'raw content is a work of dark, aching beauty' Helen Jukes, author of Mother Animal'A stunning mix of horror and tenderness, love and despair. It's rare to see such a raw and real account of early motherhood' Kirsty Logan, author of The Unfamiliar: A Queer Motherhood Memoir'A brooding and bruising psychodrama about the anxieties of 21st century motherhood, that links the primal potency of the female body with the northern landscape's elemental power' Stu Hennigan, author of Ghost Signs'My childhood was a map marked with danger zones . . . Me and my sister were cared for. We were bathed and fed and clothed. But, as with many children, we couldn't have told you if we were loved. Our experience of care came in the form of a warning'Grace's work requires her to be careful. She spends her days reading and editing legal case files, making sure the latest judgments are published as quickly and accurately as possible. But outside of her work, Grace is not a careful person. Her father's history as a police officer working across an infamous case shadows her life, as does the violent history entrenched across the Colne Valley landscape of her childhood, and her fears often surface as recklessness. When Grace becomes unexpectedly pregnant, she tries to accommodate her boyfriend and the prospect of the baby in her life. But after the relief and strange joy of the birth, Grace starts to imagine all sorts of terrible injuries and deaths befalling her child. The steep stairs to her apartment, the kitchen scissors, a boiling kettle all suddenly hold visceral and overwhelming potential for disaster. The baby's vulnerability terrifies her: fault-lines in her relationship begin to show, and her family history and repressed memories of violence break to the surface.Tender, gripping and life-affirming, raw content tells the story of a woman grappling with a new form of love that feels like a disaster.

Media companies are at a crossroads: join the digital evolution of the so-called cloud computing or - almost certainly - disappear. Cloud computing seems to be hype, a buzzword like so many in the world of technology and new media. Although cloud computing is service oriented, the reality is that it comprises a fundamental change, a revolution that compares with the rise of the PC. Companies will have to move in time if they want to survive. The introduction of new technologies by traditional media companies occurs while the underlying principles of the IT technologies are changing towards cloud computing. Conversely, new media companies use cloud computing to explore the creation of alternative business models. The concurrence of these circumstances creates stress within the media industry. The adoption of cloud computing can be a response to the challenges within the media industry.
Form-Content Relationship in Beethoven's String Quartet in C-Sharp Minor, Opus 131

Form-Content Relationship in Beethoven's String Quartet in C-Sharp Minor, Opus 131

In Charles Rosen's landmark analysis of Beethoven's "Hammerklavier" Sonata, Opus 106, Rosen revealed Beethoven as the progenitor of a type of musical structure that may be described as "form-content relationship". In the case of the Opus 106 it is the pervasive use of chains of melodic descending-thirds that organizes the motivic and melodic content as well as the larger structural elements of the work, resulting in an unprecedented organicism. This phenomenon of form-content relationship can be found in the Piano Sonata Opus 110 and reaches its furthest development in the String Quartet in C-sharp Minor, Opus 131. Whereas the Hammerklavier's structure is derived from a short motive, that of the Opus 131 may be said to be based on an idea, the Urph nomen (primal phenomenon), although at one important point in the work this idea is manifested in terms of a specific musical motif. This study is a detailed explication of the structure of Beethoven's Opus 131 and also explores the possible genesis of the work in terms of Goethe's morphological theories and Schelling's transcendental idealism.

Winner, 2021 Katherine Singer Kovács Book Award, given by the Society for Cinema and Media Studies Winner, 2021 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards for Best Academic/Scholarly Work Honorable Mention, 2021 Harry Shaw and Katrina Hazzard-Donald Award for Outstanding Work in African-American Popular Culture Studies, given by the Popular Culture Association Winner, 2020 Charles Hatfield Book Prize, given by the Comic Studies Society Traces the history of racial caricature and the ways that Black cartoonists have turned this visual grammar on its head Revealing the long aesthetic tradition of African American cartoonists who have made use of racist caricature as a black diasporic art practice, Rebecca Wanzo demonstrates how these artists have resisted histories of visual imperialism and their legacies. Moving beyond binaries of positive and negative representation, many black cartoonists have used caricatures to criticize constructions of ideal citizenship in the United States, as well as the alienation of African Americans from such imaginaries. The Content of Our Caricature urges readers to recognize how the wide circulation of comic and cartoon art contributes to a common language of both national belonging and exclusion in the United States. Historically, white artists have rendered white caricatures as virtuous representations of American identity, while their caricatures of African Americans are excluded from these kinds of idealized discourses. Employing a rich illustration program of color and black-and-white reproductions, Wanzo explores the works of artists such as Sam Milai, Larry Fuller, Richard "Grass" Green, Brumsic Brandon Jr., Jennifer Cruté, Aaron McGruder, Kyle Baker, Ollie Harrington, and George Herriman, all of whom negotiate and navigate this troublesome history of caricature. The Content of Our Caricature arrives at a gateway to understanding how a visual grammar of citizenship, and hence American identity itself, has been constructed.

In recent years visual devices have proliferated, from the massive high-resolution, high-contrast screens to the tiny ones on mobile phones, with their limited dynamic range and color gamut. The wide variety of screens on which content may be viewed creates a challenge for developers. Adapting visual content for optimized viewing on all devices is called retargeting. This is the first book to provide a holistic view of the subject, thoroughly reviewing and analyzing the many techniques that have been developed for retargeting along dimensions such as color gamut, dynamic range, and spatial resolution.
