Blurred Lines of Responsibility and Accountability, 94
Mega-sporting events (MSEs), like the FIFA World Cup or the Olympic and Paralympic Games, are prestigious international events that attract attention in every part of the world. In the last two decades, it became increasingly clear that such events can lead to adverse human rights implications. Notable examples include cases of forced evictions of local communities, violent repressions of protests around MSE venues, and the exploitation of both migrant and non-migrant workers on event-related construction sites. This book discusses how delivering an MSE can impact a whole range of human rights, highlighting the challenges in dealing with cases of MSE-related human rights abuses and establishing legal responsibility. More specifically, it analyses the shortcomings of international human rights law and international law of responsibility in dealing with the complex governance system of MSEs, which is based on the involvement of a mix of national, international, private and public actors and blurs the lines of responsibility and accountability. As a result, the identification of responsible actors, the establishment of their responsibility, and the access to remedies for those affected are significantly complicated. To address these challenges, this book proposes a shared responsibility approach to the cases at hand, suggesting that actors involved in MSE delivery would share legal responsibility to the extent that they made a relevant contribution to an outcome that presents a human rights violation, and explores how this approach can work in theory and practice.
Der Neolithische Fundplatz Hamburg-Curslack 55
A report on the Neolithic settlement site of Curslak (Hamburg: c. 4100/4000 - 2900/2800 cal BC). The main focus of the analysis is the cultural classification of the TRB (Funnel Beaker) finds and the relationship of the material with immigrants from the Altmark region. This work is a valuable contribution to present-day understanding of the history of the area and its finds; it is also the first typological presentation of Funnel Beaker material. Additionally it places the evidence in the broader context of the Funnel Beaker culture of northern Germany.

The Role of France in the Rwandan Genocide

The Role of France in the Rwandan Genocide

Daniela Kroslak

After the Holocaust, the victorious Allies pledged 'Never Again' to genocide. This promise, enshrined in the UN Convention on Genocide, stipulates a responsibility to try and prevent genocide or mitigate the suffering of its victims in the future. The book analyses what this responsibility might entail by asking the following questions: To what extent can external actors, such as the French Government, be held responsible for not preventing or not suppressing genocide, and how can this responsibility be evaluated? Why almost fifty years after the Genocide Convention did outsiders remain passive whilst Hutu extremists perpetrated genocide against the Tutsi minority and Hutu moderates in Rwanda? How can French government responsibility be evaluated in the light of its actions/inaction? What was France's role? The book explores the historical and contextual background of the Rwandan genocide and French involvement in Africa, and then elaborates three key themes: the extent of French government's information about the preparation of the genocide and its awareness of the scale of the potential disaster; the degree of involvement by the French government during and before the genocide; and the level of French diplomatic and military capability to halt or suppress both the preparations for genocide and the genocide itself. "The Role of France in the Rwandan Genocide" concludes by drawing the reader's attention to the fact that the 'Never Again' pledge does not only incorporate a duty in terms of prevention and suppression of genocide. It also encompasses responsible policies towards a post-genocidal regime which might use the guilt of previously passive external actors to defend its own atrocities, such as Rwanda's campaign in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Medieval Manuscripts from Wurzburg in the Bodleian Library
The Bodleian Library possesses a significant collection of Latin medieval manuscripts from Germany, most of them acquired and donated by Archbishop Laud in the 1630s. They are precious survivals from the period of the Thirty Years' War. Their significance arises not just from the number of individual manuscripts but from the fact that they represent substantial portions of the libraries of ecclesiastical houses in Wurzburg, Mainz and Eberbach. This book presents a detailed description of the fifty-six manuscripts from Wurzburg in the Bodleian, most of them from the cathedral chapter (the Domstift St. Kilian). The majority date from the ninth century, and are extremely important from a textual and palaeographical point of view: they constitute the most important single library of Carolingian manuscripts in the British Isles. Wurzburg was one of the leading Anglo-Saxon foundations on the continent of Europe, planting cultural roots which are manifested in almost every aspect of the manuscripts themselves. The catalogue provides authoritative and superbly detailed descriptions of these manuscripts in all their aspects, especially their texts - there are many important early copies of the texts of the Church Fathers - and their scripts, some of whose forms are unique to Wurzburg. Detailed attention is also paid to the physical characteristics of the manuscripts, their decoration, binding, and provenance. Each of the manuscripts is illustrated.
Medieval Manuscripts from the Mainz Charterhouse in the Bodleian Library, Oxford
The Bodleian Library is one of the few libraries outside Germany with a substantial number of medieval manuscripts from the German-speaking lands. These manuscripts, most of which were acquired by Archbishop Laud in the 1630s, during the Thirty Years’ War, mainly consist of major groups of codices from ecclesiastical houses in the Rhine-Main area, that is Würzburg, Mainz, and Eberbach. Their potential contribution to the religious and intellectual history of these foundations and to the study of German medieval culture as a whole is immeasurable. This book contains descriptions of over one hundred medieval, manuscripts, mostly Latin, from the Charterhouse St Michael at Mainz, founded in the early 1320s. Dating from the tenth to the fifteenth centuries, they reflect the spirituality and literary interest of the Carthusian order. This is the first major publication on the Mainz Charterhouse manuscript collection. Published in two volumes, it provides authoritative and superbly detailed descriptions, including information about the physical characteristics, decoration, binding, and provenance of the manuscripts. Each manuscript is illustrated.
