There comes a time in the lives of most people when faith and religion come into question. When this time in life approaches, it appears that there are more questions than answers. Why do we have these questions? What is it that we are looking for? Understanding Your Faith is designed for the person who is seeking answers to fundamental questions of the Christian faith in a simple yet thought-provoking format. This book is also designed to be a tool for mentors and leaders to assist seekers and new believers with the faith discovery process. E. Dwayne Cantrell is currently the Pastor of Ministry Development at Pasadena Church in Pasadena, California. He earned a master of arts degree in education from San Jose State University in San Jose, California, and a master of arts degree in theology from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. Dwayne also serves as an administrator at a Christian college preparatory high school in Pasadena. He and his wife Angel are the founders of Unlimited Impact ministries (www.unlimitedimpact.org) and have two children, a son, Jared, and a daughter, Jada.
Silencing White Noise – Six Practices to Overcome Our Inaction on Race
? Publishers Weekly starred review"A superior volume on Christian antiracism."--Publishers WeeklyRacism is omnipresent in American life, both public and private. We are immersed in what prominent faith leader Willie Dwayne Francois III calls white noise--the racist speech, ideas, and policies that lull us into inaction on racial justice. White noise masks racial realities and prevents constructive responses to microaggressions, structural inequality, and overt interpersonal racism. In this book, Francois calls people of all racial backgrounds to take up practices that overcome silence and inaction on race and that advance racial repair. Drawing from his anti-racism curriculum, the Public Love Organizing and Training (PLOT) Project, Francois encourages us to move from a "colorblind" stance of mythic innocence to one that takes an honest account of our national history and acknowledges our complicity in racism as a prelude to anti-racist interventions.Weaving together personal narrative, theology, and history, this book invites us to engage 6 "rhythms of reparative intercession." These are six practices of anti-racism that aim to repair harm by speaking up and "acting up" on behalf of others. Silencing White Noise offers concrete ways to help people wrest free from the dangers of racism and to develop lifelong Christian anti-racist practices.

“This is one of the best books on writing that I've ever read. I couldn't put it down.” —Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow The Sentences That Create Us provides a road map for incarcerated people and their allies to have a thriving writing life behind bars—and shared beyond the walls—that draws on the unique insights of more than fifty contributors, most themselves justice-involved, to offer advice, inspiration and resources. The Sentences That Create Us draws from the unique insights of over fifty justice-involved contributors and their allies to offer inspiration and resources for creating a literary life in prison. Centering in the philosophy that writers in prison can be as vibrant and capable as writers on the outside, and have much to offer readers everywhere, The Sentences That Create Us aims to propel writers in prison to launch their work into the world beyond the walls, while also embracing and supporting the creative community within the walls. The Sentences That Create Us is a comprehensive resource writers can grow with, beginning with the foundations of creative writing. A roster of impressive contributors including Reginald Dwayne Betts (Felon: Poems), Mitchell S. Jackson (Survival Math), Wilbert Rideau (In the Place of Justice) and Piper Kerman (Orange is the New Black), among many others, address working within and around the severe institutional, emotional, psychological and physical limitations of writing prison through compelling first-person narratives. The book’s authors offer pragmatic advice on editing techniques, pathways to publication, writing routines, launching incarcerated-run prison publications and writing groups, lesson plans from prison educators and next-step resources. Threaded throughout the book is the running theme of addressing lived trauma in writing, and writing’s capacity to support an authentic healing journey centered in accountability and restoration. While written towards people in the justice system, this book can serve anyone seeking hard won lessons and inspiration for their own creative—and human—journey. The Sentences That Create Us includes contributions from Alexa Alemanni; Raquel Almazan; Ellen Bass; Reginald Dwayne Betts; Keri Blakinger; Jennifer Bowen; Zeke Caligiuri; Sterling Cunio; Chris Daley; Curtis Dawkins; Emile DeWeaver; Casey Donahue; Ryan Gattis; Eli Hager; Ashley Hamilton, PhD; Kenneth Hartman; Elizabeth Hawes; Randall Horton; Spoon Jackson; Mitchell S. One day while in meditation, I could sense the concern of God by his Spirit as it relates to His kingdom citizens. One major concern of his is that the church, which is built upon the solid rock of the very identity of Jesus Christ his dear Son, has lost its identity. As Jesus taught in his three and a half years of earthly ministry, he spoke of the Kingdom of God. He described to us in parables and clear speech just what the Kingdom is like. In doing so, he put forth the edicts of the King and established in the ears of the hearers, Kingdom Culture and Custom. By way of the death, the burial, and the resurrection of Jesus Christ, we have been made kings and priests in God's Kingdom. However, before we can function as kings, we must learn to function as priests. And before we can function as priests, we must learn our rights and privileges as accepted, beloved, redeemed, adopted, born again sons of the living King, and as love abiding citizens in his Kingdom. My name is Dwayne Michael Coleman Sr. I was born and raised in Gary Indiana, (or as I like to affectionately call it), "Glory Indiana." As a preacher of almost Thirty years, and a pastor of fifteen years, one of my greatest concerns has become that the people of God understand that we are loved abiding citizens in his Kingdom of God. That being said, I believe it also imperative that we understand the customs and the culture of the Kingdom of Godss well. I don't believe that it is like anything that we have heard preached. But hopefully what I have written here in this book will bring insight on how the kingdom of God operates. But more importantly I hope to bring to bear the heart of the King Himself.
