Guy Fawkes first appeared as a serial in Bentley's Miscellany, between January and November 1840. It was subsequently published as a three-volume set in July 1841, with illustrations by George Cruikshank. The first of William Harrison Ainsworth's seven "Lancashire novels", the story is based on the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, an unsuccessful attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Ainsworth relied heavily on historical documents describing the trial and execution of the conspirators, of whom Fawkes was one, but he also embellished the known facts. He invented the character of Viviana Radcliffe, daughter of the prominent Radcliffe family of Ordsall Hall - who becomes Fawkes's wife - and introduced supernatural elements into the story, such as the ability of the alchemist, John Dee, to raise the spirits of the dead.

Guy De Tournet, Child of Revolution, Son of France
Russia....with its wild untamed lands of vast open Steppes, of marshlands, of rivers, of unfathomable people, some as wild as their country, yet with a culture of religion, of art, of buildings of great beauty. Into this forbidding landscape came the French with all their arrogant innocence, proclaiming a victory they had yet to win.Amongst them Guy De Tournet, Captain of cavalry, who kept silent vigil over his own thoughts. It would take more than defiant words to win this war. It would take men, blood and guts. His and that of other valiant Frenchmen; the cannon fodder. The year was 1812, the antagonists Bonaparte, who fashioned himself like a Roman Emperor, and Alexander I, the suspicious autocratic Tsar of all Russia.

The Tractatus de tonis of Guy of Saint-Denis (written ca. 1300-10) differs from other treatises on plainchant in the depth of its analysis of the various tones into which chant was traditionally classified. The treatise of Guy of Saint-Denis is preserved as the concluding item in an anthology of texts about plainchant that Guy compiled (now London, British Library, MS Harley 281), beginning with some writings of Guido of Arezzo and a Cistercian tonary, but also including the Ars musice of Johannes de Grocheio and the Tractatus de tonis of Petrus de Cruce. Guy's treatise presents itself as a synthetic overview of both the theory and practice of plainchant in a way that combines the very practical reflection of Guido of Arezzo with ideas of more Aristoteleian inspired theorists such as Johannes de Grocheio and Peter of Auvergne.
