Emanuel Swedenborg begins a journey through Scripture, laying out the inner meaning of the Bible verse by verse. Heopens with the Creation story, describing how each step in the process relates to our growth and development as spiritual people. He traces the inner meaning history of the peoples described in the Bible and connects their story to our own trials and tribulations, showing how the Flood represents the spiritual devastation that urges us to begin our regeneration.

The first major theological work of the Swedish scientist-turned-seer Emanuel Swedenborg, "Secrets of Heaven" is in one sense a traveler s account. It reveals the unseen realms that await beyond death the light, warmth, and harmony of the angelic heavens and the varied darkness of the multitudinous hells. In this second volume, Swedenborg discusses place, distance, and time as it is experienced in the spiritual world. He also describes the ability of spirits to perceive goodness and truth and to know the character of other spirits on first approach. In addition, the work offers a detailed examination of chapters ten through fifteen of Genesis, including the story of the tower of Babel. The analysis contained within "Secrets of Heaven," which covers the books of Genesis and Exodus over the course of fifteen volumes, provides a model for a new way to understand the entire Bible. Prized for both the simplicity of its explanation and the breadth and depth of its vision, Swedenborg s reading of Scripture discloses layer upon layer of inner meaning, all without undermining the power and import of the literal word. To peruse the pages of this work is to make a spiritual journey with one of the most remarkable visionaries the Western world has ever produced. Swedenborg leads us through the unseen realms that await us after death - a world that is both foreign to us and at the same time surprisingly familiar to our deeper consciousness. With his guidance we sense the light, warmth, and harmony of the angelic heavens, as well as the gradations of darkness and the twisted longings of the various hells. Under his instruction we learn why and how the human spirit inevitably seeks its eternal home in one realm or the other. He tells us of his own near-death experience and of the angelic welcome and the process of self-discovery that await us after we die. Swedenborg also guides us through Scripture undermining the power and import of the literal sense, he reveals layer upon layer of meaning within the verses of Genesis and Exodus. From deep within the Bible he uncovers evidence of emotional and mental trials Jesus underwent during his life on earth, which are scarcely hinted at in the surface of Scripture and are unmentioned in history or legend. And perhaps most importantly, he shows us the way home-the path of spiritual renewal and rejuvenation that takes us from wherever we find ourselves now to where our hearts belong.
Mineral Nutrition of Plants

Mineral Nutrition of Plants

Emanuel Epstein; Arnold J. Bloom

Oxford University Press Inc

Published by Sinauer Associates, an imprint of Oxford University Press. Nearly all the chemical elements that make up living things are mineral elements, the ultimate source of which is rock weathered into soil. In the thoroughly revised second edition of Mineral Nutrition of Plants: Principles and Perspectives, Epstein and Bloom explain that plant roots "mine" these nutrient elements from their inorganic substrate and introduce them into the realm of living things. The authors trace the subsequent movement of these nutrients into other plant organs, tissues, cells, and organelles, their biochemical assimilation, and their functions in plant physiology and metabolism. Treatment of these processes extends from molecular biology through global biogeochemistry. The text, illustrated in full color, is accessible both to undergraduate students in plant physiology, agronomy, horticulture, and environmental studies and to researchers in these and other plant biological fields.
Impossible Training

Impossible Training

Over the past century psychoanalysis has gone on to establish training institutes, professional societies, accreditation procedures, and models of education, thus bringing into uneasy alliance all three impossible pursuits. In Impossible Training: A Relational View of Psychoanalytic Education, Emanuel Berman turns his attention to the current status and future prospects of this daunting project. Berman is ideally suited to tackle the impossibility of psychoanalytic education. A graduate of two psychoanalytic institutes, one in Israel and one in America, he has devoted much of his professional life to psychoanalytic education and the organizational issues embedded in it. In Impossible Training, Berman describes the complex emotional and organizational dynamics of psychoanalytic training. Placing these issues within the context of major controversies in psychoanalytic history, he shows how generations of students have either idealized a "proper analytic identity," which evolves into a persecutory ideal, or rebelled against these standards. Are such persecuting and infantilizing trends inherent in analytic training, he asks, or can psychoanalytic education transcend them through changes in its structure and rules? For Berman, the relational and intersubjective trends in contemporary psychoanalysis call for changes in analytic supervision, not least of which is heightened attentiveness to the many relationships that gain expression in the supervisory process. Envisioned in this relational manner, supervision can become a more personal experience, less guarded, and more conducive to the development of a fertile transitional space between supervisor and supervisee. Anchoring his consideration of the present in the controversies of the past, Berman concludes by considering the mission of psychoanalytic educators today: to provide trainees with the resources to cope creatively with the as yet unknown challenges of tomorrow.

This introductory textbook explains how and why probability models are applied to scientific fields such as medicine, biology, physics, oceanography, economics, and psychology to solve problems about stochastic processes. It does not just show how a problem is solved but explains why by formulating questions and first steps in the solutions. Stochastic Processes is ideal for a course aiming to give examples of the wide variety of empirical phenomena for which stochastic processes provide mathematical models. It introduces the methods of probability model building and provides the reader with mathematically sound techniques as well as the ability to further study the theory of stochastic processes. Originally published in 1962, this was the first comprehensive survey of stochastic processes requiring only a minimal background in introductory probability theory and mathematical analysis. Stochastic Processes continues to be unique, with many topics and examples still not discussed in other textbooks. As new fields of applications (such as finance and DNA analysis) become important, researchers will continue to find the fundamental and accessible topics explained in this book essential background for their research.

The Two of Us in Each of Us: Journeying to Wholeness
The purpose of this book is to give us an appetite and or to couase us to know unequivocally the person in whom we excuse from changing when change is needed. We should know that the excuses are lies we tell ourselves to avoid dealing with unpleasant truths about ourselves. Instead of owning up to the truth, we hide behind an excuse. But as long as we find comfort in excuse, we can never grow to our full potential. Hopefully, this book will help us to move beyond excuses to necessary change so that we might develop and mature into all that to God would have us to be.
Distributive Justice and Fair Exchange: How to find and use social standards
The book, Distributive Justice and Fair Exchange, evaluates theories of social justice of major classics of sociology and political science - Max Weber, Emile Durkheim, Karl Marx and Talcott Parsons. Connections are proposed with the ideologies of selfish individualism, egalitarian collectivism, liberal and social democracy. The problem of objectivity in social science is addressed using a method of sociological deconstruction and reconstruction. That includes a de-objectifying understanding of the classics, their de-subjectifying interpretation, re-subjectifying conceptualization and re-objectifying modeling.

Is there life on other worlds?Emanuel Swedenborg, after claiming to converse with spirits from planets both within and without our solar system, concluded that the Infinite God would not create such an enormous undertaking for one world alone, with only one heaven for one race of people. He said: "That there are many worlds, may be evident to every one, from there being so many constellations visible in the universe; and it is known in the learned world that every fixed star is like a sun in its place; for it remains fixed like the sun of our earth in its place . . . Consequently that like the sun of our world, it has round it planets, which are earths; and the reason that these do not appear to our eyes, is their being at such an immense distance, and having only the light of their star, which cannot be reflected again as far as here. For what other purpose is there so great a heaven with so many stars? For the end of the creation of the universe is man, that from man there may be an angelic heaven." n.126]Born in Sweden in 1688, Swedenborg was a scientist, philosopher, theologian, revelator, and mystic best known for his book on the afterlife, Heaven and Hell, and his magnum opus, Arcana Coelestia. He devoted the last twenty-five years of his life to writing works of a spiritual nature and died in 1772.***The Life on Other Worlds Series is a selection of classic accounts of the afterlife and otherworldly life, told by those who are already there or who have been shown glimpses of what awaits us when our lives on earth are over. Descriptions vary, yet a thread of similarity runs through them all. May this collection serve as a travel guide as we embark on the greatest adventure of all-the journey into the mysterious realms beyond this world.

Earths In Our Solar System (Which Are Called Planets, and Earths In The Starry Heaven Their Inhabitants, And The Spirits And Angels There)is a classic old spiritual text on the subject of cosmology by Emanuel Swedenborg with the following oassage: "Inasmuch as, by the Divine mercy of the Lord, the interiors which are of my spirit have been opened in me, and it has thereby been given me to speak with spirits and angels, not only with those who are near our Earth, but also with those who are near other earths; and since I had an ardent desire to know whether there were other earths, and to know their character and the character of their inhabitants; it has been granted me by the Lord to speak and have intercourse with spirits and angels who are from other earths, with some for a day, with some for a week, with some for months; and to be instructed by them respecting the earths from and near which they were, and concerning the life, customs, and worship of their inhabitants, besides various other things there that are worthy of note. And since it has been given me to become acquainted with these matters in this way, it is permitted me to describe them from the things which I have heard and seen."

Scientific research is communicated, organized, financed, governed, and evaluated through the process of publication. The result of this process is a highly competitive academic environment that rewards researchers for high volume publication, preferably in high-impact journals, leading to the popularised expression 'publish or perish'. Universities and other scientific institutions are under similar pressure, with their aggregated research output being under constant scrutiny. This innovative text provides a detailed introduction to the origin and development of the scholarly metrics used to measure academic productivity, and the effect they have upon the quality and diversity of scientific research. With its careful attention to both the positive and negative outcomes of research evaluation and their distinct expressions around the globe, The Evaluation Game guides the way to a more grounded understanding of metrics, and the diverse academic cultures they give rise to.
