The publications of the Hakluyt Society (founded in 1846) made available edited (and sometimes translated) early accounts of exploration. The first series, which ran from 1847 to 1899, consists of 100 books containing published or previously unpublished works by authors from Christopher Columbus to Sir Francis Drake, and covering voyages to the New World, to China and Japan, to Russia and to Africa and India. This volume, published in 1852, was edited by John Barrow, son of the distinguished promoter of Arctic exploration Sir John Barrow. It contains two accounts of exploration around Hudson's Bay - the narrative of Captain William Coats who made several voyages in the region in the 1720s and 30s, and the ship's log and other documents of Captain Middleton of H.M.S. Furnace who in 1741–2 attempted to discover the much sought-after North-West Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

Thomas M'Keevor served as the physician for the second group of Selkirk settlers that set out in 1812 for the Red River Colony in Canada. This short account of what he witnessed, particularly the crossing of Hudson Bay, appeared in 1819. Greatly interested in icebergs, M'Keevor discusses these 'sea mountains' in detail. He also describes the Inuit peoples encountered, giving a short glossary of Inuit words. Presenting a vivid account of the scene, he was clearly moved by seeing a polar bear protecting her cubs from a hunting party sent out from the ship. Also published in this volume is a brief account in English of the 1806 voyage of the Sirène by the French naval officer Fréminville. Initially tasked with attacking British whalers off Spitsbergen, the frigate came close to the coast of Greenland, yet most of the time on land was spent in Iceland, where observations were made of the Icelandic people, fauna and geology.
A Voyage to Hudson's-Bay by the Dobbs Galleyand Californiain the Years 1746 and 1747, for Discovering a North West Passage
After running away to sea in 1741, Henry Ellis (1721–1806) joined a privately funded expedition with the purpose of discovering the North-West Passage, a possible trade route to the East Indies. While the expedition returned to England unsuccessful in 1747, having been thwarted by hazardous ice, Ellis believed that the route was still likely to exist. The party had travelled further north than any previous expedition, and Ellis's account, first published in 1748, generated great interest. The book includes a brief history of other attempts to find the passage, a map of Hudson Bay, several engravings of the fauna encountered, and observations of the natural history of the area. With his reputation increased by the book's publication, Ellis became a fellow of the Royal Society in 1749. He was later involved in the slave trade in Africa and colonial governance in North America.
