""Within is a cluster of fragments, feelings and freeflows that have unraveled to reveal certain insights as part of my journey thus far. I hope that at the same time as offering a small insight into my inner universe and life journey this book can also be used creatively to offer prompts to spur movement, painting, art or to connect in new ways with nature. My hope is that this book is a aperitif for poetry that will follow in the future.""

Redefining the Agenda for Social Justice

Redefining the Agenda for Social Justice

Francine Mestrum; Meena Menon

Springer Verlag, Singapore

The book relates three years of history of social movements from Asia and Europe who work on social justice, as a rough overview. The work for the book is mainly done on the ground, day after day, working in villages and cities, with people and their organisations, organising resistance and preparing alternatives. It is based on the fact that European and Asian concerns are identical, in spite of divergent levels of development and wealth, and that the existing international initiatives, such as the ILO’s social protection floors, or the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals are perfectly compatible with neoliberal policies. The book goes beyond and sees social commons as a strategic tool for transforming societies. It is basically a project for the sustainability of life, of humans, of societies, and of nature. The book describes the ideas at the basis of the work in different sectors. It is not about the practice of social policies but about the ideas and discourses that can inthe end shape the political practices. In sum, this book, presents a new social paradigm. It concretely shows how social justice and environmental justice do go hand in hand.
China’s Free Trade Agreement Strategies

China’s Free Trade Agreement Strategies

This book delves into the intriguing paradox of China's position in international trade law. Although China is an active member of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) engaging in substantial trade, tensions with trading partners may also arise. In this context, the book explores the legal principles informing Chinese Free Trade Agreements (FTA) and aims to answer the pivotal question: What drives China's FTA strategies? With unique analytical methods and a novel theoretical framework, this book sheds light on China's FTA strategies, challenging prevailing notions about State intervention in the economy and offering a nuanced perspective on China’s position in the world trading system. By exploring how Chinese FTAs align with developmental State and socialist market economy principles, the book contributes significantly to the fields of international economic law generally, and Chinese law specifically. Readers, especially those interested in international trade law and China's economic policies, will benefit from gaining a deeper understanding of the principles guiding China's FTA strategies and their contrast with leading liberal regimes like the WTO, the United States, and the European Union. This thought-provoking and pioneering book presents a fresh perspective on China's role in the global trade landscape. It is thus an essential resource for anyone curious about the interaction between China’s distinctive political economy and the transforming international economic order.

A Hidden Jewish Child from Belgium

A Hidden Jewish Child from Belgium

Francine Lazarus survived WWII in Belgium hidden with strangers, isolated from her family, and moved from place to place. She witnessed murder and was often injured herself. With her father murdered in Auschwitz, her story continues post-war with the young Francine, neglected and abused by her family, being sent into foster care, and only commencing schooling aged eight. At 13 she was sent to work and forced to abandon education. Like most child Survivors, she was told to forget about her war experiences. After involuntary migration to Australia her life began to improve. She created a loving family and, in middle age, earned bachelor's and master's degrees. However, this testimony is much more than a chronicle of Francine's life. Plagued by secrecy, guilt, and shame, she explains how silence affected her life, and the events that prompted her to share her story. The book is particularly valuable because Francine relates her memories, emotions and introspection to the existing literature on Hidden Children. The research on her life, family and their history (including books, papers, archives, and museum documents) is interspersed throughout the book, offering a detailed portrayal of her situation, and this description by a Survivor of her reconstruction and self-healing process is rare in existing literature. Furthermore, her immigration, part of the recovery process, is a fascinating and under-researched topic, which allows for a unique insight into post-war expatriation. The issue of reconstruction is what makes this book a considerable addition to current literature. It fills the gap between the intimacy of individual memoirs and the past ten years' academic research conducted on elderly hidden Jewish children by historians, psychologists, and other professionals.
Play Dead

Lyrically raw and dangerously unapologetic, play dead challenges us to look at our cultivated selves as products of circumstance and attempts to piece together patterns amidst dissociative chaos. harris unearths a ruptured world dictated by violence-a place of deadly what ifs, where survival hangs by a thread. Getting by is carrying bruises and walking around with "half a skull." "francine j. harris's poems are tenderized: they not only insist upon their embodiment, they punch, howl, beat, and bleed their way into being." -Boston Review "...The poems in play dead] provide scrappy, cunning, and inventive methods of survival." -Drunken Boat
Earning Dignity: Labour Conditions and Relations During the Century of the Black Death in Marseille
Earning Dignity: Labour Conditions and Relations during the Century of the Black Death sheds a direct light on the changing labour market and working relations of medieval Marseille before and after the Black Death. The author's close analysis of hundreds of notarized contracts and legal suits provides an unparalleled comprehensive study of the prime actors in work relations - masters and employees; men, women, and children- integral to the Massilian port economy through its most turbulent period of pestilence, warfare, and tense labour relations after 1348. By establishing the longer trends of pre-plague conditions, the author reveals the predicaments masters found themselves in the new labour shortages after the Black Death, the intensified used of money in work relations, and the broader place of unskilled workers (not least among them, women) in urban, household, agricultural, and maritime trades. The study ends as the calamitous century drew to a close, when changing relations, long-term debt, and demanded dignity of labourers undoubtedly created the basis for longer term trends in work relations in the century to follow.
