Jahrhundert als vergangene Epoche darstellen. Das Vergangene wird radikaler als in jedem Film davor als 'tot' pr sentiert. Gleichzeitig oder wohl auch deswegen wurde ein bis dahin nie da gewesener Aufwand betrieben, um diese Epoche in allen Details originalgetreu nachzustellen.1 "Barry Lyndon" wird in der Literatur als "Thematisch reichhaltig und formal wagemutig" sowie "auf nahezu jedem Gebiet experimentell" beschrieben.2 Thema dieser Arbeit soll die Frage sein, inwieweit Kamera, Handlung und Erz hlstruktur des Filmes eine Einheit bilden und in welchen Punkten sie einander diametral gegen berstehen. Es soll untersucht werden, mit welchen Mitteln Kubrick arbeitet, um sein mit diesem Film gestecktes Ziel zu erreichen. Daf r werde ich einige pr gnante und aussagekr ftige Szenen aus dem Film herausgreifen und an diesen obige Fragen sowie weitere, die sich im Verlauf der Abhandlung ergeben, analysieren. Kubrick legt viel Wert darauf, die emotionale Distanz des Zuschauers gegen ber Barrys Schicksal aufrechtzuerhalten. Dies zeigt sich schon in der Eingangsszene, die ein Duell aus der Ferne zeigt. Der Erz hler nimmt den Bildern bereits den Ausgang der Szene vorweg, wodurch einerseits jede Spannung eliminiert und andererseits sofort der Eindruck der Unvermeidlichkeit und Abgeschlossenheit erzeugt wird.3 Ein weiterer Punkt, der Kubricks Wahl des Stoffes begr nden k nnte, w re dessen pers nliches Interesse an der Epoche der Aufkl rung. Diese ra schien eine gewisse Faszination auf ihn auszu ben aufgrund ihrer totalen Verhaftung in den Prinzipien der reinen Vernunft, was aber gleichzeitig wohl f r ihn eine gewisse Ern chterung mit sich brachte4. This Festschrift had its origins in a conference called SimonFest held at Caltech, March 27-31, 2006, to honor Barry Simon's 60th birthday. It is not a proceedings volume in the usual sense since the emphasis of the majority of the contributions is on reviews of the state of the art of certain fields, with particular focus on recent developments and open problems. The bulk of the articles in this Festschrift are of this survey form, and a few review Simon's contributions to a particular area. Part 1 contains surveys in the areas of Quantum Field Theory, Statistical Mechanics, Nonrelativistic Two-Body and $N$-Body Quantum Systems, Resonances, Quantum Mechanics with Electric and Magnetic Fields, and the Semiclassical Limit. Part 2 contains surveys in the areas of Random and Ergodic Schrodinger Operators, Singular Continuous Spectrum, Orthogonal Polynomials, and Inverse Spectral Theory. In several cases, this collection of surveys portrays both the history of a subject and its current state of the art.
