This collection of essays by a range of international, multidisciplinary scholars explores the financial history, social significance, and cultural meanings of the theft, starting in 1933, of assets owned by German Jews. Despite the fraught topic and the ongoing legal discussions, the subject has not received much scholarly attention until now. This volume offers a much needed contribution to our understanding of the history of the period and the acts. The essays examine the confiscatory taxation of Jewish property, the looting of art and confiscation of gold, the role of German freight forwarders in property theft, salesmen and dispossession in the retail world, theft from the elderly, and the complicity of the banking industry, as well as the reach of the practice beyond German borders.
This is the first of a two-volume collection of the official papers of the 17th-century governor of New York, Thomas Dongan. Published as part of the ""New York Historical Manuscript Series"", these documents date from a period when the Dutch played a major role in building the New World.
This volume makes available critical documents from a period of time when the Dutch played a major role in building the New World. The documents cover a number of topics, including religious issues, the General Assembly and its legal system, the council and courts, and Indian and French relations.
Jacob Leisler has been more an icon in historical writing than a person. That the icon has served very different groups over the centuries only shows that is has had little to do with the real person. In his own century he was both the fanatical and villainous despot and the martyred hero. In later times he was a forerunner of American democracy, and a symbol of colonial rebelliousness. He has also been pilloried in the Catholic press, not without justification, although Catholics were not among those treated most harshly during his administration. To Marxist theoreticians he was a voice for the proletariat; to National Socialist propagandists he was a German martyr. In short, much that has been written about Leisler has had to do with the interests of various groups and causes, many of them unrelated, or only distantly related, to anything happening in Leisler's time. It is only today that articles and books are beginning to appear in which his career is examined dispassionately. Many of the untruths are so ingrained that one must almost begin by saying what is not true before going on to discuss what is true about Leisler. Suffice it to say that, despite a long tradition of popular writing that he was base-born, resentful of being outside the mainstream of colonial life and commerce, and failing in his enterprises, he none of these. For much of our enlightenment we are indebted to the research by David William Voorhees, who has assembled copies of several thousand documents from private institutions and government archives from throughout Europe and North America.
Cartilage defects affect patients of all age groups. Surgeons, teamdoctors, general practitioners and physiotherapists alike are expected to provide adequate care. Only individual treatment plans combining a well balanced choice of various options will be successful. Background knowledge, operative and non-operative therapies are described in concise chapters: Articular cartilage biology - Diagnostics - Surgical techniques - Symptomatic and alternative medications - Physiotherapy. Diagnostic findings and surgical procedures are generously illustrated by aquarelles and colour photographs. Recommendations for additional reading, description of important clinical scoring systems and a listing of analytic tools are added for further information.

The information flow about crises and conflicts is highly selective, the media only focus on a few major conflicts at a time. Many conflicts are neglected, others soon forgotten after the fighting ends. This book fills the gaps and offers a systematic overview of all crises and conflicts in and among states since 1945 and traces the global trends of conflict development. Based on the broad empirical basis of the Conflict Simulation Model KOSIMO, Pfetsch and Rohloff use an integrated approach to cover many forms and types of political conflicts, both peaceful and violent.
Computational Integration is the first book in over 10 years dedicated to a comprehensive discussion of computational integration methods and the fundamental mathematical principles they are based on. It gives special coverage of many recent developments, such as parallel integration algorithms, that have not yet been coherently presented in any other textbook. It also attempts to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge about and practical application of computational integration by providing references to and descriptions of numerous relevant software products. This survey covers a wide range of topics fundamental to calculating integrals on computer systems and discusses both the theoretical and computational aspects of numerical and symbolic methods. It includes extensive sections on one- and multidimensional integration formulas, like polynomial, number-theoretic, and pseudorandom formulas, and deals with issues concerning the construction of numerical integration algorithms, including error estimation, discretization refinement, and convergence acceleration.Individual chapters are dedicated to parallel integration algorithms, the assessment of numerical integration software, and numerical methods tailored to particular kinds of integration problems involving, for instance, oscillatory or singular integrands.

Semiconductor equipment modeling has in recent years become a field of great interest, because it offers the potential to support development and optimization of manufacturing equipment and hence reduce the cost and improve the quality of the reactors. This book is the result of two parallel lines of research dealing with the same subject - Modeling of Tungsten CVD processes -, which were per formed independently under very different boundary conditions. On the one side, Chris Kleijn, working in an academic research environment, was able to go deep enough into the subject to laya solid foundation and prove the validity of all the assumptions made in his work. On the other side, Christoph Werner, working in the context of an industrial research lab, was able to closely interact with manufacturing and development engineers in a modern submicron semiconductor processing line. Because of these different approaches, the informal collaboration during the course of the projects proved to be extremely helpful to both sides, even though - or perhaps because - different computer codes, different CVD reactors and also slightly different models were used. In spite of the inconsistencies which might arise from this double approach, we feel that the presentation of both sets of results in one book will be very useful for people working in similar projects.
In 1966, a paper entitled "On the formation of a novel adenylylic compound by enzymatic extracts of liver nuclei" from Paul Mandel's laboratory in Strasbourg, France, planted the seed for a rapidly growing new field of biological research focusing on ADP-ribosylation reactions. The development of this field over the past 2 decades reflects very much a modern trend of biological research. As more detailed knowledge accumulates, enigmatic phenomena turn into concepts which create their own enigmata. This process tends to favor the development of multiple, seemingly disconnected, research lines until simplicity emerges from chaos and unifying concepts substitute for controversy. It appears that the field of ADP-ribosylation reactions has not yet attained this latter stage. For example, with the identification of two different classes of ADP-ribosylation reactions, i.e., mono-ADP-ribosyla tion and poly-ADP-ribosylation reactions, the field split very early into two separate branches of research. With the present volume, we have divided the task of reviewing these two classes of ADP ribosylation accordingly, although their coexistence in eukaryotes may involve a closer functional linkage than hitherto recognized.
The field of nucleic acids has grown to such a tremendeous size that it is impossible to include all publications concerning the chemistry and biological role of nucleic acids in an article of the length presented in this "Volume. Therefore, it is necessary to select the most important contributions and those not included "in well-known reviews. In many cases reference is made only to the authors who summarized their specialized field in chapters of the three volumes of "The Nucleic Acids" (edB. E. CHARGAFF and J. N. DAVIDSON, Acad. Press, New York 1955 and 19(0) or to the "Nucleic Acid Outlines" (V. R. POTTER, Burgess Publishing Comp. Minneapolis), where further literature and more detailed discussions may be found. Facts and theories will be dealt with, but not lists of references. Therefore it is not possible to follow in all cases the historical development of an idea and to admowledge all publications which might be important and inter esting from another point of view. Very little is mentioned about methods in the field of nucleic acids.
Marc-R. "

The diverse contributors to this issue of Plough Quarterly focus on what it means to be a peacemaker. Peacemaking, they show, is a riskier and more ambitious undertaking than we may have imagined. Today we must wage peace where thousands of children are being murdered by militias or forced to fight as soldiers. We need peacemakers in divided cities from Paris to Baltimore, peacemakers in a culture with little tolerance for Christian witness, and peacemakers in churches riven by ideological fights and petty grudges, not to mention making peace with our spouses, and with ourselves. Hear from active peacemakers on the frontlines of these battles and explore insights on peacemaking from Thomas Merton, Dorothy Day, Badshah Khan, Jeannette Rankin, Charles Spurgeon, André Trocmé, Peace Pilgrim, Albert Schweitzer, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Eberhard Arnold. And as always, Plough Quarterly includes world-class art by the likes of Marc Chagall, Egon Schiele, Lisa Toth, Carl Larsson, Ben Shahn, Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis, Paul Klee, Antonello da Messina, and others. Plough Quarterly features stories, ideas, and culture for people eager to put their faith into action. Each issue brings you in-depth articles, interviews, fiction, poetry, book reviews, and art to help you put Jesus’ message into practice and find common cause with others.
