This is an original collection of pencil drawing and watercolors by artist Frank Hoctor. As a young artist in New York City in the 1920's he practiced his art by sketching people and places he observed, from the streets of New York to Central Park, Grand Central Station to the theater district. The book includes a brief glimpse of the life of the artist. The drawings were collected and edited by his daughter, artist and art historian Harriet Hoctor Groeschel.

Frank O'Connor was a most painstaking writer, sometimes taking up to ten years to revise and polish a story. This book attempts to examine the process and tries to reveal something about O'Connor's perception of his craft and the environment from which his art emerged.

This book argues for the reconsideration of Frank Knight and the Chicago School of Economic thought in a post-Financial Crisis world. The author posits that the discussion of the founder of "Knightian Uncertainty" can reveal new insights into what the economy can do for society, as his prophetic insights can offer a view into the soul of the modern economy. The book first considers Frank Knight's early history and the unfolding of his economic philosophy before going on to evaluate his enduring legacy. All those interested in the influence of political and religious philosophy on economics will be delighted to discover the lasting impact of this great economic thinker.

This is the first book to closely examine the curatorial work that the celebrated poet Frank O’Hara (1926-1966) undertook for the Museum of Modern Art in New York and abroad.Upon his premature death, the New York Times obituary ran with the headline: ‘Frank O’Hara, 40, Museum Curator / Exhibitions Aide at Modern Art Dies – Also a Poet’. However, in the half a century since, O’Hara’s fascinating career as a curator, where he oversaw exhibitions of the likes of Jackson Pollock, Helen Frankenthaler, David Smith, and Larry Rivers, among others, has been eclipsed by the critical attention given over to his poetry. Drawing on a broad range of unpublished archival material, the book reveals the impact O’Hara’s curatorial work had both on the reception of American modern art abroad and on the curatorial profession itself. It focuses on his travelling exhibitions for MoMA’s International Program, a vehicle for soft power during the fraught years of the cultural Cold War, exposing him to new art, artists, and cities, while developing important transnational networks far from New York, from Madrid to Venice, Zagreb to Otterlo.Bringing together close readings of O’Hara’s poems and unpublished letters with a selection of archival illustrations, Holman argues for O’Hara’s sense of exuberant continuity between life as a writer and a curator, an American and a cosmopolitan – revealing that he was so much more besides the quintessential New York poet. It is perfect reading for anyone interested in American art in the mid-20th century, curatorial and museum studies, or simply this lesser known but fascinating aspect of the legendary poet’s career.

People cross our paths for a reason. That, no doubt, reads like a horrible cliché but I never claimed to be a good writer, only an honest one. I believe the reason I met you was to become comfortable in my own skin.Ever seen a couple of old boys on a park bench and wondered what they are chatting about? In his new play Ben Weatherill lets us overhear Frank and Percy as they discuss the weather, then their dogs and then each other and so much more. Will the widowed schoolteacher and the elder statesman dare to risk changing their lives or let sleeping dogs lie?Frank and Percy is a poignant and witty take on the unexpected relationship that blossoms between two men. Old friends, three-time Olivier Award winner Roger Allam, and one of our greatest stage and screen actors, Ian McKellen, re-unite for this witty, moving two-hander. This edition was published to coincide with the world premiere at Theatre Royal Windsor, in June 2023.

On a broad green leaf sit ten rather gorgeous (though they do say so themselves) caterpillars. And all they can talk about is what beautiful butterflies they are going to be! But not Frank. Frank is a very plain caterpillar, but he's fine with that. There's so much beauty to see all around him, and so many interesting insects to say good morning to. When the butterflies hatch, they are not happy. Not one of them looks quite as fabulous as they thought they would. Except for Frank . . . A funny and inspiring picture book from Alex Latimer, author of the award-winning Godfrey is a Frog, which explores the beauty of being content with what you have.

Countless thousands of men and women around the world have good reason to be thankful that Frank Pantridge survived three and a half years of brutal Japanese captivity. Had he not, they too would in all probability have died too. Taken prisoner at the fall of Singapore in February 1942 Frank was forced to endure appalling deprivation. Conditions on the Burma railway were notorious, and the death rate was horrendous. On returning to Belfast in late 1945 Frank specialised in heart diseases. Convinced that the prompt application of electric shock after cardiac arrest could save lives he reasoned that ventricular defibrillation should be applied not just in hospitals but in the workplace, the home, the street or ambulance. His first portable' defibrillator was produced in 1965 and over the intervening years evolved into the compact units so prevalent today. The importance of Pantridge's invention was well demonstrated when US President Lyndon B Johnston's life was saved in 1972. This stirring biography reveals the full story of a remarkable man who survived against the odds to save countless lives.
