitch with the problem of working out how to produce definitive evidence that short term memory was a working system that actively manipulated and processed information. They responded by designing a series of ten experiments aimed at showing just this – presenting the results in their 1974 article, ‘Working memory.’ The research was a masterpiece of problem-solving that proved revelatory. The authors not only generated new solutions and made sound decisions between alternative possibilities – they also showed that short-term memory is indeed an active system responsible for information processing and managing, while also influencing attention, reasoning, reading comprehension and learning. While their work has since been refined by others, Baddeley and Hitch’s problem-solving approach helped to create the dominant understanding of working memory that underpins psychological research throughout the world today.
Dr Alan J Hoffman is a pioneer in linear programming, combinatorial optimization, and the study of graph spectra. In his principal research interests, which include the fields of linear inequalities, combinatorics, and matrix theory, he and his collaborators have contributed fundamental concepts and theorems, many of which bear their names. This volume of Dr Hoffman's selected papers is divided into seven sections: geometry; combinatorics; matrix inequalities and eigenvalues; linear inequalities and linear programming; combinatorial optimization; greedy algorithms; graph spectra. Dr Hoffman has supplied background commentary and anecdotal remarks for each of the selected papers. He has also provided autobiographical notes showing how he chose mathematics as his profession, and the influences and motivations which shaped his career.

Searching for a prize ship that has been stolen along with its crew from war-stricken 1799 Dominica, captain Alan Lewrie finds himself in the infamous pirate waters off of New Orleans and is forced to relinquish his command in order to identify the thieves. By the author of Havoc's Sword. Reprint. 15,000 first printing.
In 1799, following the success of The Captain's Vengeance, Captain Alan Lewrie of the British Royal Navy and his misfit crew are sent south, where he and the convoy they have been escorting encounter a circus ship and his most dangerous battle ever. Reprint. 15,000 first printing.
Outlines the Bletchley Park mathematician's efforts to launch artificial intelligence innovations, describing his thwarted attempts to gain support for a programmable calculating machine, his contributions to cracking the Nazi Enigma code during World War II, and how the revelation of his homosexuality led to his tragic imprisonment and suicide. Reprint.
A study of our national government and character follows the author's concern about the effect of majority rule on the rights of individuals and provides insight into the rewards and responsibilities of a democratic government.
Alan Moore, the idiosyncratic, controversial and often shocking writer of such works as Watchmen, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and V for Vendetta, remains a benchmark for readers of comics and graphic novels. This collection investigates the political, social, cultural, and sexual ideologies that emerge from his seminal work, Lost Girls, and demonstrates how these ideologies relate to his larger body of work. Framed by Moore's insistence upon deconstructing the myth of the superhero, each essay attends to the form and content of Moore's comics under the rubric of his pervasive metaphor of the "politics of sexuality/the sexing of politics."
Alan Graham's accomplishments over a botanical career that spans six decades can be measured by the approximately 250 papers and books that he has published during this time; however, equally significant are his 38 years of teaching at Kent State University and his subsequent 12 years as Research Associate at the Missouri Botanical Garden. This festschrift contains 14 papers prepared by 56 of Alan's friends and colleagues representing 15 nationalities and working in 27 institutions. The participants do not exhaust the list of people who have collaborated with Alan throughout his long and productive scientific career, or the many students who received their degree under Alan Graham, but the papers they have contributed represent those fields in which Alan has had the greatest impact through his work. Taken together, they not only advance knowledge but also demonstrate closely that the efforts of Alan Graham during the course of his career will carry on for centuries in the future as we find greater clarity and develop even more robust hypotheses of the evolution of the vegetation of the Americas.
